 Superman Returns vs. Pirates of the Caribbean 2 If you only could see one of these movies, which one would you pick:
Pirates of the Caribbean 2
OR
Superman Returns.
(trying to guess which one has the biggest opening weekend. Superman does open the weekend before Pirates, but Pirates has a large fan base because part 1 was really good)

I see POTC2 making upwards of $350 million. I really can't imagine Superman Returns making much more then $300 million.

If I had to choose only one of those to see, itd be Superman Returns. Pirates of the Caribbean (the original) was fun, but it wasn't that great, and certainly not deserving of 2 huge budget sequels. I don't know where else they could go with the series, honestly.
That being said, I'm 95% sure PotC2 will easily outgross Superman Returns.

And as to opening weekend, its going to be close. I'd guess Pirates due to the unknown cast as Superman, otherwise it would have been a toss up with Pirates having way longer legs afterwards.

Pirates will have slightly better legs, I'd say a multiplier of about 3.2 compared to 2.8 for SR, but I expect it to still easily win opening weekend.

So, everyone feels Pirates Of the Caribbean 2 will have a bigger Opening, 3-day weekend than Superman Returns. (even though Superman opens the weekend before Pirates) Also, Entertainment Weekly had a 2006 anticipation poll and Superman won with 38%.... Pirates was 15%... but that only counts for 24,000 votes.
I know Pirates was popular, but what about Spiderman... couldn't Superman have a huge opening weekend like the first Spiderman did?

Where PotC1 had an opening weekend (Fri-Sun) of 40m+, PotC2 is going to make that in a single opening day. PotC1 came out on a Wednesday; PotC2 comes out on a Friday. It's gonna be BIG.
