This is easily one of the best films of the year, even though the plot is a little confusing. The comedy more than makes up for that though.
The thing I liked the most though is that it's different. I liked the idea of having the narrator being able to stop and control the reel of the film. That was well done.
Also how many movies do you see a character pee on a corpse by accidently. That's dark comedy at its best.
"And for the people in the midwest, sorry we said fuck so much".

How the Fuck did 13 critics not like this movie.
Will keep it simple. This was a GREAT movie that everyone should see. NO, EVERYONE MUST SEE THIS MOVIE. NO EXCUSES.
Some small comments.
- Val Kilmer was very good but Robert Downey Jr stole the show. As someone who has always liked him, he was GREAT in this.
The extra bonus of this movie was there were are about 10 Laugh Out Loud Scenes - I swear that I was laughing at so many scenes in this movie > Side splitting humor. Mostly Kilmer setting up Downey but Kilmer had some good ones also.
So it was basically an old fashion detective story modernized with lots of humor.
Also, the lead girl looked alot like the lead girl in Grey's Anatomy that for awhile I was wondering if it was her. She also does a little nudity, if anyone needs that to see this GREAT movie.
Looking up the above lead girl in this movie - wow, what a career so far - think this girl might be the it girl instead of Rachel McAdams.
WOW - LOOK AT THOSE LAST 6 FILMS

Yeah, Goldie, Michelle Monaghan is a name to watch, but she's not at McAdams' level. She was actually in Syriana, too, but her part was the subplot that test screenings didn't like so it was cut.

Yes, McAdams probably has gotten more name recognition and leading acting roles but considering how very high profile Michelle Monaghan's movies have been, I wonder what will happen if she gets one big co-star role to put her name out there. The next couple of years, should be interesting to watch both Michelle Monaghan and Rachel McAdams.

as most everyone agrees that this movie isn't a spoof > how should this movie be explained.
I think just as a tribute movie with lots of comedy thrown in.
After seeing it a second time, as there are so many small little things in this movie to catch, a second viewing was very enjoyable.

As far as I see everyone agrees that it is a parody (which I meant by "spoof" anyway). And it's not a straight-forward film noir as you have stated.

Well I'm going to directly counter Filmo and declare this a classic masterpiece The 34th or so "A" movie I've seen during my lifetime, and the second this year. Humour of a Kaufman script, spirit of a Tarantino crime flick, and it works as a clever parody in the way that it self-reflexively plays with cinematic conventions and the film's own construction. A cinephile's dream, and the best of 2005 by a long shot.

Yeah, a lot of fun. Wouldn't call it a masterpiece, but I am sure it is pretty rewatchable.

But not significantly less so than Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, Reservoir Dogs and The Usual Suspects etc. I honestly think this film will be spoken of in the same breath in a few years, I wouldn't say it's quite as good yet having only seen it once but its in the top echelon of entertaining films, and I know it's why I go to the movies - to be entertained. Comedies in particular traditionally don't get the appreciation they deserve when they're pulled off this well and I think the best of them deserve to be talked in as high regard as the best dramas which tend to get the glory.
Meh, it's all a matter of opinion. Guess it comes down to how it stands up over time but I'll stick my neck out and label it as a classic and leave it at that anyways

I think it's showing in Cincinnati, which is about 2 1/2 hours away if I speed a bit here and there.

Utterly fantastic film. The funniest and most entertaining film of the year, i can't praise it enough. So many scenes had me laughing out loud, and i can't remember the last film that made me do that more than once, let alone consistently 8-10 times. This is what cinema is all about, a gem of a film.

Yeah, definitely one of my favorites of the year. Insanely witty, it's like Charlie Kaufman and Quentin Tarantino were put in a blener with a big helping of witty performances, dialogue, and general Shane Black goodness. The third most enjoyable movie I've seen all year. A-

Without a doubt my favorite film all year. The production, writing, acting, story, and overall production were all top notch. The entire film noir aspect was done better then many films in this genre and certainly make this one of the most enjoyable movies all year.

What an incredible film! Everything about this film is enjoyable. Robert Downey Jr. is superb in his role, as are Michelle Monaghan and Val Kilmer. There are about five or six movies on my list this year that could end up being my favorite, and this is one of them.
Grade: A

I agree as I said earlier, Robert Downey was great in this movie and Val and MM were good but Downey stole the show.

I thought Robert Downey Jr. was good, but Val Kilmer really blew everyone away. Amazing comedic timing by him.

KISS KISS BANG BANG - 9/10 (A-)
One of the strongest films of 2005 and a major surprise! I LOVED it! It was hilarious and I laughed out loud tons of times. The acting was great as well, with Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer turning in excellent comedic performances. This movie never takes itself too seriously and that's what makes it work. It's a sharply written and stylish movie that sneaks up on you with its irresistible charm. One of the most fun films I've seen in a while. Highly recommended to just about everyone.
Here are some of my favorite quotes/one-liners from the movie:
Perry: Thanks for coming, please stay for the end credits, if you're wondering who the best boy is, it's somebody's nephew, um, don't forget to validate your parking, and to all you good people in the Midwest, sorry we said fuck so much.
Perry: He called her a....well, bad word.
Harry (Robert Downey Jr.): Still gay? Perry: No, knee-deep in pussy. I just love the name so much I can't get rid of it.
Harry: Do you think I'm stupid? Perry: I don't think you'd know where to put food at, if you didn't flap your mouth so much. Yes I think you're stupid.
Harmony (Michelle Monaghan): For starters, she's been fucked more times than she's had a hot meal. Harry: Yeah, I heard about that. It was neck-and-neck and she skipped lunch
Haha, great movie!
