 The Aristocrats
The Aristocrats Quote: The Aristocrats is a 2005 documentary film about the famous dirty joke of the same name. It was conceived and produced by comedians Penn Jillette and Paul Provenza, edited by Emery Emery, and released to theaters by THINKFilm. The film is dedicated to Johnny Carson, as "The Aristocrats" was said to be his favorite joke.

This movie is HILARIOUS. It's a documentary revolving around a multitude of comedians (some famous and some not) and their telling of the dirtiest joke of all time: "the aristocrats". The jokes all start and end the same, but what goes on in the middle is the most filthy, vulgar, and obscene humor you can ever imagine. I came out of the movie having heard jokes about anal sex, oral sex, incest, necrophelia, bestiality, baby rape, Hitler, Jesus, racial stereotypes and 9/11. And to my suprise, all of it was in good humor and made me laugh. Overall, the movie was extremely entertaining and enjoyable not to mention, well, funny.

The Aristocrats has a very strong first third (With the explanation, origin and various comedians performing the joke), and a very strong last third (South Park Kids/Friars Roast). The middle portion of the movie however becomes tedious and boring and slows the movie down almost to a complete hault. It's basically the same as the first half, except there are a couple of unknowns who perform the joke pretty awfully. Plus, once you hear the same type of humor over and over again for 45 minutes straight, it becomes a little boring. As I said though, it picks up once again at the end, with Gilbert Gottfreid's interpretation at Hugh Hefner's Friar's Club Roast, just after 9/11, and the interpretation of the joke from the South Park kids.
There is one thing though I wish they could've continued with. Kevin Pollack was giving his version of the joke, but while doing so, he was immitating Christopher Walken (His best impression). They show him telling the joke for about three minutes and then just cut him off. It would've been great if they had let him get more graphic as Walken.

Awesome!
This is a behind-the-curtains look at humor, that is itself, hilarious.
As quoted in the movie: "It's not the song, it's the singer" - it reminds me of one of my favourite jokes:
Quote: A new prisoner arrives by boat at an old isolated rocky island prison where the rest of the convicts had been breaking rocks together for 20 years. As he swung his pick-axe one day, he hears one of the old-timers say, "seventy-eight". All the other convicts begin rolling around on the ground, laughing uproariously. The next day, someone shouts out, "two hundred eighty-nine". Same fantastic reaction from everyone. This happens several times during his first few weeks. Finally, he asked someone what was with the numbers. They told him that since everyone had been imprisoned together so long, they all knew all of each other's jokes - so they had devised a numbering system to save time. The new guy loved the idea and asked if he could try telling one, and they agreed. So he shouts out, "one hundred thirty-two". But there's only a bit of grumbling and mostly dead silence among the other convicts. He asked, "What went wrong?", and the other guy says, ----- "You didn't tell it right".
For anyone who has ever thought about telling a joke before telling it - this movie is a must-see...
5 out of 5.

Laughed for a little while, but it became tedious half way through.

I don't quite understand all of the talk about this film. Sure, it had its moments, but really it was just an overlong telling of the same joke over and over and over again. The comedians were funny, but after the 10th time, its not only foul and vulgar, but rather boring. It isn't helped by the fact that the production is really second-rate and more or less just random clips thrown together without much coherance. Perhaps in the hands of a better director the film would have worked. As it stands, it just doesn't. C+

I like the idea of there beinga comedian in-joke, that they tell through the years, but I just wish it was a funny joke.

I disagree - I think it would have diverted attention from the main point of the movie if they had chosen a funny joke.

I wasn't so much dissapointed with it not being funny as that was half of the joke. You have this horrendous buildup and then the punchline is really nothing at all. That wasn't my issue though.
To me, one it was a poorly made documentary, it just didn't feel like it had a lot of effort put in to it.

This movie changed my life.
Well, I wouldn't go that far, but I will NEVER look at improvisation comedy in the same light.

I was really disappointed. Should have been edited down to about 20 minutes. The concept was good, and some of the strange variations were good (Bill Mahr: "What do you call your act?" "The Osbournes!") but really, just saying gross things isn't really that funny -- any 13 year old can do that.
