Post Google to track users with wi-fi
Google aims to be able to track its users to within 100-200 feet of their location through new wireless networks in order to serve them with relevant advertising from local businesses.

The leading internet search company, which depends on advertising for 99 per cent of its revenues, was selected on Wednesday by San Francisco as its preferred bidder to provide a basic free wi-fi internet service covering the entire city.

Sounds creepy to me.

Won't work. Most people don't orient themselves according to what's going on down the black anymore anyways. Especially frequent internet users and/or shoppers.

People have a "meh, it's happening already, nothing bad is going on, who cares really? And if we do, what can we actually do about it anyway?" ethic towards this kind of stuff.

Because we have surrendered ourselves to governmental control, so surrendering control further to major corporations is an easy pill to swallow.

All google is doing is using it as one more way to narrow down search results to make them even more relevant.

I like it.

If you pay for cable/DSL/modem Internet right now, your company knows where you are located too. How is this any different except that it's free and wireless?

Is that before or after google is saving babies from certain death?

Google is a company. People give it way too much credit. Trust building has stopped and profit margins are now important to google, don't dare be fooled into thinking otherwise. Google is not some innocent behemoth here to save us all from Microsofts nasty grasps.

Meh, my dad's developing something much worse, imo.

Some sort of built-in car thing that uplinks you to a gov. tracking system. your car will be recorded at all times. according to dad, its being developed so you can get information about gas/food stops at the next exit, etc.

I think it sounds disgustingly intrusive....
