Seriously, people should POST when they rate a movie an "F," this is getting stupid

Shaolin Soccer was leagues better but like someone already said, Kung Fu Hustle is just good entertainment, nothing beyond that and in that respect, does very well for itself.

but NOOO!!! jb007 just had to hate Hong Kong!!!!

Anyway, I love Hong Kong (at Least as of 1995, when I was there last). It is one of the most dynamic places on this planet.

The newer HK movies are not I something I care for.

l basically hated it. It was like a serious Kung Pow, only never funny (well...maybe 3 laughs, and a couple chuckles). The action was ok, but nothing all that special. The "references," or "parody scenes" of other movies almost all failed. l just didnt enjoy it, at all. The score is the only reason l rated D in the poll. That one aspect of the film was really above average (at least compared with the rest of it).

l havent seen any of this Chow fellows other works, and l'm not so sure l want to now.

Nothing special. A lot of the jokes/parody fall flat. Funny in very few spots.

A few pacing problems, but some genuinely hilarious moments and oustanding fight sequences make up for that. The special effects are amazing in this movie. I know my initial reactions to the trailer were underwhelming, but I guess it shows you can't always judge a book by its cover.

It wasn't bad, but I found it very average.

An unfunny comedy saved by some great visuals, but nothing outstanding. C

I actually never looked at the film as a comedy.

I looked at it as a light hearted Kung Fu flick...
If you watch the film expecting to drop dead from laughter, dont watch it period..you'll be disappointed.

Alot of mediocre grades for this movie. Saw it again, still a damn good flick.

Grade - B+

Oh, oh, don't tell MovieDude, but yup, really enjoyed this one too. Not as slapstick as I might have expected after Shaolin Soccer - but that was made up by lots of culturally accurate kung fu legends and fighting sequences as well as a well thought out story. And still lots of laughs ("Why are you speaking English?"). This ones a keeper...

5 out of 5.

The first half of the movie is exhilarating. The style, the choreography, the cinematography...everything is so well-done. The knives-throwing sequence is one of the funniest scenes I have seen in a movie in a long time. I really couldn't stop laughing. The first fight sequence between the three guys from the housing complex and the Axe Gang took me by surprise. I didn't expect it to be as visually stunning and entertaining as it was. Another scene that stuck in my mind is when Stephen Chow's Sing is picking people from the crowd he wants to fight against. Hilarious stuff, indeed.

The movie is full of imagination and the visual effects are superb. The fight scene against the both Harpists is another highlight of the movie. However, once the Beast is unleashed the movie becomes way too over-the-top and goes downhill, in my opinion. Up until then it was a very funny action comedy with unusually great fight sequences and great production values. When it got over-the-top at the end, the entertainment value sank for me. If it wasn't for that, this movie would certainly rank as one of the very best I have seen this year. Don't get me wrong, it is still a great movie and better than 90% of action comedies that come from Hollywood nowadays, but I think it could have been even better.

Having said that, I still enjoyed the movie and its style a whole lot. Stephen Chow has a talent for good comedy, but also for nice action and I'll make sure to check out his earlier works as well. As it stands, it's the second-funniest movie I saw this year so far (behind The Big White).

Haha, you know that the part where you said the movie downhill is like less then a quarter of the whole movie right? Glad to know you liked it though, not that I'm especially surprised, haha.

Great analysis, Doctor. I pretty much agree with everything you said. The first half is simply amazing.

Highly entertaining. Although it wasn't as funny as I anticipated I still enjoyed it a great deal. I thought the fighting scenes were amazing, and the way the CGI was used was really awesome looking. Roger Ebert was right it did look like Looney Tunes in a way. I thought the Landlady was hilarious, and it was a really entertaining flick. I hope the sequel will be just as great as this film.

Great movie, an awesome spoof of kung fu films. The comedy is great. The part when he tries to throw the knives is my favorite part.

A whole lot of nothing. Seriously, stylistically the film was superb in the early parts but got very repetative towards the end which is unfortunate. The story really didn't go anywhere either, but it was fun for the majority of it.
