I'm pretty sure having two nominees didn't help Williams since the difference in support for Brokeback and Memoirs' score shouldn't be big to begin with.

Neither is Phoenix (sadly  ), and I think Heath is a bigger contender than Phoenix anyway.

If Geisha had taken score, I'd have more faith, but Geisha clearly had a better shot at Score considering it won almost all precursors. Cinematography, on the other hand, hadn't.
