Post 'Master/slave' Most Politically Incorrect Phrase
The computer term "master/slave," which was banned as racially offensive by a Los Angeles County purchasing department, was named the most politically incorrect term of the year on Thursday.

Among other terms on the top 10 list of politically charged words and phrases, issued by the word usage group Global Language Monitor, were "non-same sex marriage" to describe heterosexual unions, "waitron" for waiter or waitress and "higher being" for God, a term some people found too religious.

"We found 'master/slave' to be the most egregious example of political correctness in 2004," said Paul JJ Payack, president of The Global Language Monitor.

"This is but one more example of the insertion of politics into every facet of modern life, down to the level of the control processes of computer technology."

---

Also on the list this year were "Red Sox lover," to use in place of "Yankee hater," "progressive" for classical liberal, "incurious" rather than more impolite invectives for President Bush, "insurgents" instead of terrorists in Iraq, "baristas" for waiters, and "first year student" rather than freshman.

LOL, the non-same sex marriage phrase gets the award from me

blah i hate political correctness because the word always gets changed because one person gets "offended" by it... Wow

it pisses me off that the Syracuse Orangemen was changed to Syracuse Orange because it "offended" women. I mean come on, how many women are really offended by the orangemen. Suck it up.

These idiots know nothing of the technology.

What are Hard Drive manufacturers supposed to do know? Make all the drives peers, and have them fight for the bits of data?

Hehe. These are phrases people found offensive.

The interesting thing about these phrases is that they only become offensive the moment those who are offended deem them offensive.

For example, the master/slave term was in no way related to racism and slavery until it was associated with that by those who were offended.

So, in other words, those who were offended were offended by their own interpretation of the phrase, rather than the phrase itself.

The situation would be different if the term was intended to allude to racism and slavery, but I highly doubt that was the case.

But then again, a person could find it offensive that their religious holidays are referred to by a phrase that does not acknowledge their uniqueness and the cultural and historical value the name implies.

You can't win :!:

I thought the same thing. Let us, and Adriana, be kinky together.

Yes, this was the worst pick-up line/effort ever, but, well, it was an effort

The most ironic thing is that the computer industry came out with the new standard recently; in it all drives are connected serially (sorta like USB), and the "master/slave" designation was rendered meaningless. SO the "master/slave" thing will go away, but California's legacy of having retarted (no, not mentally challenged) public servants will stay.

I'm more offended by the term 'mentally challenged'. I mean, what makes those girly men mentally challenged?

Inquiring minds want to know! And so do I!

By the way, I am offended by Reuter's article. It said that "progressive" is used instead of classical liberal, which is most certainly not the case.

I've always thought the word ass-milk was pretty insensitive.

There has to be a better way to describe the homosexual act of drinking your semen after it comes out of your partner's anus.

How about booty gravy?

I'm kind of puzzled why they would change freshman to first year student. How could you get offended by freshman?
