This might very well end up as one of the year's best-reviewed movies.

I know it's all raves now but I'm starting to think (yeah I know, I was one of the people saying it'd be a major contender not so long ago, but remember...I'm bipolar) it really will go the way of Closer. That is, love it or hate it reaction, a couple of nominations at best . Just a gut feeling.

There has been a lot more love so far for Match Point than Closer at any point. Closer's RT score was never this high from the beginning, and it was distinctly a more love-hate splitted type of films. This is for sure a stronger contender than Closer, even though it may not translate to more nominations.

Most everyone, including those who don't really care for Woody Allen, are getting excited for this movie. Awesome.

But there's a problem with that. Despite the spicy trailer and plot, a Woody Allen movie is still a Woody Allen movie. Unless we're talking Zelig here, the beats and rhythms don't change much.

America hasn't come out for an Allen flick in 19 years, including his one major Oscar horse since Hannah and her Sisters, Bullets Over Broadway.

I'm not sure it really has much of a shot other than Screenplay and maybe Johansson.

I agree with xiayun. Match Point's RT score has at no point been so high and same goes for the IMDB score, if I remember right.

Match Point stands at 8.0/10 with 905 votes:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0416320/

Match Point won't be as controversal as Closer and thus won't split the reactions so much.

80% should be the very least it'll end up with.

IMDB:

8.0/10 with 946 votes. Quite a consistent score.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0416320/

Closer is at 7.4/10
Allen's past Oscar nominated movie (for Best Actor and Best Sup. Actress) Sweet and Lowdown is at 7.3/10.

I agree this movie could be the unknown factor in this years awards. unfortunately, I get the feel if it goes through, Good Night and Good Luck won't. But its really building momentum, and I already think its going to be Allen's biggest theatre release in history. (not counting inflation). We'll have to wait and see about this one.

Another rotten review...

83% Fresh at RT with 18 reviews: 15 fresh and 3 rotten. Average Rating: 7.5/10

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/10005366-match_point/

At IMDB it stands at 7.9/10 with 996 votes.

Now this movie certainly needs to be mentioned by the NBR to get its chances boosted.

Just read Peter Travers' review. It's glowing.

As of now, I think I will consider this even more than Geisha. The Screenplay nom is a lock.

I would love to see a Woody flick back in play.

I'm cautiously pessimistic about its chances however.

BO, despite what dolce would say, is a huge, huge question mark. Scarlett and Rhys-Meyers are not draws, and Woody himself may indeed be a NEGATIVE factor, depressing as that is.

As much as I like the ad campaign, the release strikes me as hopelessly botched. I fear its going to be steamrolled by all the competition. Furthermore, a small movie like this needs critics awards to have any shot, and I think movies like BROKEBACK, CAPOTE or GNAGL are going to be taking most of those home.

Long story short, I'm not holding my breath for Match Point to be a major contender outside of screenplay and, maybe, suppporting actress. But Scarlett's been ignored before.

But you know, in both markets it has been released so far (France and Spain), it is breaking records for Allen films. It just overtook Annie Hall in France and after this weekend will probably be one of the five biggest Allen movies ever in France and in Spain it is having some of the best legs this entire year.

Yes, but France and Spain have continued to turn out, even if not in record numbers, for Allen's films. Stuff like Melinda and Melinda.

Americans haven't really come out to see an Allen flick since Hannah and Her Sisters. 1986. I believe only Small Time Crooks, for whatever reason, has crossed 20 million in that time.

Match Point's well-recieved cousin, CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS, couldn't top 10 million.

Okay, so let's see what it got so far:

A mentioning in NBR's Top 10 of the year.

Golden Globes nominations for Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress and Best Picture Drama.

It is now close to a lock for Best Screenplay and Best Director noms at the Oscars. Why?

Because every single time Woody Allen has been nominated for Best Director at the GG's, he got a nom at the Oscars as well. Same for his screenplays. GG's don't love him as much as AMPAS as he got six screenplay and three directing noms there as opposed to 13 Screenplay noms and 6 directing noms at the Oscars.

Johansson's chances are improving too.

Seems almost like this year's Vera Drake.

Hmmmm maybe.

It got what it needed certainly.

But in the same breath, I think Cronenberg is just as strong as a competitor, so I wouldn't call Allen a lock for Director.

I do think it's screenplay chances are very good.

Cronenberg missing out on a GG nom, with Mereilles and Allen getting one hurt him a whole lot.

It reminds me of Mullholland Drive, but in that case Lynch got more noms for the movie at the GG's.
