Very well-done film. Instead of being the expected sugarcoated Walt Disney Pictures release, EIGHT BELOW surprises and shows a surprising taste for realism. Also, the dogs, either through master training or complicated editing, deliver fantastic animal performances. Even usually dull Paul Walker delivers a fine performance. Just a beautifully-shot, exciting action-drama.

Pretty nice movie but the movie just always has the feel that we all know everything will come together for everyone.

Anyway, enjoyable Fluff.

Really liked the one scene from where one found the whale to fighting the walrus, or whatever that creature was, as a group.

some small questions I just thought of

- what kind of dogs were they and how do they sleep outside in sub-zero ( actually negative 50 below ) weather?
- wonder how the second dog died and whether that was cut or just not put in.
- at the end there were 2 collars on the cross, I guess for the 2 dogs that died.

and the big question - as this was based on a true story.

as it was 180 days later, it should seem that they could have flown in on a plane and not taken that ship > how long would take ship have taken over the next 100 miles.

Beautifully shot with great views of the arctic. The dogs were well trained and believable. While you knew that they would be rescued, they took a nice chance on eliminating two of the dogs, and almost a third. It put a little suspense in the film. Loved how the dogs banded together and didn't all scatter in their own direction. Maya was my favorite, with rascal Max coming next.

The human actors were ok too,lol especially Jason Biggs- the comic relief. The girl friend was ok, if a bit bland through out the movie. Paul Walker was ok, but I really didn't get the feeling of desperation from him that the movie was trying to portray. It's like he just moped around and I wanted to kick him in the pants.

The movie didn't sugar coat how hard it is in antartica. You really felt the cold come through in some of the scenes. I could never live like that or in such a place for 6 months at a time.

All around a good solid movie. There were a few scary parts that kids may not like or be afraid of, and seeing at least two of the dogs pass away may upset them, but a gentle talk will clear things up.

Delightful.

Breathtaking scenery, cute (and wonderfully-emotive!) animals, balance between humor, tears and suspense, etc. What more could you want?

Even Paul Walker is good here. Very nice surprise.

The best thing about the movie is the Antartic sceneary. The entire film is beautiful to look at. That saying though, this is the first Disney film I have seen in awhile, where it remains true to the actual nature of survival, especially in a kids film. This is a good and bad thing at the same time. It's good in the sense that it's true to life. Say if this did happen to a bunch of dogs, it's obvious not all of them are going to survive. Even if one survives, that's luck. That saying though, for Disney I was expecting all of them to make it. Not to ruin it, but they all don't, and the way that the two go out are especially brutal. This brings me to my next point.

This is not exactly a film where all of the kids can come, even though it's PG, especially if they love any animal of any kind. The seal attack, what the hell? The dog falling and breaking it's leg? That seemed to go on for 20 minutes. Even for me, that's bordering on brutal.

It's kind of a doubled edge sword, but the film succeeds nonetheless, even with some odd plot points aside. For instance when Bruce Greenwood finally agrees to back the expedition to rescue the animals just because he saw a picture his son drew of the dogs that saved him. He couldn't think for himself about that, that he needed his son to remind him?

Still, the film is somewhat realistic, the scenary is beautiful, and the acting is somewhat involved.

Also, quick story. I saw the film in Walt Disney World (At the AMC theaters they have down there) in Downtown Disney. As I was coming out of the theater waiting for my mother to come out of the bathroom, I got a chance to see George Lucas buying (Or getting a free ticket since he designed the place) and walking in the lobby, to go into a movie theater (I don't know what he was going to see). I didn't go up to him because I didn't want to disturb him (No one else seemed to know who he was), but being the movie geek I am, that was an exciting experience just to get to see him.

I actually had no desire to see this film at all. but I was stuck in the dalles with no ride for 5hrs so I saw it. Its actually really well done and moving. I still think paul walker can't really act though.

It's decently put together, but rather repetitive and a bit slow. The dogs are all great, and Paul Walker continues to exceed his reputation, while Jason Biggs hams it up as the comic relief. I didn't totally lose interest, but it didn't really deliver entirely for me. C+

Wow… this movie seriously surprised me. I’m a sucker for animal films. The Dogs are some fine actors hell, they even did a better job than the entire cast. The movies is beautiful and very emotional .

The scenes when the dogs were all alone were just priceless . Fantastically trained animals

Solid Disney flick, though I can't say there was anything remarkable about it.

I watched this movie because I had to fill time but I was surprisingly really involved the whole time. The dog scenes were fantastic. Very good 'action' sequences as well. B+

I was sure I wrote a review for this one, too! Anyways - loved it, and I usually don't care for "dog movies" - very, very well done...

Hmmmm. Much better than I expected. Family friendly but pretty believable, a better-than-usual performance from Paul Walker, nice scenery, and some well-trained dogs add up to a nice movie. I actually jumped in the scene with the killer whale and the leapard seal. My grade: B.

The dogs are the stars. Whenever the film shifted its focus to humans, the quality dipped. The dogs are so well-trained, and their affections of each other felt real. I also jumped at scene when seal suddenly attacked. B.

Like xiayun has said, the dfogs are the stars. I have never expected to be this invlved in the proceedings and I really felt sad for the dying dogs. They acted better than Paul Walker (surprise, surprise)! The scenes without the dogs were mostly dull, the scenes with them very powerful. I also jumped when the seal came out of the Orca...

I think its just me but, this is being underrated big time. IMO, this was one of the most visuaLLy engaging yet heart-warming fiLms of 2006 and was one of the best from that year.
