I think a lot of you will be disappointed. It's a good film. Miller's direction is very strong. Obviously Hoffman is great. But the film is surprisingly hollow from an emotional standpoint. It doesn't really stick with you the way it should. It's distant.

I think I'll pass.

I'm still trying to motivate to see North Country though. *yikes* I would have skipped it if it only got one acting nom, but two? I still may not get around to watching it....

And again.....unless you are somehow contractually bound, I recommend no one take the time out of their day to watch North Country, a movie that, in its own painful little way, is every bit as paint-by-numbers as, say, Annapolis.

As I said before, I get easely annoyed at Hoffman's accent in this (if that was the intention, then congratulations man!).. and I just watched like a minute of footage.. maybe it's just a matter of context (earing the voice out of context, I mean)...

I agree. And I think Hoffman was supposed to sound like that, which is a credit to his ability, since he doesn't usually. I liked the style of the movie alot too, and ultimately its a compelling story of one man having misgivings about his actions. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't, so to speak.



I know. It looked dreadful, so I really doubt I'll see it anyways. I didn't even think the acting llooked spectacular, so I know these are space filler noms instead of getting creative and looking towards either big movies (Watts) or small movies (Kilcher).

Eh, if I see any of the acting films I've missed, it'll most likely be Hustle and Flow, which I wanted to see but somehow missed in theatres.

Yeah, Hoffman nailed the accent. It took me a while to adjust to. At the time I rated his performance as good. Later I went back and watched Hoffman's earlier films such as Almost Famous and realized he didn't sound anywhere close to that in real person. I was immediately more impressed with the whole Capote performance.

I'd always wanted to see it - I've studied Capotea little and read In Cold Blood last year - but now it's pretty much necessary.

I might be seeing it this weekend. Or Good Night.

I totally agree.

The film was excellent on a technical level, with top-notch acting and a solid screenplay.

But I just felt disconnected from it all. I was aware I was watching a movie the whole time, instead of getting "lost" inside of it.

Also, Dolce, I liked North Country. It wasn't stupendous, but it was about as inspiring and rousing as one would expect from a movie like this. The acting is strong, especially Theron and Richard Jenkins, who deserved an Oscar nomination.

I think you would like Good Night more, honestly. Knowing your taste.

Unless Capote somehow wins Best Picture, I'll pass.

I wasn't saying Capote was a bad film. I gave it an A in fact. What I am saying is that like Monster, Transamerica, Ray, Nixon, the real reason to see the film is the lead actor's complete and utter transformation.
