I could go with the opinions of the two biggest fans of Bad Education and The Crying Game (two of my favorite movies), or someone who called The Fantastic Four "Great" and loves movies like Godzilla.

De.ci.sions.

Hmmm...

Well, Galia had me on the ropes, and loyal's praise has pushed me over. I'm seeing this for sure now. Probably tonight, actually. If not, i'll catch it over the weekend for sure.

I had hoped to avoid seeing this, but the praise is making me wonder.

ARE YOU PEOPLE SURE I'M NOT GOING TO FALL ASLEEP WATCHING THIS?

I did during The Thin Red Line.

Ok, I hate the pressure.

No, won't cave, I'm standing firm at its greatest.

Libs, I've prefaced every comment I've made to people regarding the film with "I'm very not warm to Malick as a director." I'm just not a fan (Badlands aside).

I too was attacked by Tryptophan in The Thin Red Line. That said, what didn't work in a WWII setting, worked perfectly in this tale of love.

It's been about 24 hours since I've seen the film and I can't shake it. It could be the most romantic film I've ever seen. I need to compile a list to make sure.

Libs, I said this before in a different thread, thought it would be applicable, though i haven't seen Thin Red line

I didn't see Thin Red Line, actually. Heavy-handed war movies are a dime a dozen, even if its a well done one. The fact of the matter stands that this is just breathtaking cinematography and score, so it should viscerally hold your attention in a way looking at a war ravaged countryside propbably didn't. Plus, for good or bad, its still a bit of an emotional "love" story rather than musings on mutilation. I really liked it.

I can't picture you falling asleep in a movie that has by all accounts a sizeable romantic aspect.

I went alone. It was one of those movies were I stuck around after the credits started rolling, too. I actually think its a good movie to watch alone, so you can just respond to it. I thought Munich, Tropical Malady, etc were like that too. Ripper, gonna go see New World now too?

Well, Jeff, Benny, Bradley, Termi, Cleric, Loyal, & Gunslinger, I see our work is done here.

I can't wait to hear what everyone else who has peeked in here has to say. Kypade, Lennier, Neo, Libs, Ripper?

I have a feeling that one of my friends (who is a huge American history buff) might really want me and a few other dudes to go see this with him. I'm feeling a bit apprehensive about seeing it though since I fear I will be bored to death  (even though I love watching great cinematography in movies).

Who knows? Maybe I'll go see it. ;)

Pre-thoughts:

I couldn't really judge the general audience's thoughts because there were only about 20-30 people in a 300 seater and spread out all over. But, I did hear a couple kids behind me laughing in a disbelieve/disappointed type way. And when I was walking out to my car there was a girl trailing me calling it "The most boring movie I've ever seen. I would have walked out if I didn't fall asleep." So, there's at least one or two general movie-goers' thoughts.

Initial thoughts:

Which version did I see? From what I understand, he cut down the Dec. 28th version and also re-edited a longer version? Maybe he cut down the Dec. 28th version and than recut another shorter one? I believe it was something like that... but basically, I think there's three cuts of the film: a 120min, a 150min, and a ~170min? Correct?

Fandango lists the film at my theater as 2h30m = 150min...is that right?

If so, I'd probably give the movie an A JUST for managing to make two and a half hours feel like forty-five minutes. Wow, time flew, I was so lost. Anyone debating seeing the film because they're afraid of it being "boring", please, do not fear...I honestly can't imagine not being enthralled... well, unless you're the girl behind me. :O

Secondary:

Pretty sure I loved it. The score is incredible, and very often it's some of the most beautiful filming of the year (but not always - wasn't as impressed as some seem to be.) And I do think the acting was good to great. Kilcher's performance is certainly deserving of the accolades. She was so beautiful (not necessarily physically) and so...I dunno. Full of spirit and... empathic? (I'm not sure how to use the word empathy as an adjective, but what I'm trying to say is it's pretty impossible not to feel for/with her.) I think some people should probably watch it for her performance/character alone.

I don't believe I've seen any of Malick's other films. (I feel as though I'm an expert on 'em, based on reputation, though...I've read so much and really want to see a few...just haven't gotten to em.) That said, he's clearly a visual director. The film was soo incredible when there was no dialogue (or when it was in voiceover narration mode). Just watching the characters interact and just be together was fantastic. Not to say the dialogue was bad, or anything, but I feel it slowed it down some...interrupted the flow. I honestly believe he could have gotten away with far less speech...pretty much just the voiceovers and a little secondary/background interactions. THAT would have really made it lyrical and poetic.

Final:

Yeah, it was great. I'm pretty sure I'll see it again and buy it on dvd...

A note on thoughts initiale:

Quote:
"I asked Green if it was true if Malick had cut a shorter version of the film for the nationwide release next Friday and she mentioned the following details. The version we saw is the 155 minute version that is presently playing in NY and LA. She mentioned that this version "will always exist" but... Malick has trimmed this version and it will be this new cut that will be released when the film opens nationwide. She said that "none of the scenes were cut out, all the scenes are intact, but he did trim down scenes and made a tighter cut of the film".

But, more importantly, she said New Line has agreed to release an extended cut of the film, even longer than the 155 minute cut, to DVD. Again, this was info straight from Producer Sarah Green. It's not as official as if it came from execs at New Line, but that's what she said, for what it is worth. She didn't confirm if the nationwide theatrical cut will be packaged with the extended cut or if New Line will drop the Extended Cut Super Special Edition (with flair!) some months after a bare bones DVD of the nationwide theatrical cut is released".

So maybe the "trim" for the nationwide release was only 5 minutes or so and then he recut the longer one. So there's 150m, 155m and 170-or-so min.

Ask for it back. They haven't started counting yet. Loyal will help you out, he's on the ocunting squad, loved this movie, and we're both feeling properly depresssed it'll get zilch from the Academy. Right Loyal?

Kypade. Mine was about 150, not 170, but much longer than 120. I guess the same reels are still running here, so I probably won't be seeing the same exact version everyone else is apparently seeing. Unless the theatres that got New World under last weekend's expansion got the new reels?

edit*** PE#1, makeshift just asked torri if one could alter their ballots, and torri said yes, so drop him a note too.

Yeah, that's probably what happened...made the 155m, cut it down some (though i don't know that only 5 minutes cut would qualify for a new "edition" of the film) and then went and recut the longer version for the dvd I'd say if you saw it again at the same theater you'd probably see the NY/LA Dec.28th cut, but most theaters just getting it would get the "nationwide" cut. Whatever...point stands, that it flew by and was exceptionally engaging. :O

Nice to see so many embracing this masterpiece. I see we have a nice word of mouth chain forming, despite Zingaling's best efforts to break it ;) .

As far as versions go, mine was the newest, 135 minute cut of the film. Today I happened upon a screener "for your consideration" version that runs 150 minutes. I started jumping around in the movie and noticed an extended sequence that takes place between John and Pocahontas. It comes after the winter, when John goes to trade with that native wearing the black bear pelt on his head. In the scene, the two of them make a place for themselves in the weeds and lie there, sharing a blissful moment. They kiss on the lips at this point, which I had not remembered them doing when I saw it on Friday (I know Rolfe kissed her on the lips, but I don't think Smith did). I'm excited to give this version a full viewing and I'll be sure to look out for where the other extended bits occur.

Thanks Benny, that makes sense. My show started at 7:10 and I was home by 10 (meaning it had to have been out by 9:40 or so...which is 2.5 hr...but i figured there must have been previews (which I missed most of - in the lobby on fone), so the 150m runtime seemed wrong. So I guess Dolce's (Dec.28th) was 150m, nationwide was 135min and then he'll release a DVD cut thats more than 150? That works for me. :o
