C'mon folks, you Oscar buffs need to make some predictions! Sometimes these early predictions are actually more fun than the Oscars themselves. Don't make me PM some of you.

1. Patricia Clarkson, All the King's Men (always great in supporting roles)
2. Michelle Williams, Brokeback Mountain (the early buzz for the film is good; even if the academy doesn't go for it due to the subject matter, acting nods should be there)
3. Shirley Maclaine, In Her Shoes (making a comeback with several roles this year)
4. Gong Li, Memoirs of a Geisha (a juicier role than Michelle Yeoh's and a few more show-stealing scenes)
5. Meryl Streep, Prime (always a candidate every year)
Alternates:
6. Toni Collette, In Her Shoes
7. Uma Thurman, The Producers
8. Michelle Yeoh, Memoirs Geisha
9. Frances McDormand, Class Action or Aeon Flux
10. Dakota Fanning, War of the Worlds

I guess Shoreh is out of the question now...
For now..
- Gong Li, Memoirs of a Geisha
- Shirley MacLaine, In Her Shoes
- Susan Sarandon, Elizabethtown
- Michelle Williams, Brokeback Mountain
- Kate Winslet, All the Kings Men (lead? supporting? haven't seen the original to judge...if she's lead, then Patricia Clarkson should be in this spot..)

1. Shirley Maclaine, In her Shoes
2. Kate Winslet, All the Kings Men(if supporting)
3. Patricia Clarkson, All the Kings Men(yes I think they'll both get support noms, but thats pretty much all the movie will be nominated for. Will miss out on BP.)
4.Gong Li, Memoirs of a Geisha
5. Dakota Fanning, War of the Worlds
I think Fanning will get a surprising nom. Just by the fact by shes that young and gave a solid performance. She won't win but it'll be nice to see her in there. By the end of her career Fanning has a good chance of having multiple Oscars on her shelf.

Sandra Bullock - Crash
Renee Zellweger - Cinderella Man
Maria Bello - A History of Violence (if the movie does gain mroe buzz, she could ride off it, plus she was nominated for Cooler wasn't she?)
Toni Collette - In Her Shoes
Shirley MaClaine - In Her Shoes
Gong Li - Memoirs of a Geisha
Uma thurman - The Producers
Patricia Clarkson - All the King's Men or Good Night and Good Luck
Michelle Williams - Brokeback Mountain
Frances McDormand - North Country
Catherine Keener - Capote
Amy Adams - Junebug (she needs serious buzz right now, maybe a quick DVD release by Dec.)
Dakota Fanning - War of the Worlds and possibly Nine Lives can help her out
Oh and the Pocahontas girl
That seems to be the complete list of possible actresses that are pretty visible at this point.
Of course, as time goes on more breakouts will be gaining buzz.
at this point, my dream team would be...
Sandra Bullock - Crash
Renee Zelwegger - Cinderella Man
Patricia Clarkson - doesn't matter which film
Amy Adams - Junebug
Slot 5 still up for grabs

Maria Bello is another possibility as you mentiond, Raffiki. She wasn't nominated for The Cooler, but I think she did get a GG or SAG nom. Her missing out for that should help her this time around. I'm hearing something about her and a sex scene with a cheerleader outfit?!

James Berardinelli saw A History of Violence at the Toronto Film Festival and quite liked it, giving praise to Maria Bello ("firecracker", "draws the camera's attention", etc.).
Her performance may be remembered come Oscar time, especially due to some apparently rather interesting scenes she's involved (she also apparently is completely nude in one scene).

Catherine Keener- Capote
Scarlet Johansson- Match Point
Michelle Williams- Brokeback Mountain
Frances McDormand- North Country (I'm still not convinced the film will be all that good though)
Toni Collette- In Her shoes
Alterantes: Gong Li, Shirley McLaine, Patricia clarkson, Sandra Bullock.
Sandra Bullock is an interesting one, cause all of a sudden she seems bound to get a nomination eventually. If not this year next... Have You Heard (aka Every Word is True) is supposed to be much better than Capote (even though Capote is already supposed to be pretty good). But since Have You Heard doesn't come until next year now...
But if both films end up doing welll maybe it'll inspire Baz Luhrmann to finally do Alexander

David Poland's updated picks:
http://www.moviecitynews.com/columnists ... tress.html
Michelle Yeoh - Memoirs of a Geisha - She is the verbal power woman in the film... a great veteran actress gets her due
Uma Thurman - The Producers - Ulla is a star-making role and for an actress who is already a star, it's a near lock (unless the movie loxes)
Patricia Clarkson/Kate Winslet - All The King's Men - One of these two great actresses will step to the front when the movie is seen
Shirley MacLaine - In Her Shoes - It's not an Oscar movie, but as the category thins, she is someone who is welcome at the party
Maria Bello - A History Of Violence - A great, daring performance by an actress who can use The Cooler as a step into an Oscar nod
Sarah Jessica Parker - The Family Stone - The perfect step away from Sex & The City... if the movie does business, she could be the designated nominee
Toni Collette- In Her Shoes - It's really her story... but Cameron is the star
Ginnifer Goodwin - Walk The Line - She'll get there one of these days, but too much crying and not enough range here
Marie-Josée Croze - Munich - A shot in the dark
Idina Menzel - Rent - She is a really interesting actress who could be a suprise
Rachel McAdams - The Family Stone - The hotttest actress of 2005 could jump out in this ensemble.
Jessica Lange - Broken Flowers - Lovely performance, but the movie never caught
Emily Mortimer - Match Point - A long shot, but a well-liked actress

Honesty? I think this is the strongest category, right now. The most stand outs.

The supporting categories are always murky at this point, but this one seems to be getting worse. Think about it:
Mediocre reviews and BO for North Country and In Her Shoes have probably hurt Toni Collette, Shirley MacLaine, and Frances McDormand. They could still get in if upcoming performances are disappointing.
Patricia Clarkson and Kate Winslet are out of the running for All The King's Men since it's being pushed back.
Who's lead and who's supporting in The Family Stone? What about Rachel Weisz in The Constant Gardener? Q'Oriana Kilcher in The New World?
I'd say the only true contender at this point may be Maria Bello in A History Of Violence. And I wouldn't be surprised if Thandie Newton slips in for Crash. People are still talking about that movie.
My current predictions:
1. Maria Bello - A History Of Violence
2. Thandie Newton - Crash
3. Frances McDormand - North Country
4. Gong Li or Michelle Yeoh - Memoirs Of A Geisha (or maybe both)
5. Uma Thurman - The Producers
Alternate: Catherine Keener - Capote

Well, Uma could probably sneak in.
And if Reese Witherspoon is pushed supporting this catagory becomes negetory and useless.

Yep, I edited my post before I read this to replace Rachel Weisz with Uma.
Fox would be stupid to campaign Reese supporting.

Maybe Fanning isn't dead in the water. Its a longshot, but they could pull her up.

Yeah, I also forgot Michelle Williams in Brokeback Mt. Some reviews have stated she gives the film's best performance. Plus, how many ladies in the Academy can identify with learning their husband is having an affair with another guy?
