V for Vendetta

Quote:
V for Vendetta is a 2006 dystopian thriller film directed by James McTeigue and produced by Joel Silver and the Wachowski brothers, who also wrote the screenplay. It is an adaptation of the V for Vendetta comic book by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. Set in London in a near-future dystopian society, Natalie Portman stars as Evey, a working-class girl who must determine if her hero has become the very menace she is fighting against. Hugo Weaving plays V—a bold, charismatic freedom fighter driven to exact revenge on those who disfigured him. Stephen Rea portrays the detective leading a desperate quest to capture V before he ignites a revolution.

The film was originally scheduled for release by Warner Bros. on Friday, November 4, 2005 (a day before the 400th Guy Fawkes Night), but was delayed; it opened on March 17, 2006. Reviews were mixed, but the worldwide box office earnings were over $132 million. Alan Moore, having been disappointed with the film adaptations of two of his other graphic novels, From Hell and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, refused to view the film and subsequently distanced himself from it.

The film had been seen by many political groups as an allegory of oppression by government; libertarians and anarchists have used it to promote their beliefs. Activists belonging to the group Anonymous use the same Guy Fawkes mask popularized by the film when they appear in public at numerous high-profile events, emulating one of its key scenes.

Perhaps one of the toughest films of late to grade.

It was very provacative and well made, but the plot was far to complicated and confusing to be as entertaining as it could have been. Stylistically it was great, and the Wachowski brothers trademarkes certainly shine through quite well. It just isn't as good overall as I had hoped, mainly due to it being extremely difficult to follow during certain times. Even though it runs just over two hours, it feels much longer.

Having said all that, the message it presents is very timely. Unlike The Matrix and its philosophical ideoligies, this message is entriely political. It is also entirely relevant.

A well made film, but lacking quite substantially.

Full review coming later tonight. My grade is leaning towards a B

Curious to see how difficult this movie is too understand and how much it is lacking.

I'm seeing the film tomorrow, so it'll be interesting to see if I agree with Jeff.

Im not sure if this is a well know fact or not but I will pass this a long. Instead of midnight showings on Thursday night, Warner Bros said many theaters(including the one I work at) can play the movie at 10. So, check your theater for either a midnight show or a 10 PM show on thursday.

A-

See it. It's an important movie. The pace is off at the beginning, and V's entrance gave me horrible flashbacks to The Architect (though the scene's redeemed by one line from Evey: "Are you, like, a crazy person?"). By the end, though, the plot is very compelling and Hugo Weaving's fantastic.

My roommate who saw it with me and I both left thinking the same thing: makes you just want to do something now, does it not?

I agree, very timely film.

What a great great movie this was. I enjoyed every minute. It had a really interesting story, awesome characters, well written dialogue and some nice action sequences. Best movie I've seen in a long long time in theaters. A

Luvd it, quite a bit. I'm afraid it won't hold up on repeat views, but I guess only time will tell...

for now, though, I agree it's a good movie.

Everything about this movie is great. I think repeat viewings will hold up. A few changes were made to the story from the comic book but nothing too drastic in my eyes. A+

Just came back from seeing it, theatre was about 60% full.

I was expecting a matrix-esque type movie, but got something completely different yet just as great :) Natalie Portman was unbelievable and Hugo Weaving was fantastic. The ending was a tad corny, but it was appropriate and the set up made it seem believable. Great movie! The final scenes gave me chills.

A very solid A

70% full in Austin, Texas. Then again, we're the only blue city in this red state.

Bloody brilliant film. How critics can discount such an intellectual masterpiece on technical grounds is beyond my comprehension. To rate it below unsubstantial flings based on a few overbearing monologues.

All entertainment is equal, but some entertainment is more equal than others.

Hmm...

I'm pretty conflicted over this one. On one hand, I feel it's my social responsibility to have liked the film. On the other hand, I feel it's my responsibility as a film fan to acknowledge it's rather apparent (and some in cases debilitating) shortcomings. Essentially, I loved the ideas and message behind the film, but hated the execution. I feel like the film delivered everything it had to say in the first twenty minutes, and the rest of the ridiculously bloated (seriously, thirty minutes could have been trimmed) run time was just drilling it in to your skull in an extremely hamfisted style. I feel like in more capable, competent hands this could have been wonderful. The components for a great film are there. But the Watchowski's script is lifeless and filled with terrible dialogue, and the direction from first timer James McTeigue is pretty awful except for a few nicely composed shots. The pacing is all off. It completely lacked the sense of urgency an incendiary piece like this needs,

This is a meandering, bloated film with shaky execution throughout that has some brilliant ideas bubbling under the surface.

Excellent movie. Filled with fine performances and a timely story. The background score is quite good.

While I agree with you on some points, I didn't feel the script was bad at all. Actually in some spots I thought it was brilliant. Sure V's long prose was a bit off at times, I felt it worked somehow in the end.

And yeah, it definately could have been trimmed by 20-30 minutes without harming the overall story. To me it felt like they just wanted it to be 2+ hrs, and so they added some filler.

There were a couple of subplots that weren't properly explained though, and that did annoy me.

Hmmm... My main issue with the original Matrix was how much it battered you over the head with explanations, well past the point when they weren't really need any more. Looks like I might have similar issues with this one, if what you're saying is true.

Well it is a good movie but it has a bit an to much artist feel on it. Let me explain. It is a bit like "Oh we are the smart artist that have discovered dictatorship, torture etc.....and I feel that it is very very important to show that to people...we didnt even know that such things exist on we feel like it is our duty to share that with people....."
In short even the movie is done well and I did enjoy it...it is missing something. I think people should read the Comic cause it is smarter. The topic is interesting but as said before here the execution could have been much better and smarter.
So I was not dissaponted but I had the feeling that they could have done a really great movie but they didnt.
And as I said, terror suppression etc always have been in human nature. So dont do like it is something new of our decade (after 2000) dear Hollywood...your smarter.

7.5/10

I loved every single piece of music that they chose. It was brilliant. I had to chuckle the first day that Portman gets up and you see V cooking with an apron on and listening to classical music. So many great scenes in this movie.

Argh! I am actually going to go see this despite my disdain for its duo brother producers (had they been directing, I would have skipped it hands down), but Ashton's review, sigh, we tend to agree on alot.

Here's hoping he was in some extreme psychological duress before entering the theatre, and that it affected his ability to enjoy the movie...otherwise, I have a sense he's dead on. :-(
