someone explain to me how a movie that is praised by pretty much the world fails to get the prize from 3,000 or so idiots in LA?

I think the best news of the night, was MUNICH coming out with a bare cabinet.

Funny how big of sore losers some people are that Brokeback didn't win. Get over it, the world isn't ready for a movie that only NAMBLA could love to win Best Picture. I like Matt Dillon and seeing his film win BP is nice to see, although he should have won Supporting Actor as well.

I thought Seymour Hoffman gave the best speech of the night and completely deserved to win as he was fantastic in Capote. I wonder how much of an effect this will have on his asking price?

Also, Paramount should alter their M:I 3 ads and say "Academy Award Winner Philip Seymour Hoffman."

Wow. While I think that Munich was head and shoulders above all other movies nominated this year, I have to say that that Crash win was just awesome. It is neck and neck with Brokeback on my top 10 list (around 6 or 7th), but I think it's so refreshing to see it pull the upset after Brokeback had been locked for months to the point where I and many others became sick of the attention. Also great will be all the backlash and gigantic threads this will spawn all over the internet. Good reads ahead.

As far as the Oscar ceremony goes, well, it was one of the worst ever. Jon Stewart is officially the worst host I have ever seen and I've been watching since 1991. The guy just bombed. Some of those clips that were played, the best actress one for example, were quite funny, but Jon's stuff was horrible.

Acceptance speeches were generally unmemorable, the Penguin guys came off the best I think, and the whole look of the production just looked extremely low-budget.

Memoirs was a worthy winner for its technicals, aside from cinematography where of course The New World should have won, and King Kong was well deserving of the visual effects and sound wins. No Munich wins is a travesty, buy yeah, what can you do?

Best dressed of the night and overall foxiest woman goes to Keira Knightley.................I mean.........damn...



Of course, I can't forget the stunning Zhang Ziyi...

I don't know, I think Chicago is worse than Crash. It's not so much that the movie is bad(which it is), it's that Rob Marshall was so damn unoriginal with it. If you've ever seen the play, you know what I mean. Every single line, gesture, joke is 100% lifted. He didn't even try to put his own touch on it. What a bastard.

I had watched it again Friday night, and it's not just underwhelming....Crash is a downright bad, offensive movie.

I should have taken it as a sign, but I decided it was a meaningless coincidence. What, you ask? Friday night, I was in a car CRASH. I thought it might be an indication, but I kept predicting BBM all the same.

Again, I'll push the fact, IMO the Oprah push and Ebert post made a difference. Crash was pushed immensely by her.

I didn't really hate Crash. It did a good job at capturing some of the emotional and powerful moments, like the scene with the little girl. It's just the concept and idea behind it that makes it so undeserving. When you start thinking about Crash, that's when it starts to suck. That's not a good thing. Not Best Picture worthy. That's the kind of advantage a movie like Flightplan work off of.

In the movie Chicago, all the musical numbers happened in Roxie's head unlike in the play where characters actually burst into song in the same universe. At least Rob Marshall did that change.

I'm with Positive Jon and a few others. I don't hate Crash; it actually got an A- from me, but seeing Brokeback losing is just sick. I haven't felt this bad since Duke lost to UConn in the 1999 national championship game while watching in Cameron Indoor. It's just weird that every time statistical rule didn't apply, it went against Ang Lee and his film: Sense & Sensibility got 7 noms but no director for Ang, a rarity; he won DGA and GG for CTHD but lost in Oscar, even though I wasn't too surprised then; and now this, which pretty much every rule about precursor has been thrown out of the window with the upset.

I only could check the figures since 1978 (so the past 27 years), and Crash has the fewest nods and wins of any best picture winner.

Fucking travesty. Good night.

Well, the Academy certainly followed suit with the weirdness this year. Just look at the winner counts:

The Crash win is devestating, and I'd normally be fuming right now, but the film just doesn't deserve my energy. At least now the film will look even worse to people now that it has won.

What was up with Michelle Williams tonight? She looked horrible.

Rachel Weisz looked radiant, and I'm glad she won. Witherspoon had a really good speech. An incredibly good speech actually. She ended it very well, and it was smooth and she spoke well. I think it was the best speech of the night. The only one that really got me. And I don't even like her that much.

The score category was done extremely well, showcasing all of the scores in one smoothly transitioned piece. Sweet stuff. The song category also done well, and holy crap to winner! Congrats to the Pimp song, and Hustle and Flow and all involved.

The show direction was great, all winners got to come up on stage, it was smooth, Jon Stewart was great, and I was entertained throughout minus the montages. But that's really good, compared to most Oscar shows. The only thing I hate is the Oscar music band. Damn that band. They are terrible, I hate them. They are the rudest I have seen yet on a show. They played off people that didn't even get a chance to say a THING!! Absolutely the rudest ever and extremely disrespectful, and in my opinion they deserve no credit for what they did. What the hell is the big deal if you add 10-20 seconds to certain speeches where another person still needed to talk? Ooh, the show would have been like 5 minutes longer, who the fuck cares.

The actual SHOW part was great; the winners, not so much. But I'm glad now that the Oscars are over, we can officially look on to 2006 now.

Oh, and I feel very much for Ang Lee. Very much so.

Yeah, I just feel bad for Ang. It's like he has to climb one step at the time with each movie even though he usually delivers the good. First he got his film nominated, then he got himself nominated, then he got himself a win, then finally, hopefully, he can get his film a win.

Shack, if you want to watch what a real, 100% replication of a stage show looks like, watch The Producers. I liked it, but it's as though Stroman smuggled in camera in during a live performance.

Chicago, on the other hand, was marvelously cinematic, and Marshall's decision (as Christian pointed out) to have the numbers take place in Roxie's head was a rather brilliant conceit.
