Munich deserved it.
But I am glad that Crash won, I thought it was better than BBM and it was a surprise!

The thing is, Spielberg is such an acclaimed director and filmmaker as it is, it was great to see a film that was not expected to win anything come away with one of the biggest trophies of the night.
I mean, it had everything against it: small studio with little clout (at the start of the evening at least), early release, its undertones even. Plus it was going up against BBM which going in to the evening was a behemoth.

To me Crash was a decent film, with good performances. But the whole mesage, it felt like racism for dummies.

Crash didn't deserve this. God. The reveal with Jack was definitly the most hilariously shocking and entertaining Oscar moments that I've seen ever, but at the same time it's just so terribly wrong. Christ.

I don't think that Crash was poorly directed or poorly acted. And it's a movie full of well intentions. Plus, it definitely hits you hard emotionally, no one ever debated about whether or not it was a powerful movie. I think the one huge flaw that really stuck out was the dialogue. Don't get me wrong, Haggis nailed a few of the scenes, such as the dialogue between Ludacris and Larenz Tate or Michael Pena's monologue to his daughter, but when people start raising their voices and arguing all of a sudden they start saying the most forced, unrealistic lines I've heard in quite some time. Just because you're pissed off about someone hitting your car doesn't mean that you're going to start yelling about how their Asian or Hispanic. Of course there's still racism in America today, and as the movie points out a lot of it is through first impressions people make without thinking things through. But the way the filmmakers try and present it gets outright goofy at times. Still, for me it was a small flaw in the film and I was able to enjoy it overall for what it was. If you think too heavily on it, I wouldn't blame you for liking it a whole lot less then I did.

Movie had powerful scenes, but far more mediocre ones where yes the situation seemed silly and over the top, unrealistic.

Everyone makes heuristic judgements about people, whether or not you're dealing with racism or stereotypes. I think that's what Crash was trying to tell us. How we sometimes assume the worst in people, which in turn leads to their bad behaviour, which then reaffirms the judgement. I know its ugly (and was a bit overwrought in the movie), but I DON'T think it's innacurate, and the movie certainly doesn't deserve the indgnation that's being thrown at it.

I will debate that. I think it tries to be *weighty* but is so absurd and heavy handed that it can't deliver any emotional impact.

MUNICH deserved nothing, and what do you know, more people agreed with me. Well done to Kong and Geisha as well tonight. Successful night for me.

I'm really surprised that the Academy failed to take this opportunity to acknowledge Brokeback, after all the impressive precursor accolades, massive critical success and very good box-office, it seemed like a no-brainer for them. A movie dealing with this subject matter winning would have been unprecedented and you'd think they would have welcomed that good publicity and it's not like the film isn't of high quality.
But Crash is just as good a movie and this is by no means a travesty, like say... Shakespeare in Love over Private Ryan. We haven't seen a good upset like this in best picture for quite a while and I think it's refreshing after all the Brokeback over-saturation.
However, to answer the thread starter, no, Crash did not deserve to win, MUNICH did.

More people agreed with you?!?!?
About what??? Crash??? I'm pretty certain a MAJORITY of this site would agree with me that Crash did NOT deserve to win.
Munich, otoh, was a FAR more powerful film and deserved FAR more than Crash got

Um, hello BROKEBACK MT. isn't exactly that great of a film. I did not believe for one minute Ennis loved Jack.

Hmm... last I checked I never mentioned Brokeback in any one of my posts in this thread...
Munich deserved best picture, hands down, imo

MUNICH was too episodic to be close to the heart, i get that from CSI. Also the sex scene was probably one of the worst scenes of 2005, not even 50% of DEUCE BIGALOW 2 sank that badly.

Sure the sex scene wasn't good...
But then again... 90% of the scenes in Crash are stupid and have no impact on me

Crash is pretentious
It was emotional at maybe TWO points in the film. The rest of the film was "This is what America is like and it's bad!" I didn't need a mediocre movie to try and send me a message I already knew.
