I've been impressed with North Country's campaign so far. It's most certainly a contender for Charlize, and *maybe* BP. It depends - this could be another Erin B (Certainly not a Veronica Guerin I hope), or something more. Here's hoping for more, as usual.

who are these chosen by if we can vote for the best picture???

Very good for Jarhead... finally getting onto a list.
Not sure about the Pheonix win... still notconvinced but surprised at Charlize Theron win: could she win again this year? I know everyone's now saying she's a real contender with North Country but it seems the only real competition she might have is Reese Witherspoon!!

I'm not feeling the Phoenix win either. I felt Hoffman had greater buzz out of Toronto. I'm surprised he didn't get this award.

I'm definitely feeling it for Phoenix. The academy is going to take into account that Phoenix learned to play the guitar and sing like Johnny Cash for the role, and I have a hard time believing that they'll not reward him for all that, when they rewarded Jamie Foxx for lipsynching Ray Charle's songs.

Or, because he gave a great performance.

Phoenix gave a great performance, that's for sure. But whether he gave one that's good enough to win the Oscar is another thing. I just feel there were a lot more "Hoffman is Oscar-worthy" notices than there was for Phoenix. There were complaints that Phoenix shouldn't have sung the songs himself as well. Add to the fact that Witherspoon steals the show, you have a not so certain winner.

In my opinion Heath Ledger is the #1 contender, though Phoenix is high at #2 for now. Reese is getting so much attention, it kind've draws away from Joaquin.

Best actor category is always tough to predict. This time last year, Liam Neeson and Javier Bardem were regarded as locks for nominations but missed out in the end. This year we could be looking at 7 or 8 strong contenders again.

The more I watch it, the more excited I get for the film's release. Great dialogue!

"I want you to take him from his hotel, drug him, put him in front of a car, and run a truck into him at 50 miles an hour." -- Robert Baer (Clooney)

*that wasn't sarcasm, he was meaning it :hahaha: *

"You wanna know what the business world thinks of you? We think a hundred years ago you were living out here in tents in the dessert, chopping eachother's heads off..." Bryan Woodman (Damon)

"...and that's exactly where you're gonna be in another hundred. So yes...on behalf of my firm, I accept your money" -- Bryan Woodman (Damon)

This film looks like it'll have a controversial edge to it, with all the hating of the towel heads that's going on. :2thumbsup:

This film has shot up to my #2 most anticipated. It sure does look promising from the trailer, and it's got a prime Oscar wide release scheduled. Clooney is gonna get his this year between both of his upcoming movies. The scene where the enemy catches him looks pretty brutal. With strong support from Matt Damon, Amanda Peet, heck, even William Hurt and Christopher Plummer are in it! Clooney could very well be on his way to a Best Actor Oscar nomination, and unless he truely sucks, I'd expect it. (I don't think he'll suck)

This could also score something for Matt Damon, and maybe even Amanda Peet if her role is good enough.

Nope!

Not in theaters, anyways. I'd rather watch A History of Violence this weekend (which I plan to - after I take the SATs on Saturday).

Ah, well, you'll enjoy A History of Violence a lot, I think.

We've decided this entire thread boils down to one thing, and one thing only. That Gong Li needs to get, and then win, the best supporting actress nom. If that happens I will cry puddles and then proceed to drink back the lost water in margaritas. Nothing else matters at this point...so no need to discuss. :-)

Amy Adams was tough in Junebug. I can't see another supporting actress being better than she was. :-k

Oh, I was going to, since it opens here, but I'm going to visit my parents and sister since i can't be with them for Yom Kippur next week? :-(

But I will try to watch it this upcoming week so that there's at least a review up for next weekend before it expands. Toughie though, I have midterms kicking in, and am a bit stressed for time. I usually provide something though, since after full time work and full time classes I usually at least take Friday evenings off to relax before homework on weekends. Only I have to go to an event that Friday. But it might be late event, so I'll squeeze it in the movie beofre if I can. Sorry about this weekend.

Gong Li won't be nominated, they'll push Yeoh.

Amy Adams is my heart's delight, but the film is too small = looked over.
