Kingdom of Heaven won't get nominated unless it's a masterpiece. I think it's being overestimated, simply because it's Ridley Scott. The New World has a better chance in my opinion with a great and extravagant director and Colin Farrell (who is infinitely better than Orlando Bloom). Then again, it reminds me of Alexander... :-k

I read somewhere the Cannes Selection Committee was underwhelmed by Brokeback Mt. Combine that with controversial subject matter and it may be this year's Kinsey. Maybe an acting nod, but not much else.

narnia can be flat out brilliant (which it probably will), but wont be nominated for a best picture oscar. the academy wont give the oscar to two fantasy movies in a row.

we can only hope tho... if the film is great, then ill root for it.

my picks:

Munich
Broken Flowers
Cinderella Man
A History of Violence
Memoirs of a Geisha

After reading various reactions to the first screening of Memoirs of a Geisha, I'd say it didn't knock itself out of the game to say the least. Audience applauded at the end. One post said Michelle Yeoh gave an oscar-worthy performance, and Ziyi's performance is also quite credible. To me, of all contenders, this film always had the biggest question mark and the most potential to flop spectacularly. Nobody knows how this whole thing of Hollywood telling Japanese culture with Chinese actresses speaking in English could work out. Now it seems that at least Rob Marshall and the film didn't fail. All agree it is beautifully shot. Some complained about the plot, but some compared it with The Last Emperor but less boring. It's still in the post-production, so as long as the general first impression is good, I'm happy.

I think it'll come down to Munich vs. Memoirs of a Geisha at the end.

Personally, I think it's impossible to predict so early in the year. No one would have predicted last year in August that Million Dollar Baby was a strong candidate, and then it just came out of nowhere and won everything.

But by August most people had at least 3 or 4 of the nominees in the top 10 canidates.

I do not know why we continually need to argue this on a site which has a LOT to do with Box Office Predictions. A lot of it is formula.

Indeed.

I mean a movie like The Aviator was a definite Oscar contender from the moment on the production on it has started.

I rhink this year, there is no way Munich and Memoirs of a Geisha won't get at least some major noms.

I'm not arguing, i'm just sharing a thought. I do agree with what you first said though, and I guess what I meant to say is that it's impossible to predict ALL of the candidates, as there will always be one or two "surprises".
