 MY DATE WITH DREW
Synopsis: "Ever since the second grade when he first saw her in E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL, Brian Herzlinger has had a crush on Drew Barrymore. Now, 20 years later he's decided to try to fulfill his lifelong dream by asking her for a date. There's one small problem: She's Drew Barrymore and he's, well, Brian Herzlinger, a poor twentysomething aspiring filmmaker from New Jersey. But that doesn't stop Brian and his film school pals from doing everything they can think of to convince Barrymore to go out with him - and documenting their quest along the way. Equipped with a video camera they have to return to Circuit City in 30 days and the $1,100 Brian won on a game show (where the winning answer was, prophetically, "Drew Barrymore"), they've one month to accomplish their mission. To succeed, they'll need to negotiate an army of publicists, agents, producers and assistants who surround the star so Brian can pop the question."
Creative Team/Cast: Brian Herzlinger, Jon Gunn, John Mann, and Lily Rains.
MPAA Rating: "PG," for mild thematic elements and language.
Feature Running Time: 90 minutes.
Release Date: August 5th, 2005 (Limited).
Distributed by: Slow Hand Releasing and DEJ Productions.
No offense to anyone involved in this film, but, my god, this is such a stupid idea. Who cares if this loser wants a date with a Hollywood starlet and since Drew isn't involved in the film, I guess he doesn't get his way. I'm sure this film has some amusing moments, but I just refuse to pay $8.50 to see this dude run around slobbering over Drew.
And its amusing to me Barrymore can now say however disappointing her date-night movie FEVER PITCH did, it at least grossed more than the film about the person who wanted to have a date-night with her.

Is Gunslinger really just Mike Jr.?
I would like to request that, whoever you are, if you would please stop flooding this sub-forum with these bot-like threads. I think we all know how to look up standard movie info on IMDb, etc. Also, FYI, all caps in the thread title is considered bad form.
On the other hand, I would be most happy to hear your opinion on any of these Foreign and Independent films that you actually get out to see...

Sorry about the caps. I didn't know.
And I figured I should give some information in the threads I post so people wouldn't have to go to IMDb and search for films.
Anywho, I'm sorry, I'll re-adjust next time I post one of these.

I should note that I am only an ordinary member of WOKJ forums, and this is only my personal (honest) opinion, but thanx for the response, and like I said I'm thrilled to hear everyone's opinions about the non-mainstream movies...

Saw the poster for this last week in the subway. Looks like the movie 20 Dates, which came out a few years ago where an ordinary guy went on twenty dates with the final one being a match up with his dream date Tia Carrere. It wasn't all that great, this looks to be even more painful since it no longer is an original premesis nor is it that low budget of a flick that it can get points for effort. Looks like a bad idea and an ego stroke for Drew. She's usually pretty down to earth, so i don't know why she would do a pre-scripted movie about a guy who wants to date her celebrity self?
What drew you to this movie, Gunslinger?
I have to admit I think Barrymore is fun, cute, and I always enjoy her even when her acting isn't particularly spanning a wide range, but this movie just looks like a very bad idea to me.

I personally am not too interested in this, but I am interested in seeing how it does. I believe its fascinating to see if a film can sell itself on the idea of a star even if it doesn't feature the star in an actual ro,e. I bet if this does well, there'll be other low budget films which also try and spawn concepts involving an A-lister that don't require said star actually appear in the film at all.
Though I'm suprised the director chose Drew, since she's been a rather mixed draw lately. Even if he did actually have a crush on her, he could've made a film where he pines for 90 minute about a bigger star. MY DATE WITH JULIA or MY DATE WITH NICOLE perhaps.

Nah, the bigger stars are less approachable. I think Nicole is beautiful, but I certainly wouldn't consider her approachable. Drew has The-Girl-Next-Door thing going for her which makes her a perfect match for a movie like this. Unfortunately, the movie is so predicatable its kind of sad. He'll pine for her...miss the perfect girl under his own nose, and finally realize what he's got.
Either that or Welcome Back Roxy Carmickael style...he'll prep for eternity and then have disheartneing no-show with a re-evaluation of his own life.
I can't really see it doing anything other than one of these two, especially when its about a guy hoping to win a date with a celebrity.

You know it actually sounds like it may be interesting. If Drew is not involved though, then I am assuming it is all a big letdown in the end?
Eh, it really depends on how it is handled as to whether or not is good. If he uses a good dose of self-depriciating humor then it could be a real treat. Other wise it could be 90 minutes of pining for attention that is as unbearable to watch as ... well I don't know a good comparison.

Ugh! Why are people such jerks on here? No offense but I don't get it. And I rarely visit this forum anymore because you hardly have to do anything to bother people and it's just bullshit. You get in trouble for making a couple of threads because it bumps down old ones that have been on the first page for at least a couple of weeks already . Everything is wrong. I know if someone posts a thread for a movie I haven't heard about that if they don't post some info in the thread I doubt I'm going to go looking for it because from the title alone I most likely won't be intrigued enough to care to look it up. It is convenient and nice for info to be posted about the movie the thread is about. Most other boards I've seen, like Joblo's Movie Emporium, have threads in the Current section posted the same way. You include info. If you don't it just looks like you're too lazy to make a proper thread and you shouldn't have even bothered posting it because you must not care enough about the movie if you didn't post any info and should have just left it for someone who actually does really want to see it to post.
I guess professional movie reviewers should not give a description of the plot in their reviews either because if people want to know what the movie is about they can just look it up .

Very well said Mike. Some people on here rock! Some others really piss me off, I could name some people but I'm not I think some of you really need to stop being bitchy and whiney when it comes to people making threads. It would be dumb if Gun just said the title and said what he thought about it, people would be thinking what it's about. If you don't like it, don't post in the fucking threads, it's that simple.

I just know this movie is going to do awful this weekend. It's a movie that has limited appeal and is in like 58 theaters. Can you say bomb? D.E.B.S. had more appeal than this. Of course I wouldn't exactly call it a bomb since it was cheap to make, but it will do bad. I bet it won't have more than a per-screen average of $1,500 and that would be if it's lucky. I say under $1,000 per-screen.

As G said, this looks a lot like that 20 Dates movie except with one person/celebrity instead of twenty different women.
I wonder if this guy is as insufferably annoying as the guy from that movie was.

Oh god yes Libs. I'm so happy someone else saw (and disliked) 20 Dates. This seems even more obsessive compulsive and painful. I hate to give credit to good romcoms. As a genre, quality ones are so few and far between that if I hold my breathe and pray...I'd most likely die.
