Hmmm, no Best Picture nom for Crash and only two noms for it overall. Not a good sign, is it?

Five noms for Capote and The Squid and the Whale each and four noms for Brokeback Mountain. However, no Best SUpporting nom for Gyllenhaal, hmm.

That's what I was thinking as well.

More good exposure for Brokeback since the movie is not out yet.

General thoughts:

1. Crash didn't do well. No directing or screenplay and only Best First Feature;
2. Interesting that The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada got 3 noms without Tommy Lee Jones, but Best Actor category is tough;
3. Beating out other competitors in the tough category really helps Terrence Howard in Best Actor race;
4. No screenplay, supporting actor, or cinematography for Brokeback Mountain;
5. Great for The Squid and the Whale and should help its screenplay chance at Oscar;
6. GNAGL getting both BP and BD is a good sign.

This is definitely where Grizzly Man would win, as a big screw-you to the Academy.

I would also add that it's preztty interesting that Capote, despite five nods, didn't get a Best Director nom.

Not so hot for "Crash". But It doesn´t look like the kind of film afi would go for anyway...

No screenplay for "Brokeback" and "Good night, and good luck". Strange. But "The war within" and "Nine lives" have zero chances at the oscars...

No Jake Gyllenhaal could be cause they considered him to be lead, not supporting. And lead is really crowded. It also may be possible that they didn´t like him or they thought one Gyllenhaal in the nominations was enough :tongue:

Also Transamerica is able to get two more noms in addition to Best Actress, so the movie itself looks to be much better received than I originally heard, then Felicity Huffman is definitely a lock now for an oscar nomination.

I'm surprised by the complete lack of Broken Flowers.

I figure Brokeback and Squid will fight it out. And BM will win.

I think she is. It´s the one performance that´s really different and showy, playing a transexual.

It did get Best Suppporting Actor (which I thought was the best performance in the movie anyway)

Michelle Williams should feel pretty good about a supporting actress nod, while Keener is definitely out of the race. It also boosted Amy's chance, but may not be enough to get in the top 5.

BTW, does anybody know what films in Oscar contention are not eligible due to budget requirement? I know A History of Violence's budget is definitely over $20M. What about The Upside of Anger? For some films that were in contention for only one or two categories, I'm not sure if they are snubs or because they are ineligible.

I think Upside of Anger's budget was around $12-15m, so Allen was snubbed. Especially when you look at that category for Lead Actresses which seems pretty thin. Maybe ISA felt the film was too "mainstream". Doesn't the ISA often prefer to reward the smaller and quirkier films and lower profile actors even if budgets are comparable? It was also at the beginning of the year which leads to awards amnesia and probably explains why Crash received relatively little attention considering what a huge breakthru at the box office it had. Then again maybe success counted against it too since it doesn't "need" ISA's "help".

yep, that is exactly what I was trying to say before when I mentioned that "Crash" may not be exactly their cup of tea.

I am also wondering about Match Point's utter absence...

This looks really good for Good Night, and Good Luck becoming a heavier hitter.

Crash did seem to underperform, huh?

The Squid and the Whale was well represented.

Glad to see Amy Adams nominated, and I hope she wins, and I hope she's nominated for an Oscar. I think that only about 5 of us have seen Junebug, and I think we'd all recommend it highly.

Interesting noms!

Mixed reaction to Brokeback. No love for Crash. Three Burials got some attention, hoever without Lee Jones in either Acting or Directing.

I've always considered Amy Adams more "in" than "out" for the Oscar short-list. She si the sole reason the film was even mentioned anywhere across the nation after its second week of release!

Overall pretty decent.

Better than last year's choices. It will be worth watching this year.

Last year was made lame because Eternal Sunshine was found ineligible. Even though I really like Sideways.

I expect that Good Night and Good Luck and Brokeback Mountain will split Picture/Director. Or that Ledger will win actor or some funky combination of everything.

Cinematography love is good for Good Night.

Ah, no love for Crash. :cry:

Seem like decent nominations, and I didn't know TV movies were considered ( Lackawanna Blues is a TV movie, right?).

I'm sorry... but I'm kind of doing a little dance of joy that Crash was virtually forgotten. It did deserve the nominations it got though.

I don't know how 'independent' Woody Allen movies are considered these days.
