The top 6 are all from different studios. That's always neat. Also, it looks like with the Friday hold, Narnia will get #2 for the year. Narnia's success will keep up the whole HP/LOTR theme, and we could have a 15 year span of HP/LOTR/Narnia films dominating in the market.

Actually, I think HP and Narnia saved the year. Those two films brought a huge holiday season that made 2005 not as disastours as it could have been

No, Sith saved the year. It's what got people going to the movies again and saved the summer, which is the most important time of the year for box office.

How did Sith 'save the summer' at the beginning of the summer? Its gross was expected.

Now, Wedding Crashers and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Both of those 'saved the summer.'

Oh, it was expected to shatter opening weekend records? I wasn't aware of that.

Sith saved the summer.

If only it did shatter the record? Let's not give it more credit than what it deserves. It's #2.

It did shatter the record, and I don't recall very many people thinking it would and I recall many claiming that Lucas had lost some of his audience.

It's amazing how hindsight makes people forget.

Exactly. Not official weekend record though, but much more important Thu-Sat weekend record.

I'm not sure how the summer was even saved considering how down it was.

Bulll.

First of all, you can't even say that people weren't predicting a huge weekend. Out of the 82 predictions made in the Sith Prediction Thread, 41 (exactly one half) people predicted $100+ million opening weekend (3-day).

There were very few who didn't expect atleast $300+ million total out of Sith. Did it help the summer? Of course. It helped the whole year, giving it the only $300+ million in 2005. Save? It's not like we expected it to gross $50 million total.

Flightplan seems like such an odd movie compared to the rest of the top 20.

Narnia was a beast.

Kong, Batman(yes I said Batman) disappointed. #5 and #8 were grandly lower than what anyone expected.

But ranking-wise, I think FWD&J is the biggest disappointment of all. Only #19(though it will go up a wee bit more). So much for one of the biggest movies of the year.

I think Narnia saved the year, or at least helped it an awful lot. People expected to make 150-200 million, and it's going onto nearly 300 million. On the contrary, almost all the other films did what people thought they would (except Kong, which obviously underperformed). Narnia is the best!

Sith was expected to shatter opening records and be No.1 for the year - nothing new there. Still it brought back moviegoers taking Madagascar and Longest Yard along for the ride, after a few weeks of lacklustre BO.

Narnia and Potter did better than expected and saved the year. As did the 1-2 punch of Wedding Crashers/Charlie! Sadly their performance was dimmed by the Island/Stealth double whammy. I agree Magnus - The Island was an enjoyable popcorn flick that looked good - how it failed like that is bizarre. 5 years ago this film would have made $150m.

Batman wasnt really that bad a dissapointment. It rallied well after an average opening. Much more than $220-30m i dont think it could have made coming off Batman and Robin.

Hitch was a megahit that saved pre-summer from total disaster and we tend to overlook Mr and Mrs Smith which was a big June success and fairly leggy.

War of the Worlds was solid - about what could be realistically expected. I thought it would do better but it could have easily did less aswell.

Infact, add in Fantastic Four (another overachiever) and had Island/Stealth not bombed - July would have been MEGA!
