They should really release a photo book for this movie. Anyone know if they will? It seems like the kind of movie they'd release one for, what with its gorgeous visuals and all. They should also release one with all of the FYC ads from The Hollywood Reporter ;).

I've already seen postal cards for it, so I wouldn't count out that photo book... ;)

Nice. ;)

We will have to see how many theaters it loses this week, but for the first time the PTA is in the zone that usually indicates large drops. I wonder whether it will help with the theater situation to have the oscars coming up.

I can't find the thread in which I made my predictions. Since it's in neither Brokeback thread, it must be in one of the dailies

Including this weekend, I'm estimating Brokeback will make another $18m by Oscar night, putting its total just under $81m

2/10-12: $4.6m (-23%)

2/17-20: $4.3m (-7%)
2/21-23: $1.1m
2/24-26: $2.6m (-27% from 3-day)
2/27-3/2: $1.3
3/3-3/5: $2.4m (-8%)

It's after nomination gross will have been just under $30m. I had predicted around a $37m boost.

Normally, BP nominated films hardly drop on Oscar weekend (we are talking 10-20%, I think). And being the frontrunner and all, maybe theater owners will want to keep it till after Oscar night.

But It needs more than a BP win to see a significant bump. And 3 oscars won´t do, either... I think It needs 5-6, and an acting win. Something that doesn´t seem very likely.

Thanks for digging that up
but I had adjusted some of my predictions and posted them in one of the daily numbers threads and that's the one I wanted to find.

Still, thanks

It looks like it's actually gonna drop this weekend. The weekdays haven't been too promising. It's Tuesday was tracking 30% lower than last Tuesday. by the end of the weekend, it should be around $78.5 million give or take a couple hundred thousand.

I don't think the looming Oscars will help BBM. There's been so much buzz already that anyone who wanted to see it sans Oscar win has seen it. The only demographic that hasn't seen BBM is those who will go if BBM wins the Oscar. And, it has to win. If BBM loses BP, they may as well pull it from theatres on Monday.

But I predict strong (not record-breaking) rental numbers.

I think, being the frontrunner at all, that just a BP win won´t be enough. It needs a mini-sweep, and a beautiful face as a winner on the cover of every newspaper (Jake, Heath, Michelle) to bring more people in.

Hope I´m wrong, though.

Yes, I also think that one of the actors really needs to win the statuette for the bump be even more significant...

Well obviously every award it wins will help, but the main thing is the Best Picture and Best Director awards. It at least has the Best Director award in the bag. If it wins Best Picture it will get to 100 Million for sure. It will provide it with the boost it needs to get there.

Brokeback' Star Slammed by Former School

Brokeback Mountain actress Michelle Williams has been disowned by her former school because of her role in the controversial gay cowboy romance. Williams, who attended exclusive Santa Fe Christian School in San Diego, California, has been blasted by the school's headmaster as "offensive" for acting the long-suffering wife of a homosexual ranch hand, played by Heath Ledger. Jim Hopson has branded the Oscar nominee a poor role model, and hopes his education establishment won't be linked to the film's themes. He tells the San Diego Union Tribune, "We don't want to have anything to do with her in relation to that movie. Michelle doesn't represent the values of this institution. Brokeback Mountain basically promotes a lifestyle we don't promote."

A children's book about two male penguins that raise a baby penguin has been moved to the nonfiction section of two public library branches after parents complained it had homosexual undertones.

The illustrated book, "And Tango Makes Three," is based on a true story of two male penguins, named Roy and Silo, who adopted an abandoned egg at New York City's Central Park Zoo in the late 1990s.

The book, written by Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson, was moved from the children's section at two Rolling Hills' Consolidated Library's branches in Savannah and St. Joseph in northwest Missouri.

Two parents had expressed concerns about the book last month.

Barbara Read, the Rolling Hills' director, said experts report that adoptions aren't unusual in the penguin world. However, moving the book to the nonfiction section would decrease the chance that it would "blindside" readers, she said.

Em, how can it be in the fiction section? It's like saying that a book about two black parents ought to be moved to fiction, since, you know, those black people- they don't exist :-0

Hehe

Actually, in all seriousness, I think the fact that the libraries succumbed so easily to the requests of two parents mirrors the lenience our society has towards homophobia. :disgust:

My 12-year-old niece is reading a book she got from her school library about a girl who got raped. Now it doesn't bother me too much since she's pretty mature when it comes to being able to handle themes like that, but I couldn't help but think how a lot of parents wouldn't have as much of a problem with a book like that being in the school library as they would a book with a gay character. You're always hearing about books with gay characters being banned from schools or at least being complained about by parents. A lot of times gay kids who are confused about how they feel can't even get books from their school about it. Thankfully there's the internet now so they can look up info.
