What's the worst Memoirs of a Geisha can do at the Oscars?

Well, incredible for Geisha then. I am content with those because it actually did deserve them. Technically, it was extremely well-made. It should at least win two, I think.

Something like this: - Supporting Actress - Art Direction - Costume Design - Score/Cinematography The Last Samurai, which also starred Ken Watanabe - and was also set in Japan, got Supporting Actor, Art Direction, Costume design and Sound but I still think it'll get Picture and Director, along with at least 5 other nominations..
I was close enough, back in November..
btw.. for me, Score is a bigger category than Sound Effects (Pearl Harbor's win)..

I'd say it's similar to Mav with Walk the Line. He is a big fan of Johnny Cash and has been the supporter of the film since day one way before it was released, and even though the film didn't end up at the top of his yearly list, it's good enough (Mav had A-) that he feels comfortable continuing pushing for it through the award season.

I think Geisha did very well for being critically panned.
It's kinda weird to think it could have so easily been the most nominated film. I mean, even if it wasn't considered the best of the year but had still been in the race (and considering the amount of small nominees, it wouldn't have been hard to get in) it could have scored Actress, Supporting Actress, Picture, and probably another tech as well, which would have given it about 10 nods.
I'm not an enthusiastic supporter for the film, but it was very well made and so I'm happy it got recognition in that department.

Glad to see it did well.
Don't ask me about the sound categories, but it most certainly deserved the other four.

Im so happy Geisha did so well with 6 noms. Raffiki i was thinking the same before - it could so easily have had 10 nominations.

So what do you guys think will it win?
I think it will win two, Art Direction and Costumes.

Same two for me. I think Williams will split his votes in Score, and Brokeback, a tremendous score in its own right, will win there. Don't stand a chance in Cinematography. King Kong will win Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing will be a battle between Walk the Line (since Ray won last year) and King Kong.

You know.
6 nominations ain't too shabby for a movie that had a lower score on Rotten Tomatoes than films like The Exorcism of Emily Rose and The Brothers Grimm.

It almost had 7. And if Makeup people hadn't excluded it from the semi-final list, it might have 8 without sniffing the biggest categories, tying the lead. That would have brought some kind of press.
This could've easily been Geisha vs. BBM if just a few things had turned out differently (a little better script/direction and a little kinder critic reactions), given how weak the rest of contenders were (or lack of enthusiasm). I think The Aviator would've won BP easily if it were released this year, although I still give Ang a upper hand in direction. Geisha could've been The Aviator of 2005; oh well.

Yeah, I think so too.
I am sure Zhang Zyi was #6 or #7 in the Best Actress category (depending on how well Allen has fared) and the make-up exclusion is ridiculous to begin with.

So, did it get 6 or 5 nods?

6, although I admit two Sound noms are too much for it.

Wow, extremely well deserved.
It would have been awesome if Gong Li got a nomination, though... Heh.
