Nah, the tailies were planned, they dropped hints the entire time. Rose's story about how she knows Bernard is alive, Boone and the radio. They knew that this season was going to revolve around the hatch and the tailies.
Of the flashbacks this year, I think Ana's were the best. Mostly because there was a lot of information and mostly because her piece of the puzzle is a bit more shocking in my opinion.
I hope the African guy becomes a main cast member too. I really like him.
I do agree somewhat about Claire. They don't have to give away everything but her remembering a bit more would help at this point. She's kind of a non-character.
I suspect that now that Michael and the tailies are back at the camp, and the realization that The Others like to take children, Claire's story and her baby will become much more of a pressing issue.

[spoil]It's rumored that there will soon be a new subplot involving Charlie and the monster starting in episode 12. More specifically, Charlie is trying to figure out why he is the only person who can hear it, and why nobody else even remembers that the monster ever existed.[/spoil]
If this is the case, then that should answer your question.

That's an interesting twist, if that's the case.

I watched the priemere on DVD recently and played the ocmmentary, there were a couple of interesting things they say. One is that the actors who play Sayid and Sawyer don't like each other in real life. Also they had planned to do more along the Sayid-Kate line of a relationship but axed it.
More slightly spoilerish things they say below:
[spoil]At one point one of the commentators (producers I think) says something close to "at this point they are on the beach thinking they are still getting off the island soon". And another commentator says that even today on the show they still all think they are going to get off the island. It came across to me like he was saying they won't.
And there was a little anecdote about the backgammon scene early on with Walt and Locke. They said that they wrote the scene and showed it to Abrams and he said it's good but put "Hey Walt, want to know a secret" at the end and they did. And they say that led to a discussion about Locke with Abrams that became a new vision for the character and ended up creating "the biggest secret in the history of secrets" or something close to that.
Someone with the DVDs can correct the details if they want to, I had only rented it earlier in the week and am going by memory.[/spoil]

[spoil]Uh, yeah.. the wheelchair. I agree it was a huge secret. I wonder if that's what Locke did tell Walt though.[/spoil]

the monster spoiler seems like an interesting twist.
However, I don't think they'll focus on it too much this season. They said they're not gonna give awya the monster this season and that they were gonan deal with why the plane crashed!

I think it was much more than that.

It can't be more than that, because it was never really referenced again. The only time they showed that scene again was at the beginning of Walkabout. Didn't they say they were in the middle of writing episode 4 when Abrams told them to add in that line?

Yes. It was during the fight scene between Sawyer and Sayid and they said it helped that they didn't like each other in real life. The commentary is very recommended, it didn't feel like it was scripted, more like they were just talking off the top of their head, so some things slipped out.

I am mostly with Raffiki one this one (who'd have thought?). I think that Ana-Lucia's characters is one of the most interesting on the show as of now and while I hated her, I think that was how we were supposed to feel. Also, I found her backstory great and it delivered an explanation good enough to xplain her current behaviour.
I liked the re-union as well.
Overall it was one of the strongest episodes this season, either my favorite or my 2nd favorite.
By the way, my friends and I have a Lost-marathon tonight as we watch all episodes of the 2nd season that aired thus far. The first season just ended in Germany and my friends are impatient to see the 2nd season (which is likely to start here in April), we decided to go for this marathon. Cool, let us know what they make of it all.
My friends and I got to the 6th episode since they had to leave because of the bus schedule and I thought a good spot to cut it would be Shannon's death.
They actually seemed to like it more than I did, even though I appreciate the new season slightly more after rewatching the episodes. I suggest others who hate this season (here's looking at you, Loyal) to rewatch them again.
One friend of mine really loved the stuff, the other one loved the first two episodes and the 6th, but thought the others were rather lame. He thought Shannon's death was rather surprising, though.
Both of my friends hate Ana-Lucia to death and wish he'd be offed soon. Overall, they are throughly satisfied with the season and consider it at least on-par with the first.

The DVD isn't out here till December, I think. I will buy it, though.

Oh and in other news, my new list of my favorite Lost-characters:
1. Mister Eko
2. Locke
3. Sawyer
The first two are really close and you gotta admit the characters are similar. I give Eko the edge, though. He seems like the most reasonable person on the island.

He's not my favorite but I really admire the acting ability of the guy who plays Eko, in terms of his subtle use of expressions and pauses and things like that.

I think he has the sense of mystery about him that Locke had in the first season and that I think is either being underused now or is gone.
I still think Terry O'Quinn is the best actor there. But there is just something about Eko that makes me like him more. He manages to convey a lot with very little dialogue and I would argue that he is one of the kindest if not the kiondest person on the island.
Sawyer...hehe...he's just cool.
After rewatching the epoisodes I must say that the character of Hurley slightly annoys me.

1. Locke
2. Sawyer
3. Kate
4. Ana-Lucia
Those are my top characters now. I always had Sun in my top 3 and I'd still put her up there except for the fact that she really doesn't do much anymore! Oh what the hell....
5. Sun

Ahhh, those were the days. Technically, in "Lost time" it's only been about 2 or 3 days since Desmond left the hatch. Remember that this entire season has taken place in the space of 4 or 5 days. You're not telling me anything I don't already know. Hey guys, remember when Claire had a baby and then suffered from post tramatic amnesia. Ah, those were the days. I'm flashbacked out. The only thing I look forward to in backstories now is hope of an appearance by that gruff cop who was escorting Kate. He was amusing, I want to see him again.
I actually agree with you, here. Some flashbacks I don't mind, but doing more flashbacks on hurley and jack it just doesnt feel like they're actually adding anything, they're just there because the show has a formula, that is to have flashbacks.

I agree on Hurley. I don't think he needs more flashbacks. However, despite the many many flashbacks Jack had, there is still something missing: What happened to his wife?
I also don't think Michael needs more flashbacks. Probably neither do Sawyer and Charlie
Those who definitely need some more flashbacks are Kate, Claire and Locke.
And I can't wait for Eko's flashbacks.

Character spoilers... [spoil]I think I read that one of the writers said Michael's character might be gay and that it should surface this season[/spoil]

Hehe, hard to believe on the one hand...but then again, why not?
Nothing that speaks extremely against it.
That would make this show to be the one that is [spoil]against racism (see Bernard/Rose and many other anti-rascit-allusions) and for tolerance of homosexuals.[/spoil]
Well, why not.
Just seems a bit, uh, random to me, hehe.

I find it interesting that the show has at least three murderers as main characters now. Ana Lucia, Sawyer and Kate.

Probably more, actually.
And then people responsible for deaths of others in one way or another (Jack, Locke)
Also, I am sure it has been mentioned before, but it is interesting how they made the characters of Ana-Lucia and Jack similar.
One was a cop and the other a doctor in a hospital (i.e. both doing public services).
Ana-Lucia's mother was her captain while Jack's father was the chief surgeon at the hospital, I think.
Both are the leaders in their groups of survivors.
Both can be hot-headed and not so reasonable at times and also tend to cry more than most others.
Both seem to have had some kind of a tradegy in their pasts (I am sure that something of that kind will be uncovered in Jack's past)
There are also some parallels between Locke and Eko.

[spoil]I don't think they inferred that. Someone asked if there will be any gay characters on the show and their response was that they didn't want to have stereotypical gay people on the show. They used Michael as an example though. But I could believe it. After all, he did play that gay guy in Romeo + Juliet.[/spoil]
