I vote bi-weekly. Most of the people around here watch a LOT of movies, so I don't think one in a 2-week span is that unreasonable, but I'm not sure that everyone will agree with me.

Myself, I'd vote bi-weekly as well. I mean we got a month for a book and a book takes up considerably more time in general than a movie.

I'll probably be able to participate for next month and summer since that's when I have vacation, but I'll try my best.

Well, I would say bi-weekly is where the majority is leaning towards. I think two weeks is enough to find and see the movie anyway, so this is how we'll do it.

When are we going to start?

Next step would be deciding how the movies are picked for each two weeks.

So here's my idea:


I'd suggest that 3-4 people suggest their picks and give the reasoning for why this was their suggestion (like how unseen it is, what importance it bears, why it sounds interesting....just basically why you selected it)

Then a poll is created and people vote on the films. Next week, we have a different 3-4 people making their picks. Each week just 3-4 people can volunteer to make the picks. It should be made sure that every gets a chance to make a pick at some point. We are 16 participants as of now, meaning that within 8-10 weeks, everyone of us will get a chance to suggest their pick.

Now as for the criteria for the pick, it is pretty simple:

- It must have been nominated for Best Picture

- It should not be something that most have seen. I know this one is vague, but it assures that people don't pick Titanic, Forrest Gump, Schindler's List etc. You know what I mean. Any other ideas and suggestions are welcome, of course. You may suggest any other way of how we should make the picks.

Once the picks are made, everyone has got two weeks to get the film, watch it and write something about it in its specific club thread where we'll discuss it.

I suggest Judgement at Nuremberg which lost to West Side Story in 1961/1962. Another Kramer picture, The Defiant Ones looks good too from 1958 (lost to Gigi).

No justification, I'd like to pick something I've never seen either.

Kramer is one of the Oscar biggies though. High Noon (1952), The Caine Mutiny (1954), The Defiant Ones (1958), Judgement at Nuremberg (1961), Ship of Fools (1962), Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967)... all nominated for Best Picture. He was nominated 9 times total and never won.

Your suggestion sounds great. I can't think of a better way, but here are several alternatives:

Or we can have a poll that goes by year first, i.e. pick one from 1985 for the next viewing, then one from 1986 the second time, and so on. And once we get to say 1995 and later, where most people have seen most films, we can group multiple years together.

Or another way is to pick from the winners first, since for me, I'd pick them to watch first if I haven't seen any nominees of a particular year, so for the initial viewing, we pick from the five winners between 1985-1989. And whichever one got picked will be replaced by the 1990 winner in the next poll, and we could also drop a film that got 0 or 1 votes and replace with the next one on the list, then go from there.

Or we could go by IMDb ratings.

Overall, I like to go with earlier films first if everything else is roughly equal.

Now I'd love to see Judgement at Nuremberg and others, but my problem is in general with this "older" old films that we don't have something like Netflix over here and I ave to rely on what the three video stores around me carry and I am not sure if they have those.

Well, both of your first suggestions (I find IMDB generally arguable, hehe) sound great to me as well, as for grouping films by years or the winners (which sounds very good to me).

So we have three main good suggestions IMO by now, I'd like to hear opinions on them.

Oscar nominations or no, the problem with Stanley Kramer is...as a director, he's kind of a hack. Really. A good liberal filmmaker, his movies were almost all speechifying and moralizing, with little left to the imagination. HIs films were far, far too obvious, if well-intentioned. The 1960s Paul Haggis.

Only two of his films, I think, overcome this. One is Inherit The Wind, but that has no BP nomination. The Defiant Ones is also a good movie.

Judgement at Nuremburg...except for the Marlene Dietrich sequences, I am not a fan. Same for Guess Who's Coming To Dinner.

The grouping by years idea....is worth considering, although it limits the possibilities.

I've wanted to see Warren Beatty's Reds for years, but it's not on DVD and damn near impossible to find.

I don't know about having so much rules and restrictions to it though, I'd rather we choose from the whole selection. Doing it year-by-year, 1985 first, etc., would cut down the availability and fun of choosing them IMO.
