No Walk the Line. And continuous absence of Match Point and The New World.
Munich may not win Oscar, but its nomination is secured with all the mentions it's getting.
With a mention here, it indicates Crash is a stronger contender than Cinderella Man.

WOW for Kong. WOW for Squid and the Whale and WOW FOR 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN!!!!
More of nothing for Match Point and The New World.
A History of Violence is going to go out in a very respectable position this year, and that's all I can ask for at this point.

My rankings in term of nomination likelihood:
1. Brokeback Mountain
2. Munich
3. King Kong
4. Walk the Line
5. Good Night, And Good Luck
6. Crash
7. Capote
and big gap after that.

No Walk the Line, no Cinderella Man.I thought both would make AFIs top ten. Capote and King Kong are coming on strong.
Congratulations to 24 on making AFI top ten television list.

I still don't think Syriana is out of the race, especially if Munich falters.

Syriana was an overblown mess. It doesn't stand a chance at a major award. Quote me on it. Reception is tedious at best based on user reviews, a less than outstanding imdb score, etc. I'm not saying the movie is bad or even mediocre... just not quite good enough.
Walk the Line is still shaky, even if it yet again misses out for Picture. Since things like Squid won't be accepted by the Academy, you've got a shot for the biopic....
Otherwise an interesting, solid line up. While I had mixed feelings on Virgin, it's nice to see an institute honor a comedy once and a while.
Edit - Syriana's score has gone up a little since I last spotted it below 7. Still, I'm very confident it won't be in consideration for a BP nomination.

Syriana is too scattered brain, it needed someone like Soderbergh at the helm. Syriana would have made an incredible miniseries.

Didn't Soderbergh have his hand in as a producer?
But yea, I generally agree that the film wasn't tight enough to be up there with the major contenders.

It wouldn't be the first time a scatterbrained film was nominated, but seriously, I had no problems following the story. I think the academy likes those kinds of challenges before it makes them feel smart when they get movies that the masses don't.

Obviously there's The Producers, The Squid & The Whale (Comedy/Drama on IMDB) and I suppose Walk The Line if that's "musical-enough" ala Ray (haven't seen WTL), but The 40 Year-Old Virgin is in with a strong chance at a Globes nomination for Comedy/Musical isn't it? Everything else on most Top 10 lists etc. tends to be on the "Drama" side. Or am I overlooking something?

Do you realize how much yahoo reviews and IMDB scores mean in the Oscar race?
I definitely think Clooney will be nominated and will be the frontrunner to win.

Mav, we all like challenging material. Syriana just isn't a great film The masses will get it, but they won't like it. The message seems crystal clear to me, and I *like* the message... just not the execution. It's above average material, but mediocre film making. I'll leave with that.

Amos, movies like Casanova, Pride & Prejudice, Wallace & Gromit, hell even RENT are before VIRGIN at the Globes.

You're projecting your feelings on the academy. Take one guess if it works that way. Project your feelings on the AFI really quick for everybody and lets all watch and see if Syriana's name disappears from the list.

The way Munich is getting the top 10 mentions left and right, its nomination is more secured than Walk the Line.

Other than Gromit, Virgin does have stronger reviews than all of those.
And an AFI top 10.
Hmmm.

What list? The contendors? Hell no it won't, so long as you're the one writing it
If there were 6,7,8+ Oscar slots for BP, maybe I'd agree. Competition is just too fierce. I think the rest of the members are in agreement that Syriana's chances are very slim at this point. With your very strong contenders and even films like AHOV that were better received out there, why consider Syriana so strong?
The AFI list does not equal the Academy's list, an way. But I bet you'd like to argue that 40 Year Old Virgin stands a great shot at Oscar, since its on that list. Right?

The AFI list. Tell us all how bad and undeserving Syriana is, and we'll see if the AFI remove it from their list because of that.

I would agree that I do not think Syriana has much of a chance. For topical ensemble films, I now think that Crash has a lot more going for it.
It would be in a top 10 of contendors though.

Dude, I gave Syriana a B-. Hmm, since 5 of those 10 movies won't make it to Oscar night, I have no problem discounting Syriana. I'm fine with it staying on the AFI list. It is what it is, but it ultimately means diddley squat and you know it.

Yes but, as we both know, reviews are not the sole criteria. If they were, we'd be talking about Squid and The Whale versus Wallace and Gromit, or some other similar goofy pair, for Best Picture.
And we're talking about the Globes here. It all depends on how thoroughly they've een schmoozed. I don't think Universal has been out pimping VIRGIN enough, but I could be wrong.
Wedding Crashers would be the goofy comedy to get in before VIRGIN, I think. Money, money, money.
AFI list really doesn't mean crap anyway.
