Dancer in the Dark. Just saw it the second time after 4 years. So powerful and simply amazing. Has both style and substance. More review on the review last movie thread.
Fargo, Usual Suspects, Memento, and Requiem for a Dream are also some of my favorites.
Throws some other movies out there:
Pulp Fiction
Dr. Strangelove
American History X
Boys Don't Cry
Sex, Lie, and Videotapes
Magnolia

Was Dr. Strangelove really an Indie? If so, yes. Of course. One of my favorites.
I don't think PF was an indie. Reservoir Dogs was, but I'm sure PF had some studio backing, esp. with that cast.
$5 to whoever seconds Spinal Tap or any of the Christopher Guest films.

IMDb had them listed under the top 50 indie category.

Match on Dr. Strangelove then, also, Magnolia, and I will second Best in Show. Ross, owes me a $5 beer.
Does no one want the pleasure of knowing they have the best taste ever by seconding Dead Man or Down by Law?
I'm also throwing in a recommendation for Caravaggio by Derek Jarman.

I couldn't get into The Straight Story. I appreciate that it's this ode to old America and whatnot, yadda yadda yadda.
But I just had a trouble caring about anything that happens to anybody in the whole piece.
Lynch makes films with intentionally distant people, so when he switches gears and tries to make things sentimental, it just comes across as simple and dull.
People like this film, I believe, because the simple "goodness" and "wholesomeness" of watching an old guy (who is dead now, Farnsworth, the actor comitted suicide due to illness before he was nominated for an Oscar for this) fart around on a tractor for two hours talking about the world war. It is something that didn't touch me on any level :?
Oh well.

Now you're required to tell me your location if you want that beer, fool!
I haven't seen Dead Man. I forget who the director was, but I do remember that he is the same guy who did Coffee and Cigarettes...Which I didn't see. Look at my idea in the Siskel/Ebert thread, and maybe Dead Man will be the movie of the week

Fubar totally deserves to be on that list. It's the funniest movie I've ever seen and it's an indie and it's a documentary!

I had already mentioned Dancer in the DArk, and xiayun just did so on this page again, so you can add it to the list

A little late to the party - but I have some ideas/suggestions:
Blue Velvet - Lynch's (admittedly disturbing) true masterpiece! (I'm a big Lynch fan and I will support any other titles people wish to nominate)
Rocky Horror Picture Show - say no more!
Bubble Boy - Don't scoff till you've seen it!
Harold and Maude - Must be on list!
Freaks - Tod Browning's 1932 ode to freakology!
Buckaroo Banzai - Still waiting for that promised sequel!
Rivers and Tides - Spellbinding "nature" documentary!
Leon (The Professional) - Bam!
Whale Rider - !
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels - Overcame the long title curse!
Detour - All-time best low budget film noir!
37.2 Le Matin (Betty Blue) - Depressingly perfect!
Bound - Bound to be on list!
My Life As A Dog - Before Hollywood sucked the life out of Hallstrom!
Winged Migration - Wowser!
Plus, I'll heartily second:
Cane Toads, Down By Law, Thin Blue Line.

Holy S*** Bradley...YOU RULE! Thanks for the Matches On Cane Toads, Down by Law, and Thin Blue Line. Where have you been all this time. We have to discuss those movies in detail. If you want, I'll do Back-n-Forth round with you on one of them?
I will match you on Harold and Maude, Winged Migration, Leon, Rivers and Tides (If its the Goldsworthy Biography?) I'm putting Whale Rider over in Foreign, though I am matching you on it. Also, I have seen Bubble Boy. I'm not going to say its top 100, so I won't match you on it, but it is definately a very cute movie.
Rod, thanks for pointing out Dancer in the Dark. Its up now. Everyone, if I miss something, please feel free to draw my attention to it.

How could I forget to put up one of my favorite "horror" movie ever?! *slaps forehead*
I suggest:
Brain Dead (a.k.a. Dead Alive)

So you got to see it all the way through? Was it not one of the richest movies ever? When do you want to discuss a back-n-forth round on it?
