 Poseidon Prediction Thread!
POSEIDON
Release Date: May 12th, 2006
Starring: Kurt Russell, Richard Dreyfuss, Emmy Rossum, Andre Braugher, Mike Vogel
Directed by: Wolfgang Petersen (Troy, The Perfect Storm, Air Force One)
Genres: Action/Adventure and Remake
Distributors: Warner Bros. Pictures Distribution
Competition: Mission Impossible 3 (May 6th, 2006), The Da Vinci Code (May 15th, 2006), X-Men 3 (May 26th, 2006)
Plot:
When a rogue wave capsizes a luxury cruise ship in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, a small group of survivors find themselves unlikely allies in a battle for their lives. Preferring to test the odds alone, career gambler John Dylan ignores captain's orders to wait below for possible rescue and sets out to find his own way to safety. What begins as a solo mission soon draws others, as Dylan is followed by a desperate father searching for his daughter and her fiancé--a young couple who hours before couldn't summon the courage to tell him they were engaged and now face much graver challenges. Along the way they are joined by a single mother and her wise-beyond-his-years son, an anxious stowaway and a despondent fellow passenger who boarded the ship not sure he wanted to live but now knows he doesn’t want to die. Determined to fight their way to the surface, the group sets off through the disorienting maze of twisted steel in the upside-down wreckage. As the unstable vessel rapidly fills with water each must draw on skills and strengths they didn't even know they possessed, fighting against time for their own survival and for each other.

Looks really uninteresting, and I'm certain it can't do nearly as much as Troy. That one had endless hype and marketing. Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom do not sell that many tickets IMO, but they certainly didn't hurt. Plus, by the look of it special effects look less impressive.
I think it's another KOH.

KOH was rated R and was following on the heels of countless other historical epics. Plus the trailers were some of the most incomprehensible of the entire year. I don't think this will be huge, but I could see it doing relatively well. Disaster movies have proven to be quite profitable in many occasions, and while this won't be another DAT (although the cast certainly gives me similar vibes), I could see a very respectable 48/135.

I'm only really comparing it in the sense that I expect similar numbers. I don't think Poseidon really has much, if anything, going for it. It looks like another Core.
Anyway, while KOH didn't have the best marketing campaign FOX did as usual make more out of it then they might have. It could have gone the way many other action movies did this year.

165m total. Nothing great but looks to be lightweight fun and by the time it is released I expect good special effects. Poseiden will pull in adults too which is not so easy for a summer blockbuster.

Kind of reminds me of the disaster picks of the mid to late 90s which in turn where revamps of the 70s disaster films:
So I say an inflated Twister/Deep Impact opening weekend and a sub Deep Impact final.

It is released on M-I-3's second weekend (which I expect to be at least $30 million) and in its second weekend The Da Vinci Code will open to at least $40 million while in its third weekend it'll face the $75+ million opening of X-Men 3. No chance for a huge opening and great legs, I think. Moreover, DAT looked infinitely better and with more impressive money shots.
Early Predictions:
Opening weekend - $39.8 million
Total gross - $105 million

Ugggh. I actually liked the original Poseidon but there seems to be nothing that exciting on the trailer, it seems like what someone said a Perfect Storm 2

Looks like The Day After Tomorrow lite (which wasn't that deep to begin with). 45/130

I'm a bit worried about the lack of names for this one. Kurt Russell, Fergie, they attract a little, but they don't scream blockbuster that compete with the rest of May. They needed someone like Brad Pitt to spike the awareness on this.

I'm thinking this will do rather well. I bought the DVD not to long ago and it brought back many memories. If the marketing can tap into the groups that fondly remember the original, this is going to be big. Right now I cant give a rock hard guess,,,anywhere between 30-60mil opening and a final between 130-220mil. I just dont know....

35/110.
I cannot see this completely bombing but it won't be a huge hit either. It looks so cliched after the other recent disaster films and the TV remake of the same material.

This is one of my most anticipated movies of next year, but I think it has a bad release date being it is stuck between Mission Impossible 3 and The DaVinci Code. As long as it makes a 100m domesticly I will be happy. This will probably be big overseas like Day After Tomorrow.

Opening: $40 Mio.
Final: $121 Mio.
Somewhere I read that Poseidon's budget is about 200 Mio? Can that be true?

$140 million? And why does it look so generic and cheap then?

That's why I asked. For me, the trailer looked much more like a $70-$90 Mio. production.
