Sadly, every Wednesday that opens up with less than $10 million (or a little more) will be compared to Shrek 2 This is more like Batman Begins if you ask me. That opened to "only" $15 million on a summer Wednesday. It would surely have had an opening day similar to Kong's had it opened on its slot. King Kong's current word of mouth is fantastic (#7 of all time and an A- on Yahoo, which made up of average joes and not movie geeks like IMDb is), as Begins' was. I remember some doomsayers for Begins as well, and look how that turned out.
Batman Begins opened with $15 million. Kong? $9.8 million. That means Kong might hit $150 million according to you. Plus, Begins had a free second weekend (no real competition) AND it was in the summer AND it opened with a weak $48 million (it should've hit at least $70 million) - this movie may barely hit $40 million.
FLOP.

You don't know that. And while Yahoo could help determine it, it's still not hard evidence of it. Plus, you don't know if 'average joes' reviewed it and not movie geeks. Maybe for Kong, they just did.

Not the Masons, they are a distraction for the conspiracy theorists, it's the Illuminati.

Not only did a lot of people probably not even know it was opening on Wednesday, do you think a great number of people are gonna want to see such a long movie on a Wednesday night? I know I wouldn't.
LOTR had a more established fanbase anyway.

I'll tell ya what went wrong(and you beat me to it Neowolf ) is too much overhype for this movie that apparently only existed with hardcore LOTR/Jackson fans and the casual moviegoer saw the running time and the fact that it's been done already with the 76 version... To some degree, the 76 version was actually better in some aspects than KONG 2005.. 9.7 Million for it's opening day is appalling and a hard pill to swallow for those that hyped the fuck out of this.. It's interesting to see Harry Knowles review and one thing that was mentioned in there: He saw this twice.. Once with the most enthusiastic audience on the entire planet as he put it and the 2nd time was with the most boring, sleep inducing audience he'd ever been with.. He said the difference was, was that the really enthusiastic crowd saw this for FREE and the pay going public was bored to tears and didn't give a shit apparently.. Either way, this is a good movie that perhaps will make a boatload on DVD $$$$$...

I'm not a KONG Hater, but I called it like I saw it and the fact is, is that when the smoke clears and the dust settles, this movie was "C+" material with good FX and still proves that Animatronics are still better than alot of CGI used in this day and age.. That's why I give KONG 76 an "A" over this movie was because KONG looked more realistic at times than Jackson's did..

I know this is going to be pointless to argue with you... as proven every day... but I don't see how the public could be bored to tears... it's opening day... if it has less than a 4 multiplier then you can say people were bored to tears...

Other reasons why the opening sucked would be it's opening mid week, schools not on holiday , college exams, and running time.

That inflated it's Wednesday number. All factors considered, I think it's safe to say Kong would have made as much or more if released on a summer Wednesday as Batman Begins did.
And yay, BKB is here! This is gonna be great.

Lord of the Rings opened with $18 million en route to $314 million. So as I said since this movie made nearly half of its opening day (plus the increased competition by Jim Carrey, Steve Martin and Narnia) King Kong still won't pass $150 million. Horrible movie. Horrible.
As Marlon Brando said and I said after watching this movie... "The Horror... The Horror..." funny that I use this quote however because wasn't that dufus reading Heart of Darkness in the movie? Heh. I hate King Kong. GOdzilla would whoop his ass.

It's from a speculating point of view that I say this and my take on how Knowles described his 2nd viewing and what the audience was like which he said was bored and restless or something to that degree.. Read his review of it.. And I don't give a hoot about all this multiplier garbage.. 9.7 Million is 9.7 Million, no matter how you want to slice it.. It sucks..

9.7 million has NOTHING to do with how people perceive the movie on opening day... and nobody in my 500+ seater theater seemed bored or restless... and when people needed to take their bathroom breaks... they actually RAN so as not to miss much. Oh, and did I mention APPLAUSE at the end?
