Both versions of Sabrina are rot. I also don't really like Audrey except for in Charade and Breakfast at Tiffany. I find her characters to be blank. I should probably try giving Kubrick another go soon, as I actually thought Dr. Strangelove was good, unlike his other movies I've seen. Paths of Glory isn't one of them, but I have seen Full Metal Jacket.

Paths of Glory is to Full Metal Jacket as Some Like It Hot is to Sabrina.
Check it out.

Errrrr no way.
Paths of Glory is fantastic as is Full metal Jacket.
Sabrina is tolerable but Some Like it Hot is painfully awful!

hm, Paths of Glory, eh? how 'war' a war movie is that? I suppose I should check it out (only 87 min, at least)...but i've never been a much of a fan of war.

Paths of Glory > Bridge of The River Kwai
While I loves me some David Lean, Paths of Glory is special....

Alec Guiness trumps your Kirk Douglas!
They were both released in 1957!
And Bridge has William Holden's chest.
Paths of Glory is special. I just don't think it is quite matured Kubrick.

Bridge on the River Kwai is a classic, no doubt. And unlike Paths of Glory it works on the level of adventure story. And Alec Guiness trumps Kirk Douglas, 'tis tue.
But it doesn't evoke the sense of anger, futility and injustice that seeps from every pore of Paths of Glory. PoG is just a more moving, thought-provoking picture, IMO.
Plus, its got the underdog thing going for it. It never quite gets the credit it deserves.

yep. (well, i had to mute it for about forty seconds on the fone, but yknow).
I dunno. I can understand why it is considered classic, for sure, and I was actually rather impressed with the dinos/creatures...but i kinda found it to be a little too...uh...whats the word?
yknow the part where theyre on the boat shooting at the dino or whatever it was (i dont believe it was kong at that time - this is my memory, not a fault of the film)...anyway, there is a bunch of guys standing on this boat shooting at this dino, and that kinda characterized the whole film fro me...just the way they stood, they way they shot, the way they acted. just felt off, chaotic, messy and easy. and theres only so many times i can watch kong eat/fight/wreck some dangerous creature/dinosaur before it gets a little trying...i cant imagine how it wouldve been with the spider scene in.
all that aside, it was definitely entertaining, especially for its time (considering how suck most monster films of the twenties/30s were (ok, so mostly just frankenstein but yknow))...
so yeah, enjoyed it, but not sure how much i 'liked' it.

Great films in the days before and during Christmas:
Thursday, December 22
6:00pm To Be Or Not To Be (Not Christmas, but there's snow. And Nazis. It's another Ernst Lubitsch masterpiece.)
Saturday, December 24
2:00pm Mr. Deeds Goes To Town
8:00pm The Shop Around The Corner (Lubitsch, again)
Midnight Meet Me In St. Louis (Perfect holiday cheese)
Monday, December 26
From 6:45am to 8pm, just a series of great, classic movies:
The Thin Man Goes Home (Fairly weak entry in the series, but if you've never seen Nick and Nora before...)
The Third Man
Sunset Boulevard
The Philadelphia Story
It Happened One Night
Casablanca
King Kong

I won't let this thread fall back into the depths of message board history. Kypade's idea was far too noble for that fate.
Tonight (Dec. 27), some more "see the originals" including:
9:30pm Wings of Desire- Later remade into City of Angels. But, you know, good. Really good. But also every bit as depressing as its American remake. Just for different reasons.
Midnight Alfie- I love Alfie. I also love the remake.
2:00am Pride & Prejudice- I have not seen this. Hopefully, I WILL see this.
Tomorrow (Dec. 28), three excellent John Wayne westerns:
1:45 Red River 4:00 Fort Apache 6:15 She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
Thursday, (Dec. 29) A GOOD DAY
6:00am The Asphalt Jungle (John Huston's brilliant Noir).
And then, at 10am TCM launches into some kind of Kubrick marathon:
THE KILLING LOLITA 2001:A SPACE ODYSSEY DR. STRANGELOVE PATHS OF GLORY
At 8pm, GUNS OF NAVARONE. An excellent action picture.

Hope you guys got to see Sunset Boulevard and It Happened One Night. Especially Boulevard...one of my favorites.
Odd, I really didn't find Wings of Desire very depressing. I thought it was very poetic, and quiet..Wnders best work (Next come Until the End of the World and Buana Vista Social Club), but I was actually quite comforted by Damiel and Marion's sort of knowledge of eachother.

I actually recorded a bunch of those, and will get around to them...soon enough. :O
But, I did watch Wings of Desire, and I definitely didn't find it depressing either. Certainly poetic, as you/dolce say(s) (actually the first word that popped into my head - and i'm pretty sure that was entirely intentional)....and i guess, if not for the ending it would have been kinda bleak and not too "happy"...but yeah, I thought it ended on a rather high note. (to be continued, though? is that "just a saying", or something metaphorical, or is there really a sequel/continuation? or did i miss something?)
Though I'm not sure how rewatchable i'd find it...probably for the way it was made, it was almost a chore to get through...not because it was bad or boring, I dunno, like I said, I think it was just the whole structure/production of the thing....very draining.
anyway, the reason i dug this up is because I just got TCMs newsletter, and while I havent gone through the whole site to see what's in store for January, this caught my eye:
Quote: Hayao Miyazaki - Thursdays in January Our 9-film salute to the world renowned Japanese animator includes Spirited Away (2002), Princess Mononoke (1997), and Porco Rosso (1992).
Every Thursday starting at about 8PM it looks like...great chance to catch some of these amazing films:
Spirited Away - Thursday, January 5,2006 8:00 PM
Princess Mononoke - Thursday, January 5,2006 10:15 PM
Nausicaa of the Valley - Thursday, January 12,2006 8:00 PM
Castle in the Sky - Thursday, January 12,2006 10:00 PM
My Neighbor Totoro - Thursday, January 19,2006 8:00 PM
Porco Rosso - Thursday, January 19,2006 9:30 PM
Whisper of the Heart - Thursday, January 19,2006 11:15 PM
Only Yesterday - Thursday, January 26,2006 8:00 PM
Pom Poko - Thursday, January 26,2006 10:15 PM
( bold=i havent seen....the rest range from fantastic to much better. :o)
Especially nice because Totoro and Whisper of the Heart (which, I've been looking for for 6 months) aren;t out on DVD til March.
They mention some are gonna be dubbed, but, meh.
Anyway, I'll go through the site and see what else is playing sometime this week when I get back home.

Spirited Away is playing, but it's dubbed. Still fantastic, though, first time I watched it since...the first time I watched it...love it.

I was really surprised to find Mononoke playing while channel surfing... Heh. I'll try to catch all of the non-Miyazaki films as I have all of his work on DVD. (except for Totoro... and Howl of course.) And I'll probably watch Totoro too, if its the Fanning dub.

February 1 - March 3, 2006
31 Days of Oscar
TCM is gonna be playing 360 films, all nominated for an Acadamy Award. (I believe that's every film they play for the whole month). I haven't looked through the schedule, yet, but obviously there's gonna be a lot of great stuff playing.
The first page of the Now Playing magazine says the schedule runs like "360 Degrees of Seperation." That is, the first film they play will have an actor, director, writer (I assume dir and writers will be included too) in common with the second; the second with the third; and so on down the line of 360 movies. [from the mag] "...we move through this sequence: Ava Gardner, who starred in Mogambo (1953), also appeared in Show Boat (1951) with Kathryn Grayson, who appeared in Thousands Cheer (1943) with Donna Reed, who acted in [i]Babes on Broadway (1941), which also featured Anne Rooney."
so yeah, should be a great month leading up to the March 5th Awards.

Can I ask a question that upsets me. Why on Halloween do they ever show Halloween, they show 2-5, and 8, It kills me. Does it have to do with the rights?

You're talking about AMC, Thegun, not TCM. It's like comparing a succulent, perfectly cooked Filet Mignon to Crap.
The reason AMC won't show the first Halloween, I suspect, are twofold:
1. Rights issues
2. Halloween, unlike the sequels, is actually good, and AMC doesn't like programming good things.
Again, TCM= Best Network on TV
While AMC= Good excuse to stop paying for cable.
Ooh, 30 Days of Oscar! Always fun.
