The worst choice ever, and i mean ever, for a best picture. So completely undeserving. I absolutely loathe this movie with a passion. And when it was read out all i could do was laugh, what more was there to do? To have it along side Brokeback, Munich, Capote and Good Luck is ridiculous, to put it ahead of them and have it not only win but also noiminated above movies such as A History Of Violence, The Constant Gardener, King Kong and Walk The Line shows just how much of a joke movies and the box office had become in 2005.
Congrats though to Reese, George, Phillip, Ang and Rachel as they are all truelly deserving of their wins.

I loved the fact that it won.

It is going to happen! Unless, in "Flag of our fathers", Ryan Philippe and Paul Walker get it on.

Seriously, though, Paul haggis knows what the Academy wants. And now that he does, I can not believe he is not going to give it to them for a third time. Only thing different is, next time I probably won´t be watching it!

What a nice suprise after the oscars were being so predictable,it would have been better if munich won but atleast there was a suprise.

You hear that noise? It's the sound of 6, 000 Academy voters laughing their asses off at Sasha's self-important, self-pitying whinery (par for the course at OW). How dare the Academy not vote the way the camp kidz at Oscarwatch want them to? Oh, the ungratitude of it!

I passed out at the halfway point, missed the last few awards... When I was told by a pal this morning that Crash had won, I thought he was taking the piss. Or rather, I hoped he was.

Well, last night was interesting. I wanted to discuss and all, but not only did my internet disconnect, but my head was in a trash can most of the night as I vomited continuously (being sick sucks..).

But when Nicholson announced Crash, my jaw just dropped. Easily the most shocking thing I've ever seen on the Oscars.

That will neve NEVER happen. The Departed will get the acting awards, Flags of our Fathers and the other Eastwood film will win all the tech, director, and picture awards.

Does anyone think that they showed the clips in the order of votes? (With Munich getting the least, followed by Capote, GN&GL, Brokeback, and finally Crash). I was thinking that, jokingly of course, when Crash's clip was playing, but maybe they did do that...?

I dunno. This was definently the most shoking moment since I started watching the Oscars. It won nothing except the SAG, but that was expected since it's an ensemble piece, it wasn't even nominated for a GG, and it opened in May. Even when people were talking about it this past month, I just could not see it happening. Wow. I am still in shock. And it's kinda sad really. Crash is a decent movie, definently not the best picture of 2005, but a decent one, and now it will be extremely hated by almost everyone. People who hated it to begin with will hate it even more, BM fans will hate it, people like me who thought it was okay will hate it...it will go down as probably the worst Oscar winner.

I have to say I'm thrilled that Crash won, in all honesty. I mean, I loved Brokeback, but it was nice to see such a huge surprise and Crash was my #1 for the year (I'd put it ahead of KK after thinking about it more).

And the reactions I have seen from both camps (pro-Crash and anti-Crash) are some of the most insanely ridiculous things I've seen in a while.

I mean, life goes on. You don't need to go jump out of a nearby window or like tear down a house in celebration or anger because a bunch of people selected this movie.

Funny you should mention that, I kind of said to myself "Crash is going to win Best Picture" when they showed its clip last.

I am soooo happy that Crash, Reese and Hoffman won!!!

You know what, I think the clip thing is exactly what they did. I found a thread about last years show, and the clip order was: Finding Neverland, Ray, Sideways, The Aviator and Million Dollar Baby. Coincidence? It can't be.

I kind've think it is. It could be they just put the 2 biggest frontrunners last in each show, and the 1st 3 jumble up before it. There's no proof that Sideways got more votes than Ray, just like there's no proof that GNAGL got more than Capote and Munich. I'd actually bet on Munich and Capote getting more votes than GNAGL, which completley died in the award season.

I am pretty sure GNGL got more votes than Capote and Sideways got more votes than Ray...

If you think about it, the top 3 each year seem to be the top 3 contenders. Sideways was the critical darling and it won the GG for comedy,so I'm fairly confident that it got more votes than Ray and Finding Neverland. Then between those two, Finding Neverland was the movie that didn't get a director nod, thus probably showing minimal support.

As for this year, the top 2 are for sure. Then comes GN&GL, which I would think received more votes than Capote. Munich barely made it into the category, so it's plausible to think that it received the lowest number of votes.

It makes sense...

I don't think homophobia played any part in Brokeback Mountain's loss, or that Crash's win has anything to do with its loss. I think the dynamics at play behind the Crash win are not the same as those behind BBM's loss.


Perhaps voters felt that Brokeback Mountain was a great-looking film about two men who cheat on their wives? You don't have to be homophobic to dislike the film, and more than you have to dislike it if you like Crash.

Or maybe it did?

The order of the clip sometimes changes.

I had made a thread about it on BOM. SOme years, the third clip is the Best Picture. In others, it's the first clip. Or the fourth. I search for it... but there's really no pattern. Only the accountants know who have won (unless the category is pretaped, like Animated Short or when Arthur Clarke presented Best Adapted Screenplay in 2001 - then the director of the show will know who won beforehand, like a few minutes in advance)

Anyone who refused to see the film needs to have their voting privileges revoked ASAP.

Very few of the voters watch all the films.

Nobody saw Junebug. That's why Amy Adams did not win the Oscar.


And I think many voters flatly refused to watch Munich, and many of the older ones it seems did not give Brokeback Mountain a chance.

It's different, though. People couldn't see Junebug because of how small of a film it was. Brokeback was readily available to any and all. The people who flat out refused to see it let their bigotry get in the way of a fair process. They shouldn't be allowed to vote again.

This is turning into another Florida voting scandal. I think Oscar Voting Reform is now due!


All voting members should be locked in a room and their eyes taped open a la Clockwork Orange and MADE to see all five films they're voting for. LOL.


This kind of half-assed voting would never be allowed on American Idol.
