Post From the director of The Crying Game comes....
...Breakfast on Pluto.

The story of a boy left at the doorstep of a priest who grows up and goes to London to find his mother. The cast is quite rich, with Cillian Murphy playing Patrick, his adoptive father being Liam Neeson, and the London rock performer (?) Stephen Rea, who takes Patrich under his manipulative wing.

I've seen the trailer for this, and maybe its the soundtrack and that Children of the Revolution song (who sings it?), but this film looks fantastic! Its reception amongst critics is remarkable poor, but c'mon, its directed by Neil Jorden, so it's still piquing my curiosity.

Really, I can't wait to see it when it opens this weekend.

Anyone else heard anything about it yet? If its even half the movie The Crying Game is, it will still be interesting.

The poster looks great. It'll be interesting to see Cillian Murphy in a different role, after having played a villain twice this past year.

Well, the good sign is the imdb user reviews is up to 7.4 with 118 votes in. Still rotten over at rt, those critics have no taste. :glare:

He looks like he's going to really be exploring color, synthetic application, and imagination. And it's nice to see Rea coming back to work with Jordan. The entire cast looks great actually!

I can't wait! Cillian is on fire this year! I've been extremely impressed with him in everything he's done so far. Then there's the dependable Stephen Rea and the awesome Neil Jordan....

*swoons*

This is lookin' good

Dammit, Liam stuck in another father figure role when he should be drinking martinis and getting gadgets from Q.

 Interesting Bond casting choice.

He worked with Jordan in michael Collins actually, so it seems the entire cast was eager to work with the director again. He must have a strong comport with his actors. And I think he plays less of a father figure and more of an overbearing and antogonistic one here, actually. At least the trailer made it look as such. A devoutly religious man who doesn't want Murphy's character to go searching for roots.

Really, everyone is dependable here, and it'll be nice to see Murphy play a bright-eyed innocent youth over his last two turns as manipulator and villain. I'm sure its going to be rough to palate for some, as it seems to be quite a bit about how fresh eyes see the big city. Loud noises, bright colors, chaos, and were Murphy takes that and makes it part of himself (for good or bad). He's going to get lost, but there' no saying if he'll find himself again or in what way.

The scene were Rea has him chasing all these woman thinking its his mother was really sad. Even in the trailer I got sniffly.

Finally saw it guys!

Working on the review right now. I have to admit, it was uneven but interesting. I kind of like how Jordan never quite got a grip on Pluto. I assumed it would have the control and finish of Crying Game, but instead it was all over the place. Situations felt ephemeral, some had specters that lingered or had consequences in Patrick's actions, but overall the tale was told from Patrick's fantastical eye.

Hm, I saw this tonight.

First, I thought what's his face, Patrick's actor, gave a great performance, one of the best of the year...this was the guy from Batman? Wow.

Anyway, I really enjoyed it. Not anything that new or special, but presented in such a way that makes it one of the most unique films of the year.

Coupla problems...Is every man in Europe either blind or gay? Honestly. I think after about the 6th or 7th little segment thing, where he meets some man, the director/writer shoulda realized it was about time to bring it all together. Yknow? Just a little repetitive. Might have something to do with how much info and character developement was stuffed into it. Honestly, I checked the time thinking it must be almost over, and it was only one hour later!

But other than that, I really, really enjoyed it.

Though, I couldn't really get a read on Patrick's character...was he really so naive and...well, ill? Or was he brilliant and condescending? I dunno what to have thought on him.

So, hm, yes, liked it quite a bit...just coulda used a little trim trim here and there.

Its playing in Orlando? I might make a drive for it. I'd say it's my most anticipated movie at this point and it doesn't seem to be coming to Tampa anytime soon.

As an aside, I love the website. Cuteee.

Absolutely...probably my favorite use of music of last year. (Though I could certainly be forgetting something)

I just saw this, I was a bit underwhelmed by the end of the film as it felt too episodic and muddled overall. If I understand correctly, it pretty much follows the structure of the book but that type of structure didn't really translate that well onto the big screen for me. There was too much going and once it seemed like the story was heading in some sort of distinct direction it would jerk us into another one of those psychedelic sidetrips. Sure some of them are fun and well-done, but after awhile it gets tiring. The search for his mother holds the plot together barely, but even that is lost sight of at certain points. I also felt that the shifts in tone were often jolting, one scene that stands out in particular for not meshing with the rest of the film is when Kitten's mentally challenged friend dies in an explosion. There are a few others that fit this bill as well.

And why IS it that practically every single old man that Kitten comes across wants to have sex with him? I know you have to suspend your disbelief for a movie like this but when practically every man who comes into contact with Kitten drools all over him it affects the believability of the story. I also hated the foreboding scene where everyone is happily singing "How Much Is that Doggy in the Window?" You just knew that something horrible was about to happen, how could you not?

However, I did love the soundtrack and the whimsical feel of the movie. And some of the sidetrips were pretty genius, I really liked the beginning of his fling with the rock star and the fantasy sequence where he's vanquishing terrorists with a few spritzes of his perfume. Though Cillian Murphy's voice got a bit irritating after awhile since I found him pretty incomprehensible at times, he does pull off the character very well by making him endearing, funny and yet inherently flawed all at the same time. and I'd be lying if I said he didn't look like one fine woman by the end of the movie. Could've been great had Jordan pulled the reins in and narrowed the focus. grade - B-/C+
