Post BUT and how it pertains to the box office.
"BUT" !!!!!!
I'm as guilty as the next person here, I hate the word 'BUT'........

We all do it. You know its coming. The 2 cents we all throw in. "I know what you mean, BUT....." We love watching movies and how they preform, how well we think they're made. When someone says anything contrary to our thinking we just gotta throw in that all famous 'BUT'...Right now Kong is at the center of the 'BUT' world. Truthfully its a close 'BUT' race. Kong is riding both sides of the line and is deserving of all its 'BUTS'. It can truly go either way at this point.

What's always killed me is the pointless 'BUT'. Say a film like ROTS or ROTK had come out and had an opening weekend of 10million and a final of 40million....Say that the movie truly sucked. You know, somewhere on one of these forums, lurking would be the 'BUT' master.... They would have some excuse as to why the film did as pathetically poorly as it did...You know, ('BUT" master): "yes, yes, i understand, 'BUT' you're not taking into account, yada, yada, yada....." "And THATS!! why it unjustly bombed at the box-office"....

I myself am taking a bow,,as I am officially now box-office take, 'BUT' master....I love it (I hate it)...

To anyone who disagrees with me I have one word for you:

BUT!!!!!!!!
-------------------

I think sometimes I have a future vision, hahaha... We all do the same thing in these box-office forums. We make our guesses, discuss the films, give our opinions and our rebuttals. The key in all the fun of this place is the word 'BUT'. It opens the door for all the discussion and debate. Sometimes we all take it to far but thats life and thats what I was hoping that the topic would get people discussing....Sometimes with a movie like say,,,Kong,,,its just not worth the 'BUT'. Its so in the middle everyone is right and wrong. The 'BUTs' that we throw around aren't always needed...

-------------------

I feel this topic is vital to the box-office forum. Its what it is based upon. Its what makes it a forum and not a blog site. 'BUT' lets us chime in and state our opinions. Lets us almost talk with one another... I didnt feel this should go in the Water Cooler. Also it didnt feel right in the Cinemania section. What I've seen going on with Kong and its boxoffice takes has been the first time in months that I felt like letting my 'BUT' be heard. Its brought more people out of the woodwork then anything in the last year.

I thought maybe we could get on the topic of why we debate these 'Box Office' numbers. 'BUT' is a symbol so to speak. Its our voice here. Its what allows us to be heard. Its telling you 'Hey, heres what I think'.

Now, I want some comments on this. Move the topic somewhere else if you wish 'BUT' I see no reason to lock it...

Sorry to go off the topic of the thread

No, not really. I've seen things as this(multiple threads) created before, some locked some not. I cant seem to get an answer from anyone in charge. Theres no reason that the other thread was locked. Move it, maybe, 'BUT' dont lock it.... I left Mojo because I did as best as I could for the members. Sean and I didnt see eye to eye at times. I was willing to let things go, he didnt want to. It was his site. What makes this site so good is the freedom and involvement of its members in the site. I left Mojo with everyone because I believed in them and what they wanted. This makes me feel I made the wrong decision. Its no different then Sean a year ago.

There is NO good reason to have locked that thread. I cant see how you could disagree...

What kills me is that this is so, for lack of better words, STUPID. I dont know why it bothers me so 'BUT' it does.

Doesn't look like many people are discussing this "BUT" topic.

And, like it's been discussed, it's still not box-office related.

Locked.

The thing is, box office figures are often a lot more complicated then it appears on the surface. People will instantly judge a movie's performance on early figures and make huge assumptions. To be fair, the industry has evolved enormously over the past decade. I remember always reading the top five weekend figures in my local paper, and seeing the past weekend's top ten with a little summary in the paper next Friday. Now, we can know if a movie is a hit or a bomb by Saturday morning, if not earlier thanks to DP07's Yahoo Review Thread, which I honestly consider to be the most useful and ingenious box office tool people out of the industry have made in all the years I've cared about movie's grosses. With all these people jumping to conclusions, I think 'BUT' is vital to box office discussion. After King Kong's Wednesday numbers, someone could have made an educated guess that it would have had a weekend of around 25 million before finishing under 70. However, there's an infinite amount of factors out there concerning the box office, and that's where 'BUT' comes in. Yeah, it can be annoying, especially when you're on the other side of the fence to people who appear to be defending/trashing a movie for their personal affection/dislike of the film. But without 'BUT', you'd be hard pressed to find a single informative thread in the forum.

If the 'BUT's weren't capitilized and in quotations, this thread would be a lot easier to read.

...But, I get what you're saying.
