I may pick it up. I'm waiting to hear the songs in the film before deciding.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, too.

As we gear up for the exciting opening weekend, I'd recommend reading through this thread to see how wrong the nay sayers already have been to this point, with one of them presenting some absolutely terrible arguments. It's got great entertainment value if you want to kill a bit of time on your Sunday.
Needless to say, I'm licking my chops.

Ok, for 2 straight weeks this film has been tracking at $26M+.
MAJOR THEATRE CHAIN
WALK THE LINE: 26 MILLION
REEL SOURCE
WALK THE LINE: 27 MILLION (+1)
I wanted to add one thing before this weekend about what will help this get over $100M, and I can't believe it did hit me until a bit ago. Just last year, there was $75 million grossing movie called Ray that won an Oscar for Jamie Foxx (nobody that was anywhere close to a star in the movie world) for playing a music and cultural icon.
Before that was out of the public collective memory, here comes another movie "like that", and it's getting all of this Oscar buzz and looks to surpass the success the Oscar love that Ray got. Walk the Line is going to be seen as "the next one", and I believe "Ray" is going to be a positive on Walk the Line's box office quite a bit.
I've already been over the Reese Witherspoon factor, that Ray didn't have going for it, And she's going to bring in many female fans who don't even know who Johnny Cash even is, let alone June Carter-Cash.
And then there is the better release date, in which the film will be able to count on a lot of business from Thanksgiving and adults that went to Harry Potter 4 the previous weekend. (and damn, it's still tracking that high? Wow!)
Then, of course, there is Johnny Cash's popularity, as outlined best on page 4 of this thread. Ray Charles just isn't as big.
I'm closing the club at midnight tonight. I figure that anybody who wants in either will know by then.

Interesting that Maverikk just compared Walk the Line to Ray when he posted this numerous times in this thread...:
Maverikk wrote: Dr. Lecter wrote: Ray opened to $20 million as well.
I do not see it opening that big, though. But even then, still no $100 million here. Ah...again with the Ray comparisons, as you completely shy away from the more accurate Coal Miner's Daughter comparison...
If Ray is not the good comparison, why are you using it?

Let me reword it, then. The only reason Ray should be brought in is in the context I just did, and that's how it will help it. If you want to reach, fine, and we'll talk about Coal Miner's Daughter and what that will mean to helping. It's got that one in it's coner, too. Thanks Zingy, I forgot to add that movie to my last post.

Here's the audio from Ebert and Roeper. Roeper says the concert scene is one of the best ever put on screen. They are raving!

Deadline tonight, eh? Well, you failed to persuade me in the 50 days this thread has been open...
I'm still out.

That actually makes me feel pretty good, going by which side of the fence you've been on lately.

Haha, it's true.
It's still going to make more than Zingy is saying, regardless.

I'm actually leaning more towards 95 million now. Somewhere around 100 million.
I go up and down!
Oh well, if it doesn't make 100 million, no skin off my back.
Now if Potter doesn't pass Azkaban's total THEN I will be mad.

Ummmm.
I have no stance. I kind of agree with Dolcevita's prediction... I do not in any way think this film can do below 60 million and I think it could *potentially* do as much as 150 million.
Leave me in the club. It's a hope. It depends a lot on reviews this week, but my mom even wants to see it so I know that it has a lot of appeal...
Hmmmm....
Although if it comes in at $95 million I still think you won all the arguments Mav.

To me this movie has a great shot at oscars, because it is getting great reviews, and is subtley liberal but in a mainstream way. Unlike Brokeback and Goodnight and Good Luck which are more blatant. WTL is more academy friendly.
But as to box office, lets face it this is a story about a drug addled, warble voiced singer whose main fans were criminals. Doesn't spell 100m to me. Unless it gets like 8 noms and gets a boost from that later which could happen. But when I make predictions I don't take into account awards boosts later, I'm talking only for it's normal uninfluenced run.

Yeah, but this isn't a normal uninfluenced run.
No movies are uninfluenced by holidays or Oscars at this point in the year. That's part of a strategy to make money.
I'll be honest and say that if this movie ends up on Friday with 50% at RT then I do not think it will make 100 million. Just the aggregate word of mouth will be taken into effect.
I expect this to be nominated at this point though, so I take that into consideration.
*shrug*

Oh and Witherspoon will win the award this year.
I give her a 90% shot. No other female performance can even touch what's been said about her performance in this.

It'd be nice to get 25 members. 1 hour and 20 minutes to go.
