Yup. And of course, it will win. There's very little in Hollywood that is devoid of bias. You want a documentary to win the Osar? Make one about the Holocaust. You want an actress to win the award? Turn her into an ugly woman. You want to beat Star Wars for best picture? Make a pretentious little snoozefest of a comedy and you'll get your way.

It would have also beat Munich King Kong or any other movie nominated.
But whatever excuses work

Well, Citizen Kane was almost completely snubbed by the Academy. Look where it is now. 2001: ASO lost to Oliver Twist!!! And as for Annie Hall, well, let's just say that Star Wars, I think, has been a more potent cultural force over the last two-three decades. The bitch, you might say, has been owned

You reemmber what Eddie Murphy said in Bowfinger about winning the Best Actor Oscar?
"White boys always get the Oscar. It's a known fact. Did I ever get a nomination? No! You know why? Cause I hadn't played any of them slave roles, and get my ass whipped. That's how you get the nomination. A black dude who plays a slave that gets his ass whipped gets the nomination, a white guy who plays an idiot gets the Oscar. That's what I need, I need to play a retarded slave, then I'll get the Oscar. "
So funny, so true

2001 wasn't even nominated for Best Picture.

Very true indeed. If Spielberg wants another sure-fire Oscar, he can just make a Holocaust love story.

Time to slowly back out of this thread.
PS: I am too sad about Munich missing out.
PS #2: A History of Violence clearly deserves it. Great flick. I am pissed. HOV is a decent movie. But BP nomination is a joke. The Constant Gardener is good but not BP material. Match point.....
Match Point looks like the Best of the bunch to me, actually.

But one of them has to die at the end. Drown in an icy ocean, I'd say.

I believe would have had is incorrect grammar...but ok it would have had (have had have) beat any other movie nominated.

But the survivor never lets go and goes on to save middle earth from the evil Emperor Commodus.

Some of these nominations are very silly (Will Ferrell for Best Supporting Actor? No Munich?), but I guess I applaud the HFP for being different this year.

I saw clips of him in the producers on Ebert and Roeper and he's really really really really funny in the clips

The fact that a lot of these are surprising is good enough for me.
This is a great year.
No Amy Adams, though.
