The civilization on Lisa's experiment was supposed to be an homage to a Twilight Zone episode. Most, if not all Treehouse of Horror episodes are alterations of Twilight Zone or other supernatural-themed stories.
Branching out of the Treehouse episodes, regular Simpsons episodes frequently parody/pay homage/ or are inspired by famous works and other pop culture stuff.
BAck to the topic I find The War at Home disgusting, Yes, Dear and Stacked asinine, and Still Standing disgusting and asinine.
