Post THE INCREDIBLES International_____$37m for $105m in 5 Weeks
The Incredibles touches down in UK next weekend and what better way to start than 2 days worth of previews totalling a mamoth $6.5m.

http://www.screendaily.com/story.asp?storyid=20044

In the UK, two-day paid previews generated $6.5m. The picture launches there next weekend, as well as in a host of territories including Italy and Spain.

This is absolutely insane, even stronger than BJ2's $5.9m gross. More importantly, the total is greater than Shark Tale's $4.5m preview and is the first Pixar to have such a wide preview release.

Both Toy Story and Nemo only previewed at the Odeon to around $300k...this is no doubt a response to Dreamworks Animation and Harry Potter successful preview strategy.

The current record for a preview is held by HP3 which had 4 days of insane grosses totally $26m and HP2 $14m.......the closest match which is also the current animation champ, Shrek 2 totalled $10m from a more generic preview release pattern.

Heh, I created the exact same thread here a while ago, but who cares. Poland's numbers:

POLAND: WEEKEND 1

Ok, first, the bad news: It didn't even come close to Shrek 2. Probably didn't make as much as Shrek 2 did on its Saturday. Good news: virtually no other film has ever done anything close to what Shrek 2 has. This year, only The Passion comes close in terms of totals, and even that one was blown out of the water. Shrek 2's run in Poland is unbelievable! $13,259,696 is the final it had before dropping out of the top 12 (week 13), so it probably finished with $13.3-13.5M. Nemo, in comparison, finished with ~$4.9M. Shrek 2, btw, has made about as much as TDAT/Troy/HP3 combined, and those weren't small films

But enough of this Shrek 2 film!

The Incredibles did alright, not spectacular, but it's a very good number from a relatively small market, which does, however, seem to be a great one for animation. The best comparison I can find is Finding Nemo, which opened higher, and had a nice run throughout Nov/Dec. So the holidays should help The Incredibles somewhat. However, I don't see Christmas as being as lucrative as here in North America; ROTK for example was held off until January.

At this point, I'd say it will have a better run than Shark Tale, but fall short or match Nemo, so $3.5-4.5M is my current prediction for Poland.

Ok, now for some stats.

Conquering Europe simply 'Incredible'

'Incredible' Euro bow; 'Treasure' finds gold
http://www.variety.com/article/VR111791 ... =1278&cs=1

Incredible! PixarPixar/Disney's "The Incredibles" conquered Europe over the weekend, amassing an estimated $45.5 million, which marks a company record haul overseas for Buena Vista Intl.
Meanwhile, "National Treasure" found gold in Germany, Australia, Austria and the Philippines, "Alexander" saw a heroic debut in Taiwan and "The Polar Express" attracted a reasonable number of tykes in Germany, Mexico, Brazil and Japan.

Collectively, "Incredibles" outran the debuts of "Finding Nemo""Finding Nemo" in 12 markets by 16%, smashing toontoon records in Italy and Greece, although it came in below the fish tale in France and Belgium.

Superheroes saga drummed up a projected $18.6 million in the U.K., including $6 million in sneaks, the industry's second biggest animated debut behind "Shrek 2." Family pic drew an estimated $8.9 million in France (bringing the local cume to $9.6 million including its two week platform at the Grand Rex in Paris); $5.8 million in Italy; $5.5 million in Spain (trailing "Shrek 2"); $1.3 million in Belgium and $525,000 in Greece. Its cume rocketed to $60 million.

-----------

Well, the numbers speak for themselves, UK's gross is simply staggering, Potter Territory there.

The Incredibles's $18.6m weekend gross counts as the 2nd largest of All-Time without previews behind Shrek 2. With Christmas still ahead and Polar Express unlikely to do any damage, i wouldn't be too surprised if this ends up outperforming Shrek 2 to claim the #1 spot of 2004. $100m is definately not out of reach now methinks.....

1) Harry Potter 3: POA - $43,749,885 (£23,882,688/ €34,629,898 7-Day* or $17,478,583/ £9,346,002/ €13,787,106 3-Day - 535 TC)

3) Shrek 2 - $29,591,472 (£16,220,752/ €23,520,090 incl. $10,225,144 p/v or $19,366,328/ £10,673,350 3-Day - 512 TC)

How do you figure? The closest HP film to it is HP3, but that had massive previews; TI is ahead only including previews...

I'm not terribly happy with the UK number, not when Shrek 2 had $29m...

Taking away the previews, it outperformed ALL Harry Potter pics and is 2nd only to Shrek 2......i don't see how that can be dissapointing......it cleared $20m with ease.....

There's only a $5m gap between Incredibles and Shrek 2, something which can easily be made with Christmas......Shrek 2 didn't eactly have super good legs......

The $18.6m figure includes previews, right? It says:Superheroes saga drummed up a projected $18.6 million in the U.K., including $6 million in sneak

So its wknd gross is ~$12.6M.

EIther way, it'll still make $70-90m, maybe $95m.

Ok, that brought me done to earth......i was so excited at the potential of a super gross...... :D .........thanks for the correction.....

That does change things a lot.........back down to #9 including previews.....moving it behind Bridget Jones 2.

Without p/v it did $12.1m (p/v = $6.5m).....moving it out of the Top 10 and behind Spiderman 2.

Oh, a lot dont care. Only SW and LOTR have a large enough fanbase where you can claim that only few others aside from you (if you dislike either) dont care.

You are not alone, i'm not exactly anticipating this.....or any other CGI pic of recent for that matter.......

I'd rather see Phantom or Blade Trinity over this come Boxing Day.....

I don't know, I've watched the trailers. I guess very few films call me out where I must go to the cinema and see them and this is not one of them! I wish that weren't the case!

I'm glad you lot like it though! It is interesting to see others excitement and comments over the films that command them! :)

I just checked that Shrek 2's 3-day was $19,366,863, no wonder the $29m seemed so extraordinarily high.

Bad legs though; a multiplier of 3x, compared to Nemo's 5 or so.

Nemo had an awesome run until MatRev came along; it had a 51% that weekend. It dropped 62% when Brother Bear opened a few weeks afterwards.

P.s., My favourite among those big grossers: FOTR and TTT. A beauty of a run for both.

Right now, Phantom is my only anticipation for the entire year, and before you brought forth word of it Arch, there was nothing at all this year that I remember or that sticks out for me!

I'll still watch Alexander despite the dreadful WOM when it comes here and I'll leave Blade III for DVD rental.

The problem is that we are being swamped by the CGI films.

DW wants to produce at least 2 a year; they've promised investors that that's what they want.

In addition, Disney struck a deal with some UK company to produce cheap CGIs for them. The first, Valiant, is coming out this spring, and it looks baddd (it's about a group of pigeons during WW2...ya, I know).

If that's not enough, you have:

1) Disney making their own CGIs in addition (Chicken Little, etc.)

2) Fox doing it too (Robots)

And others as well. There's one about frogs and aliens, and another that's a fairytale about lizard-like beings.

And all of that next year :?

Another Correction: Shrek 2 still has the weekend record because both Matrix: Reloaded and TTT's gross are both 5-Day.

Take away Harry Potter 3's ridiculous p/v gross, Shrek 2 is the outright opening champ....it grossed extremely well even after those preview days........

However, as you said, that cost it big time with harsher drops compared to Pixar.....

And BTW - how could you not mention ROTK in UK BO office......the 2nd movie to gross $100m there and within 3 weeks it hauled in both Harry Potter 3 and Shrek 2......

It's not a bad December actually, it's just that the absence of LOTR does hit us fans quite hard......

I really want to see both Ocean's 12 and Lemony Snickets as well......but like you, Phantom remains my #1 preference by quite a long margin.

I can't wait to see the first BOMB from CGI, i honeslt don't think most of them deserve their gross......heavy emphasis for Shark Tale. :x

And if all goes to plan, Pixar might have there first stinker with Cars, the trailer is atrocious and i can't wait to see it being crushed by Harry Potter 4 or something else......

In fact, the only thing that looks remotely watchable is Robots...

Because I knew ROTK would do amazingly well. With FOTR, I had never seen a film like that doing so well so consistently. So ok, Titanic was a huge accident that had huge numbers everywhere, and HP1 was as British as it gets (and the Brits love British films- check Bridget Jones). But FOTR was just amazing.

Also, FOTR did beat ROTK in Pounds. Shrek 2 is only close to the LOTR films because of exchange rates and the falling dollar

Heh, seeing how things turned out this year, the top 10 next year will all be CGI...

You're right, Cars looks awful, awful, awful. I'm still giving Pixar the benefit of the doubt, and plus, Paul Newman is in the film, but Potter will rule that November.

I epxect Nov 2005 to fall short of this year's, simply because there is no NT or SpongeBob I can find anywhere. I think Dec. 2005, however, will pull 2005 ahead.

The one I'm most excited about is the SW3-WOTW period, though I'm not sure if WOTW will have everything together by ID2005. It would be smarter for them to move to Signs' opening; that way, you've got all of August and September.

[size=11]1 TITANIC £69,025,646
2 HARRY POTTER PHILOSOPHER'S STO £66,096,060
3 LORD OF THE RINGS: FELLOWSHIP £63,009,288
4 LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN KING £60,880,923
5 LORD OF THE RINGS: TWO TOWERS £57,600,094
6 HARRY POTTER CHAMBER SECRETS £54,780,731
7 THE FULL MONTY £52,232,058
8 STAR WARS EP.1: PHANTOM MENACE £51,063,811
9 SHREK 2 £48,104,138
10 JURASSIC PARK £47,886,423

Well, it's quite obvious that the exchange rate is in play at the momment.....without it, Spiderman 2 would've come nowhere near the original......

I was biting my nails when ROTK opened, like so many other fans :D , to gross 60m pounds is no easy feet, and to get back from TTT's 57m is an achievement in itself. At one point, all things were pointing to a 65m pound finish and a US gross near Titanic at around $120m.......but i think it was pulled out too quickly and didn't really receive any substantial boost to cash in on the Oscars......

In terms of legs, the best performer is not HP, LOTR or even Titanic.......that title belongs to The Full Monty which holds the record for the most weeks above $1m......i think it did something like 20 weeks above $1m.....

I wonder if Narnia can make any impression on the Top 7....

Well, Narnia seems to have a huge following as well, practically everywhere, right?

So it's very much possible.

Amazing how close HP1 came to Titanic. And it was such a mediocre film; it's like an appendix to the books. LOTR on film was almost a seperate world...

I'm not sure what could dethrone Titanic in Britain. In France, I wouldn't be shocked it if were either a French film, or Nemo's sequel

Maybe a CGI about a doomed romance on a doomed shipliner, with male strippers and a boy wizard, and Orlando Bloom as the male lead searching for some ring along with Keira Knightley.
