 The WESTERN THREAD. What are your favorites? What are your views on Westerns. I love them as they are such a mixture of simple and complex ideas in the same movie.

Best western: Lonesome Dove. Like NCAR said, it's TV, but it's the best western and the best mini-series I've ever seen. It's required viewing for anyone who's remotely interested in Westerns.
Also, Open Range and Dances With Wolves (yes, it's a Western) are great.
It's been so long since I've seen older westerns, but I would mention True Grit and The Searchers.

I name the stars to see what I have seen. But a great list.

The searchers is the greatest of them all,Its in my top 10 alltime films.
Also staring john wayne,red river is the second best western.John wayne was THE man.
The good,the bad and the ugly is also very good.
Can the grapes of wrath be considered a western?thats also one of the great films.

Man it's such a good genre.
Among old westerns, I'm not much of a Wayne fan though I do find Dean Martin and James Stewart were surprisingly good in westerns.
I really didn't like High Plains Drifter, it had no moral compass. Eastwood's character rapes a woman in the early scenes.

Okay, maybe that's not how it goes... But, it was the first western I ever watched next to Open Range (also very good), and, even after watching Unforgiven, A Fistful of Dollars, and The Searchers, it still stands out. Esp. the score
