Gigli

Quote:
Gigli is a 2003 romantic comedy film written and directed by Martin Brest and starring Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez, Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, and Lainie Kazan.

After a protracted battle between studio and director, a radically revised version of the original film was released. There was significant media attention and popular interest prior to its release, primarily because Affleck and Lopez, the film's stars, were romantically involved at the time. However, critical reception was extremely poor, and in the years since its release Gigli has frequently been cited as among the worst movies ever made.

The point of a movie discussion thread is to express opinions of a movie.
I think we all know what everyone's opinion is of this movie.

Ergo...

This thread is pointless.

Some people might like it.

To be honest, I think most people hate it because they think everyone else does. That's just my opinion. I haven't seen it.

I honestly don't think it's a bad movie. I actually own it. Affleck gave a pretty bland performance, but Lopez really made the movie. She is so underrated. While it's not a great movie, or even a really good one, it's one to watch on a rainy day. I loved the first hour and fifteen minutes but the rest just dragged.

7/10 (B-)

I wrote this awhile ago on Yahoo. Here is my review of it.

It could've been much worse

I will probably get slammed for saying this, but I personally do not think Gigli is a bad film. Is it a film without flaws? No. The acting at some points, is too over the top and well frankly, just horrible. But at some points of the film, the acting is actually top notch, and yes by Lopez and Affleck (However, it is Affleck who is the most over the top out of them all). So on the whole, is Gigli worth recommending? Well, even though my review here won't really persuade most of you, as you all have probably made your minds up already, but let me give it a shot.

The movie stars Ben Affleck as Larry Gigli (Rhymes with really) who is a contract killer hired to kidnap the mentally challenged brother of a district attorney. But what Gigli doesn't know is that the man who hired him, also hired another contract killer named Ricki (Lopez) to make sure that the job gets done. Gigli is immediatley attacted to Ricki but there is only one problem. Ricki is a lesbian. In any other movie, Ricki would've been straight, but this is one of the few clever aspects created by Brest's screenplay. Even though she is a lesbian the two characters still have some flirting (Somewhat) with one another, but the film doesn't get too sidetracked into a love story, and I think for this film especially, that is a good thing. That's really all of the plot that you need to know of. Everything else would be unnecessary to speak of in this review.

Here are the good things Gigli has going for it. The film does contain some decent acting, as I mentioned up above. However most of the time the acting is unbalanced. Affleck plays his character as a macho man at the beginning and then towards the end of the film, he oddly turns sincere. Justin Bartha (The man who played the mentally retarted brother) plays his character well most of the time, but then unexplicably at some points, he acts like his character is just a normal person. Out of the three main leads, Lopez is surprisingly the best. She isn't unbalanced. Her character herself might be a little bit unbalanced, but she plays it perfectly.

There is one scene in particular where the decent acting between Lopez and Affleck shine through. This is during a scene where there is a debate between Ricki and Larry, as to which is better and more useful, the penis or the vagina? This scene also contains the best dialouge by Brest in the movie. And in the end, which one do you think ended up being the winner? I'm not going to tell you. I have to give you at least one reason to see the film, and this might as well be it.

As for the plot, its a little bit of a stretch. But there is one odd thing that happens in the movie. Ricki and Larry end up having sex, even though Ricki is a lesbian. Why do they end up having sex? Well they have sex because Ricki finds Larry to be quite feminine. She comes to this conclusion, because of the way he sees him holding his fingers out in front of him, and says that by the way he held is fingers out, instead of in, was quite feminine. What the hell does that mean exactly?

I have come up with a theory though. This is the second movie in which Ben Affleck's character has had sex with a lesbian. If you have seen Chasing Amy, do you think Amy had sex with him because of the same reason Ricki had in this movie, because he was feminine? Are Brest and Smith (Kevin Smith the director of Chasing Amy) trying to tell Affleck something?

Finally, I think the people to blame about this movie is the people over at Columbia. You see, Gigli could've easily have been made for just about $10 million dollars. Instead, they devoted $60 million dollars into this movie. We all know how that turned out. Just to get the point across even more, the movie made just over $6 million at the box office. Yes, if the movie were made for $10 million, it still would've been considered a small failure, but at least they could've made up the numbers with the DVD sales. Instead, they have no chance of making up the loss.

So, all in all, do I suggest you run out immediately and buy Gigli? Well no. Is it worth a look on cable? Yes, I think it actually is. This movie has been given the title of the worst movie ever made. I do not find that to be true at all. In fact I would give the title of that to Glitter. The film though isn't exactly that good either. If you decide to see this movie, watch at your own risk.

You shouldn't be slammed, jmart. First of all, it's your own opinion. I have not seen it, and I never really wanted to. However, I am willing to bet that most of the people that say it looks bad or says its horrible is because of the insanely bad buzz this movie had.

I can see why some people wouldn't like it but to bash it like this isn't fair. I liked it and would watch it again. B

Is Gigli a bad movie? Yes. Is Gigli razzie worthy? Probably. Is Gigli the absolute worst thing in cinema? Absolutely not. It's a bad movie, yes. I didn't enjoy it at all. It's actually a pretty pointless movie. But, jesus, there have been so many worse movies. This doesn't even come close to the bottom of the list. I think it's one of the most over-hyped movies ever. People say "it's the worst movie ever" to follow the trend, probably. It's not close. Don't get me wrong; I'm not defending Gigli. It is bad. But as I went into Gigli, expecting something "F" worthy, I got a movie that actually made me laugh in a few scenes. The rest of the movie is pretty bad. The acting is terrible. The story is stupid. The only really appealing thing about Gigli is J'Lo, who was very hot in this movie. Overall, it was bad, but it could have been worse. MUCH worse.

I watched it on Digital Cable last night.

I actually liked it.

Great performances from Jlo and Ben. And I think people hated it cause it the IT thing to do.

Not the worst movie ever, but right up there. Gigli was a series of aimless scenes tied together with lesbians.

I still can't believe almost everybody hates this flick. I think most of them haven't even seen it.

I have, and theres a lengthy review at my website to prove it
I dont listen to critics ; but the bad buzz on this one was tough to ignore. Even so i felt Gigli was starting out pretty damn well.
Then the actual movie began
Which made me bleed inside.

I know a good amount of regular movie watchers that didn't mind the movie at all.

It's unfairly bashed, IMO. It's not a bad movie. And certainly not to the extent its reputation would have you believe. I can't help but feel if this hadn't starred an "IT" couple and was instead some no-name actors that reviews may have even been decent. I think people were automatically out to get it.

Anyway, I dug it. I'd give it a 6/10 (B-). I did buy it but never did watch the movie more than once. I would though. If I still have my copy somewhere I might just do that.

This movie was a victim of idiots being harsh on a movie that flopped. I suspect half of the naysayers haven't even seen it. To prove my point, in this thread, he who shouts loudest [doesn't actually mention anything about the movie].

I've not seen it, but I liked Jersey Girl. I'll give this a try when possible.

It got a D- Cinemascore. I was curious about that recently since it still has the record for the biggest 2nd weekend pta box office drop (among wide films).

It wasn't that unfairly maligned I don't think. A lot of the content left me shaking my head. I think there was a mild perception that it made fun of the mentally challenged, or at least was somehow inappropriate in its depiction. Also people laughed at how horrible the title was and how ridiculous the concept and characters were. So there was an element of people being prepared to ridicule it before seeing it, but some of that is justified.

This is really not bad at all, it's a bit of a misfire still, but I think the dialogue is pretty good and Affleck and Lopez are quite likable in it too. The films strength really is its comedic tone and its the romance angle and the run time what just bogs it down. There's a good small part of Pacino in it too and I actually thought Bartha acted well as the retard, but the fact there was a retard character in this at all feels like a miss. The film wants to do too much, but it has a fun script underneath in my opinion and it comes out at times.
