I'd rather Narnia, Brokeback and Crash win everything than Munich, Good Night, or King Kong.

I am watching the show for the following reasons:

01 Rachel Weisz smiles with her eyes, and is going to win. A small triumph.
02 I like the Penguin movie, and it's going to win
03 I'm semi-interested in the Sound/VFX awards because I think there are some decent nominees except Narnia
04 I wanna see how they perform "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp"

Otherwise, the Oscars can go straight to the 10th level of hell.

The Academy will go ga-ga for a Martin Scorsese remake that shouldn't be happening and a Clint Eastwood film starring Ryan Philipee, Jesse Bradford and Paul Walker.

I disagree actually. I want the movies I like to win, because it stimulates more interest in them, raises their financial return, and the industry is then encouraged to produce more works of a similar nature. These awards or something that pushes (this year) smaller movies into the limelight for awhile, and they benefit form the exposure. Their cast and directors have access to more future projects and funding.

I'll take a WWII drama (not starring Paul Walker), a sword and sandal epic, a foreign love story set in 1872 over this year's dreary lot.

I'm hoping for Flight 93 and Idlewild to make some sort of Academy impact. Well I hope they are fantastic, but after that I hope they garner attention.

The first because I love Paul Greengrass and the second because I like black people... sometimes!

I've read a bunch of articles on it. On top of Greengrass being the director of Bourne Supremacy it looks like he is really doing the story justice. It sounds kind of like a passion-project.

They are going to have to convince me with a better trailer/teaser before I support that.

Out of the two 9/11 films, I think Stone's is more interesting. I could be wrong however, if Flight 93 is anything like Bloody Sunday.

Stone's film will be unchallenging.

CHUD was on the set and says Greengrass (himself being non-American) is not dipping into flag-pumping hysterics or drama for drama's sake.

THAT would be refreshing.

Well, I'll tell you from the trailer, it looked like it was romanticizing the event. All these people on the plane rallying during their final minutes to save another building from being hit, etc, and didn't *feel* like it had any of the political of edgy aspects of Bloody Sunday, nor the ambivalent morality of Bourne. It just seems like something a lesser director looking for a sob-story would do. This is coming from someone who liked his other films, mind you, but is also just based off the trailer, which could be hokey in order to lure audiences to a touchy movie with a touchy subject.

I thought August was another "dumping ground", Roo?

Ah, I hadn't heard this. Than the trailer is definately mis-leading, and I really hope what CHUD noted is true.

For "Blockbusters" and action films, yes. Big films that would do well anywhere? Maybe. For smaller fare, no. August has Apocalypto, World Trade Center, The U.S. vs. John Lennon, Idlewild and Factotem.
