last time i checked, the majority of the service industry, even those not paid so well, do not rely on tips. : )

Why yes? Because the waitress job is extremely difficult that its worth the extra 20% total of your food. Now answer me, where are the tips for your tech support person or the plumber that fixes your bathroom

Besides what the employers are doing is breaking the laws by paying the waiters/waitresses below min wage

Actually, from what I head they DO rely on tips mostly.

Thats why I make my own food and nver order out because of the phobia of eating out. I heard horror stories from classmates of mine on what they do to the food becuse of boredom

Like I said its not my fault the employers are paying their waiters crap and the employers are breaking the law by paying below minimum wage.

In California its 20% unless you order food from an asian restaurant so then its 5-10% since most asians are cheap even though they make the most money in CA, well not all asians are cheap but mainly the FFTB ones

I agree with the entire argument of incentives but I'm only arguing the point that the service industry does not primarily rely on tips. Incentives are offered in many ways and in most places (such as banks and customer service), are offered by the company itself.

It's BS that employers are breaking the laws by doing it. Check the law; a restaurant-owner can pay below 5.15/hr (the minimum for them is 2 something) as long as the waiter gets at least $5.15/hr after counting tips.

Hey Im chinese so it doesnt make it racist :tongue: . Yes most of my relatives are cheap when I treated my mom and dad out to eat, they said I was tipping the waiter too much. They said 10% should be enough because most chinese and japanese restaurants are like that
Now if I said restaurants should require Pakistanian waiters to use deoderant that would be racist :lol: since they arent of my race

We can play with extreme examples.

How do you tip a bus boy? You can't. But you do. because in many restaurants, tips are shared at the end of the day with the bus boys.

there are too man yfront end people you 'could' potentially tip but you don't because society hasn't adjusted to that as yet. Do you tip a bank teller? How about when you walk into burger king? Those people need the most incentives. Or how about the tech service agent who comes to your house or the one you see at the place of purchase? Do you tip the guy who helped you in deciding what you wanted to buy at the local shoe store?

Obviously there are some technical questions with all these. But bottom line is that the reason waiters are tipped more often than other service people is because it's easiest to provide a direct incentive with them.
