I think Narnia saved the year, or at least helped it an awful lot. People expected to make 150-200 million, and it's going onto nearly 300 million. On the contrary, almost all the other films did what people thought they would (except Kong, which obviously underperformed). Narnia is the best!

Sith was expected to shatter opening records and be No.1 for the year - nothing new there. Still it brought back moviegoers taking Madagascar and Longest Yard along for the ride, after a few weeks of lacklustre BO.
Narnia and Potter did better than expected and saved the year. As did the 1-2 punch of Wedding Crashers/Charlie! Sadly their performance was dimmed by the Island/Stealth double whammy. I agree Magnus - The Island was an enjoyable popcorn flick that looked good - how it failed like that is bizarre. 5 years ago this film would have made $150m.
Batman wasnt really that bad a dissapointment. It rallied well after an average opening. Much more than $220-30m i dont think it could have made coming off Batman and Robin.
Hitch was a megahit that saved pre-summer from total disaster and we tend to overlook Mr and Mrs Smith which was a big June success and fairly leggy.
War of the Worlds was solid - about what could be realistically expected. I thought it would do better but it could have easily did less aswell.
Infact, add in Fantastic Four (another overachiever) and had Island/Stealth not bombed - July would have been MEGA!

It's not a dissapointment had it not been that amazing. I mean, a blockbuster that is this amazing, it has to be near 300m. Very rare do you get such a thing where a blockbuster is this amazing. There was a huge auidence who missed out one of the the best(if not the best) films of 2005. It's a dissapointment because I know that with a bigger opening, it could have achieved still very simliar legs and gotten close to 300m. Stupid WB for freakin messing up marketing. They better not screw up Batman 6, because honestly, that just has so much potential
Unfortunatley alot of films that are great films tend not to make as much as they should. Batman is just on a higher level (blockbuster level). The real test will come with the next Batman film - that will have high expectations!

I think more than anything it was the opening weekend that was muted. This lead to about a $50-$70m overall loss of gross. This IMO was brought about by the general public's cynism of the franchise after the last film. Alot outside the net world would have given up on Batman and the fact that Nolan (with quality films behind him) was directing a new Batman. In the end the solid legs are an indication that some of the cynics were won over by good WOM. More will be won over on dvd - making the next one huge. There will be no excuses for the next one.
Personally ive never been a big Batman fan - but Begins won me over. Bigtime!!

I don't BB's performance had as much to do with marketing or Batman and Robin specifically (except giving the overall impression the franchise had run its course) fifth Batman film in release. Look at Kng Kong and War of the Worlds and Charlie and the Factory...there seems to be so much elasticity audiences have for a concept, especially one that feels a little dusty. And the Batman concept did feel dusty. You can get any of the previous Bat movies on dvd for five dollars apiece. They're constantly shown on cable. Batman's origin is common knowlege...the franchise is almost twenty years old.
I think the next one could make more...but not that much more. Maybe up to 250 million...depends on what X-Men 3 does. Warner Brothers could have done a little more in drumming up excitement, but I think there's only so much commercial mileage you can get out of something with fancier bells and whistles...and even with a perfected way of implimenting that story.

so it really isn't looking to good for Mr. Potter > Narnia snuck up and got Kong, Spielberg, Potter and everyone in 2005 but George Lucas. Maybe one of the years big surprises along with Wedding Crashers passing 200 Million.

Note, anyone choosing the last 2 unknown slots > It would be interesting if you listed the movie you are thinking of.
For me, it was a tough choice between Batman and Kong but I went with Batman.

Well, I seem to be the only one who liked Charlie and the Chocolate Factory more than all the others. It was difficult to choose, though, as I really enjoyed HP, Narnia, and SW as well... But CatCF won out.
