Who cares if one store isn't selling the DVD? Why even buy it? Just rent and copy it. You'll save 15 bucks in the process as Universal DVDs aren't very well copy protected. I haven't bought a DVD in three months.

My Wal-Mart sells the Sex & The City DVD's. They have all along, at least since the third season came out which is when I actually purchased a Sex & The City DVD from Wal-Mart.

It's a way of making them stand out and crediting them, sort of like citing sources in an academic paper or underline or italicizing book titles.

That's not true. Edited versions of *some* CD's

You sure about that? When I used to buy CDs at Wal-Mart, every single one was edited.

BTW, I'm soooooo glad someone's watching this thread right now.

Absolutely positive. I don't normally shop at Wal-Mart, but I went there right before Christmas. I looked at some Radiohead and other CD's and I was surprised to find out that they had profanity stickers on them. I asked some people that were with me about it, and they said that not all CD"s are only available in edited version.

I don't know...I don't want to be preachy and I certainly say to each their own, but it does bother me when movie fans copy DVDs and download films. It doesn't bother me with music, I guess because I am not that much interested in music myself. Not to say that I have never downloaded anything, but only stuff that I simply can't get any other way (like current Lost episodes or some rare foreign flicks). I don't even think the "crime" aspect is what bothers me that much, it is more about being able to have the original, fancy packaging in my shelf.

But to each their own.

oh yea .. and get over it.

I never said this was a sure thing, which is why I had a question mark in the subject. Though his must not be, at least they aren't planning on it but eventually probably will cave in. I'm not sure if all Wal-Mart stores will be like this or if it will just be some.

As for other stores like Target: I don't live in a big town and we only have Wal-Mart. That's the ONLY place in town to buy new DVD's. I'd have to go an hour for the nearest town that had another place I could buy it. If I didn't have to buy at Wal-Mart I sure as hell wouldn't because they are said to be a homophobic company. It doesn't feel right doing business with them, but I don't have much of a choice.

amazon.com

these days, shipping is usually free too.

I would have already pre-ordered Brokeback Mountain at Amazon if the shipping were free, but I don't think it is. I think you have to spend $25 in order to get free shipping.

You have to realize that Wal-Mart's headquarts are in Bentonville, Arkansas, which is where I used to live and it's pretty conservative. It'd probably be smarter to do a region type selling plan; don't sell it to markets they would be offended, then provide BM to markets that want it.

Brokeback Mountain (Widescreen Edition) - Heath Ledger
$16.98 - Quantity: 1 - Not yet released - Eligible for Amazon Prime shipping rates: join now
Condition: new
Sold by: Amazon.com

Items: $16.98
Shipping & Handling: $2.98

Total Before Tax: $19.96
Estimated Tax: $1.75
Order Total: $21.71

Most places sell DVDs for $15-$19 before sales tax. If the extra $2-$3 is worth selling your soul to Wal-Mart, then shop there. Typically, Amazon undercuts their DVDs enough that shipping balances the price out with Best Buy and the like.

There is a choice (and Amazon.com isn't the only store on the web).

Hehe. I'm not selling them or anything for profit. It's not like Universal doesn't already make billions of dollars each year.

Well if I were going to pay that much I may as well just get it from Deep Discount DVD, where shipping is free and it costs less than $20. With tax and shipping Amazon's price will be more than most stores charge for it their first week. And I don't think of it as selling my soul to Wal-Mart if they have it, I think of it as buying the movie as a way to say "fuck you" to the anti-Brokeback people .

As for downloading movies/music; I really don't have a problem with people doing it. But my computer would take forever to download a movie so I don't do it, and besides, I'd hate watching a movie on the computer and don't have a DVD burner. Plus, if I love a movie or even really like it I'd rather just have the actual thing on my shelf instead of a copy of it. But if others want to do this I don't care. If I had the set-up though like Joe I would record some DVD's, like the more rare movies and some foreign films, and porn ;).

Who cares? I's not like anyone here actually shops at Wal-Mart on a consistent basis, right?

I hope?

Okay so... Wal-Mart is "theoretically" anti-Brokeback Mtn, at least in principal. So your way of sticking it to the man is to purchase said liberal DVD at said conservative leaning store, thereby giving conservative store more of a kick back.

Well it's not like I have much of a choice. I hate to support them but they're the only store around here I can get it from. When I actually move and have options I won't.

WAL-MART HIT BY BROKEBACK PROTEST
Tuesday, April 4 2006

Wal-Mart has turned aside a massive letter-writing campaign by the American Family Association. urging the retailer to refuse to stock Brokeback Mountain, being distributed by Universal Home Entertainment. The group, which has successfully campaigned against what it considers to be broadcast indecency launched the campaign last week after ads for the film began being displayed prominently in the retailer's 3,900 stores. In an interview with today's (Tuesday) Los Angeles Times, the AFA's Randy Sharp, accused Wal-Mart of helping to push the "gay agenda" by "trying to help normalize homosexuality in society." He added, "But how many copies are they going to have to sell to [recoup] the losses of customers who they've offended and will no longer shop at Wal-Mart?" But a Wal-Mart spokeswoman replied, ""The fact that we are offering the movie is not an endorsement of the content of the movie or any specific belief. ...We simply offer the latest titles that consumers want."

I bought it today from Wal-Mart for $14.44 ;).

yay.. they caved into the money.

the american family association and groups like it really really annoy me!!! talk about jumping on the band wagon! it would annoy me more if i actually lived there i suppose, but just hearing about them really bugs me.

can i ask? do you guys (americans) have a law like we used to have (section 28) that prohibits the teaching of issues related to homosexuallity etc in schools and such for fear it is 'promoting it' (god fobid!-;))

wal mart own 'asda' over here... and they wouldn't not sell it- they would lose soooo much money!

Some people just cry wolf every time something doesn't go their way or they think a certain store is being homophobic. Like Christian said there's always Target. People get their underwear in a bunch over something so ridiculous.

I don't shop at Wal-Mart at all. Maybe because the nearest one is like a half hour away but I don't remember ever buying anything from it.

I'm not extremely active or resonant on these sort of issues (though I usually comment on them) but I must say that had they not caved in for the cash and not supplied it, I don't understand how some people would just say "there is always target."
I'm sorry but... I'm not even "out" yet and I would protest that because it goes far beyond the gay issue... it's just completely disgusting.

Anyway... I bought mine from Best Buy where with your purchase they gave you a FREE book. Yes, an actual book and not some magazine-y thing. the book included the original short story, the entire script, pictures from the movie, and three accounts of writing the story (by the author and 2 adaptors).

I don't shop at Wal-Mart. I shop at K-Mart (or Zellers - does anyone else remember the Zeller's Teddy? I still have mine from when I was a kid, hehe.)

PEACE, Mike.

I would never copy a DVD or burn a DVD of a movie from the internet. The DVD packaging and disc are life to me. The blank, lifeless copied DVDs are death to me. Death, I say. There's nothing as enjoyable as ripping open a DVD, and getting that new DVD smell.

DVD!!!

As for downloading, if I happen to see a movie I like, I buy it. I'm not a complete scumbag.

... or am I?

No, not at all.

...

Or am I?
