This was the first episode I felt really pushed the envelope and used the freedom granted when working for a pay channel.

It still wasn't very good, though.

Which proves sex on Showtime is ok but violence is not.

I agree by the way about the zombie DP.

That was one zombie gangbang going on there.....
Im glad they either edited out or didnt sho0w the part of the woman as a granny getting it on though
Yeah I do agree it was one of the worst episode for MOH since Dance with the Dead

Clive Barker does put alot of weird eroticism in his horror novels though

Why does "Masters of Horror" completely fuck up the zombie episodes (Dance of the Dead; Homecoming; Haeckel's Tale)? I love zombies (not enough to have sex with them, though), but those episodes sucked bad. "Homecoming" was fun at the time, but in retrospect, it was too absurd to be taken seriously, and even too absurd to be a parody.

"Sick Girl" is my favorite episode. It was just so much fun. It's sad that of 12 episodes, "Sick Girl" was the only really good episode. "Incident On and Off a Mountain Road" was good, but it was too much of a typical horror story to be great. And "Pick Me Up" I enjoyed a lot. It sucked in a few spots, but I was genuinely enthralled. A fun show. "Deer Woman" was great for the comedy, but in a horror sense, it sucked. "Jenifer" was gory and all, but too predictable to be memorable. So, my recommended episodes are "Sick Girl" and "Pick Me Up", while the other good episodes were "Incident On and Off a Mountain Road", "Jenifer", and "Deer Woman".

On the flip side, "Fair-Haired Child" was completely forgettable after a decent start and a bit of creepiness with Johnny Thing. "Homecoming", as I said, was absurd. It wasn't meant to be taken seriously, but when I hear "Masters of Horror", I expect some top notch shit. Not just shit. "Dreams in the Witch House" really did nothing for me. "Chocolate" has continued to decline in my mind in quality, and I really don't remember much about the show. "Cigarette Burns" had some good blood and gore, but aside from that, too dark. Not a good kind of "too dark", either. Then you got the crap episodes called "Dance of the Dead" and "Haeckel's Tale".

For the sake of two above average episodes amidst 10 episodes that range from decent to horroble, I think that was a serious waste. I hope Season 2 is better.

When everything is said and done (I doubt the show will last past season 2), I think Masters of Horror was a noble experiment that didn't work. Considering the talent involved, that's very sad.

I completely agree with the above two posts. Calling this season anything other than a disappointment would be generous.

Incident On And Off A Mountain Road - B
Dreams In The Witch House - C+
Dance Of The Dead - C
Jenifer - B-
Chocolate - D+
Homecoming - B-
Deer Woman - B
Cigarette Burns - B-
Fair Haired Child - B-
Sick Girl - B+
Pick Me Up - C+
Haeckle's Tale - C-

The only two i'd even bother watching again are Deer Woman, which was hilarious, and Sick Girl, which was the only genuinely good episode.

Hopefully the Miike episode is good. I'll pick it up on DVD, for sure.

Here's hoping season two can turn things around. With Rob Zombie and Del Toro, who knows.

Exactly. It's just a severe disappointment that such great talent couldn't produce any classic episodes. The whole show should have been incredible. If someone told me that this show was made by a bunch of up-and-coming horror writers and directors that didn't make any big movies yet, I would believe them. If this was the big start for certain writers and directors, it would be plausible. So, I really hope Season 2 delivers a few more great episodes.

"How can you have Masters of Horror without the creator of Child's Play Don Mancini?! You can't! It comes as great news today that Arrow in the Head is reporting via a scooper that Don's 60-minute feature will revolve around an antique dealer and the spooky happenings he experiences after taking in a new piece of inventory -- a originless vintage doll. No more details were revealed to them at this time, and this has yet to be confirmed. Watch this spot for more."

This would be excellent news. Anyone who saw Seed Of Chucky knows Mancini has a wonderfully original visual style, and he has a knack for the uber-depraved. And he's dealing with a topic close to his heart - dolls coming to life!

I dont quite have that type of problem with the show. While there are mediocre episodes like Dance of the Dead, Chocalate and Haeckle's Tales, the rest of the episodes werent too bad or at least provided enough substance for the series. Even horror series like Tales From the Crypt sort of suffers from the same problem as Masters of Horror. Just like MOH, the better episodes for TFC were the humorous ones like "Whats Cookin" and "Top Billin". Most horror series is the same thing including "Monsters" or "Tales from the Darkside". Not so much Tales from the Darkside since it was much darker than the other horror series I mentioned, its theme music was alot creepier too

Tales from the Darkside's opening still creeps me out.

DVD Schedule for "Masters of Horror"

March 28th
-Dreams in the Witch House (Ep. 2)
-Cigarette Burns (Ep. 8)
-2-Pack of Dreams and Burns

May 9th
-Incident On and Off a Mountain Road (Ep. 1)
-Chocolate (Ep. 5)
-2-Pack of Incident and Chocolate

June 27th
-Deer Woman (Ep. 7)
-Sick Girl (Ep. 11)
-2 Pack of Women and Girl

July 18th
-Pick Me Up (Ep. 9)
-Homecoming (Ep. 6)
-2 Pack of Homecoming and Pick Me Up

August 15th
-Haeckel's Tale (Ep. 13)
-Jenifer (Ep. 4)
-2 Pack of Jenifer and Haeckel

September 26th
-Imprint (Unaired episode)

I'll probably get the two-pack of "Deer Woman" and "Sick Girl", and individually buy "Pick Me Up".

I really don't like the DVD cover art (they show the cover for "Dreams in the Witch House"). Looks horrible, actually. I assume the face is Stuart Gordon. I really could do without the face of the director on the covers.

The numbering provided is from TVShowsonDVD, and doesn't go along with the actual episode airdates ("Haeckel's Tale" is listed as Episode 13, whereas it aired as Episode 12, which means it probably was the 13th episode produced). The only episodes without a release date are "Fair-Haired Child" and "Dance of the Dead",

Anyone want to bet that we'll see "Masters of Horror: Season 1" on DVD near Halloween? Actually, Halloween falls on Tuesday this year, which would be the ideal day to release the first season.

Well, I just saw my first Masters of Horror episode.

Takashi Miike's Imprint.

A few thoughts... Billy Drago's a terrible actor. Aborted babies are freaky. Seeing needles inserted into someone's fingernails up close is something I don't think I'll ever enjoy. And a woman hanging upside down from one leg peeing on herself isn't as horny as I'd once suspected.

Also, I'm a big fan of prosthetics and practical effects when it comes to gore and monsters. But the main creature in this looked so much like a boglin, I couldn't help but chuckle.

I have no idea if it was better or worse than those that came before it, as I haven't seen any of other episodes. But if I was forced to grade it, I'd go with a B.

Thanks, Snrub! I feel like I owe you a handjob or something.

Anywho, I'll definitely be picking up the Sick Girl and Deer Woman two pack. How nice of them to package the two best episodes together.

Hmmm, will I regret it if I pick up the entire series?

Yes.

The only two episodes that I would even bother with again are Deer Woman and Sick Girl. The rest range from mediocre to just down right terrible.

Hmmm. That's hard to believe considering all the talent involved, but I trust you, makeshift. I'll try to rent most episodes then first.

Don't just take my word for it. Check out all of the other grades and comments in this thread, too.

Yeah, I'd definitely rent them first.

Yeah, I noticed that the general reception for the series seems to be lukewarm at best (with Tobe Hooper's episode being the worst or at least among the worst apparently). I just find it surprising...

Seems that I might like Homecoming, Deer Woman and Sick Girl the most, and interested in Cigarette Burns as well (might be just for director).

Will trouble myself to get those 4.

I am certainly most interested in Chocolate, Cigarette Burns, Deer Woman and Imprint.

Sounds like reception is good for Sick Girl, but I found Lucky McKee's May very disappointing.

Chocolate is an abomination.

Homecoming is interesting, but it goes way over the top and into complete cheese land before it's over. I'd give it a rent, though.

Cigarette Burns has an excellent story and some great gore, but it never really goes anywhere. A rental, for sure.

Really, Sick Girl and Deer Woman are where it's at for me. Sick Girl is the overall best episode (it's extremely bizarre, though), and Deer Woman is just flat out hilarious. Watch it expecting something like American Werewolf In London only more goofy, and you'll have a blast.

Fair Haired Child would probably be worth a rent, too, if you've never seen Chris Cunningham's Rubber Johnny.
