I hope Brokeback Mountain sweeps now.
I have nothing else to cheer for. For the second year in a row, my favourite films have been cut out.
I am being premature though, since the Oscar noms aren't even out yet.
PEACE, Mike.
Actually, no, the Chicago win was probably worse. So not quite the worst.
PEACE, Mike.

Well, considering the year... I think it being the worst winner of all time is quite extreme.
However... I, too, am not rooting for Crash. Of all the contenders, the only one that's below Crash in my rooting ranking is Walk the Line.
Although I really thought they could do more with it and it didn't affect me the way I hoped, there is no denying I am all for a Brokeback sweep. I wouldn't mind a Munich win. I think a Good Night/Luck win would be quite interesting.
I wouldn't mind a Crash win... I'd just rather other films won.
As for Walk the Line... now, that I would call the worst win in history. For such a weak year, having that the winner would just be like pissing on all that was 2005 in films. It wasn't a bad movie. I just, in complete honesty and objectivity, did not think there was anythng special or noteworthy about the film aside from the lead performances, which weren't captivatng either.

Hehe, yes, you're right. I realize now I am being extreme, I admit it. But it will still be a darn poor win for me. Crash awarded THE best picture of the year? Just sounds ridiculous to me. I would place many films above it. *shrug* Just my opinion, of course. If the Academy loves it, so be it.

hehe... funny how I have best on my list but would also place other films above it for the win.

I actually think Crash was slightly better than Munich.
Well, maybe not, but more memorable, and it'll probably hold up much better on repeat viewings than Munich will.

Crash is a fine movie, but not a film worthy of an Oscar nom or *win*
I'd put in the same category as all the other movies getting nominated left and right undeservingly- Walk the Line, 40 year Old Virgin....

Ditto.
I would like it to win as of now, but I have yet to see GNGL, Munich and Brokeback Mountain.

I hope Crash wins Best Picture because Munich has no chance anyway, sadly and neither does Kong. Of the rest, I am rooting for Crash.

Crash is a fine movie, it's just not a movie i'd like to see win Oscar. Crash winning an oscar just shows how poor this year was when it comes to quality movies. Movie like Crash any other year probably wouldnt even be in the running let alone a frontrunner. Well to me it's not a frontrunner, it's gonna have one hell of a hard time winning actually, atleast imo.
Too bad this year wasnt soooo incredibly poor for oscar worthy movies that BB could've had a shot at a nod, maybe when the second one comes out it'll be an even more mediocre year What does Crash have that BB doesnt? Nothing, everything is better in BB except the acting which isnt that much better in Crash, pssh just cause it's a comic flick.

Yeah, I enjoyed Crash a bit, but it doesn't say Oscar to me at all.
If they nominated this, I wish they could've at least considered like you said, BB, or for example something in my wildest dreams like The Jacket. Now that was a great flick, much better than Crash. And it had strong aspects everywhere. The acting, the fantastic idea/screenplay, cinematography, score, art design.

Crash just fooled an awefully lot of people.
Like, nearly everyone.
That's really all it takes...get the people on your side and you're good. (doesnt hurt that it was fairly well made...it *looks* like it could be a Best Picture)
And the year hasn't been very weak at all...just incredibly strange.
Pick 5:
A History of Violence
Memoirs of a Geisha
The Constant Gardener
Brokeback Mountain
Good Night, and Good Luck
Munich
King Kong
Match Point
The New World
Pride and Prejudice
Syriana
Walk the Line
As far as I'm concerned, pretty much every one of those were/are/will be/could have been fine films, and pretty much any combo of 5 of them would be a fairly strong line up. (I mean, compared to last year's Ray, Neverland, Aviator? I'd take Syriana, Line, Brokeback, Gardener and Munich easily.)
It's just that....well, nothing seems to be going their way (in reviews, box office, critics, guilds, etc)...
So we're left with stuff like Crash as a major player.
That's my take, anyway.
(And just to think...a month ago (or less) I was thinking this BP line up could have been the decade's strongest (based on anticipation, mostly)....now it looks like it could be one of the worst. :-/)

Crash becoming a contender doesn't surprise me, audiences gobbled it up when it was first released plus it has that "important" air going on, a great cast, and a director who just wrote the screenplay for last year's Best Picture. If there weren't a ton of love for it floating around, this thread wouldn't even exist.
Anyway I forget what critics' award it was, but there was a point where Crash started showing up more often than one would suspect for a movie that was kind of hit/miss with the critics overall. That was when I started to think it was going to pop up in the Best Picture race, sort of as a wild card 5th nominee. I never thought it would be more in the race than Munich though. And I can't see it winning either, but if the press starts beating the Crash drum again it could surprise.

Again to me, most of those movies ( well from the ones I saw ) were good, but not great. Granted theres still quite a few I need to see. Not much when it comes to Oscar calibur movies on that list and the one i really do think deserves the recognition ( Munich even though I only gave it an A- ) looks like it'll mostly be shut out and I really cant belive it, especially in this year.

You know what? Last year hasn't been great either (in my opinion), at least Academy's selection wasn't.
The only movie I was personally really happy to see up for Best Picture was Sideways. Everyone knows that I wasn't too fomd of Ray up there, but I also thought that The Aviator and Finding Neverland didn't deserve it. Million Dollar Baby was on the edge for me. It was great, but I could probably find four movies that 'd like to see up there much rather than it.
My 2005 picks would have been:
Sideways
Closer
Eternal Sunshine
Spider-Man 2 (yes)
Kill Bill Vol. 2
Thus I think this year and the last hasn't been very strong for me personally. 2003 was way better, I'd say and I haven't even seen LiT yet.

No, I agree...but of the one's I;'ve seen, I'd rather have any one of those than Crash. But put almost any one of them, in (as Lecter says) 2003, and only maybe one or 2 will hold their own.
But, the point is, I think the nominees COULD have been a very solid line up...again, like Lecter says above...last year really only had 2 films going for it. Barring major suckage from the few of those (on my list) i haven't seen, i'd take any three to replace Aviator, Ray and Neverland.
But, yknow, this is all blabbering and opinions, neither of which should be taken too seriously.
The only think I;'m really trying to get out, is that the stuff released had the potential to make me happy...it just is turning out completely different and appears to want to make me sad.

I think I need to see Crash again. My feelings walking out of it are completely different then what I feel now, but that might just be becuase I can't stand the thought of it doing better at the Oscars then Munich.
