MAN OF THE HOUSE - 3/10 (D-)
Well, I've been trying to not be so hard on the films I watch. The beginning of MAN OF THE HOUSE was promising but when the actual plot came about, it got awful and stupid. One of the worst of the years.

The only "funny" part was when the kid peed all over the lady!
everything else was stupid and dumb!
ooh and Ice Cube Sucks!

Million Dollar Baby (A)
Great movie.Great performances by all involved.I see why it won so many awards.A movie with a serious tone but enough humor to keep it going and making it fun to watch.I don't normally enjoy sports themed movies but I really liked this one. Also, the unhappy ending is great, who wants a fairy tale ending all the time anyway.

The Prisoner of 2nd Avenue - B+
Previously i've only watched this film to watch the brilliant cameo of Sylvester Stallone, which is brilliant mind you. But i watched this the other day and gee, it was amazing, and im ashamed i havent watched it before, seeing as though ive owned it for years!!!!
Jack Lemmon is a legend. Cracks me up. Great script. Great cast!

On Her Majesty's Secret Service - C+
Good Bond flick. I can't grade Bond movies anything more than 'B', so think of a 'B' as the top grade and a 'C+' is pretty good!!!
You Only Live Twice - B
One of the best Bond movies. Always a favourite of mine. It's Connery man, he is a dude!!!!!

Meet Joe Black - B
Last time i watched this i was interested but not too much. Well, now i can appreciate this film for what it is. I think that its a brilliant film, Brad Pitt shows here that he has real acting ability, not to say that anybody ever thought anything different, but i think it needs stating with this film.
Hopkins shows a brilliant performance yet again, as usual. Claire Forlani was a gem, whilst being v. attractive.

Why have't i seen this before? You know, its one of those films that ive always wanted to see, with the 80's action theme running around on the front cover. But i've never got round to watching it......Its a brilliant fun action movie with a brilliant cast. Goldie Hawn in her hay-day, sexy as hell. Mel Gibson is cool and i like him as the post-Riggs Riggs character, lol.
This is being added to my "buy" list.

Good entertainment. I just have so many problems with it. The only good thing is Mary Jane.

Crash: A- or thereabouts
Crash is often worthy of the superlatives recently laden upon it: It's unflinching, uncompromising, and articulate; the acting is terrific, the writing is crisp, and the themes are universal. Its style alone - the gritty cinematography, fitting music, and overall composed tone - is enough to partially recommend it. Where the film faulters, though, is in its attempts at delving into its own thematic cycle. I recently read the popular book Blink by Malcom Gladwell, a study of interpersonal split second decision-making and, briefly, racial discrimination. What both the film and book do well is analyze that racism, however much we may deny it, exists in all of us. What Blink did well that this film doesn't, however, is treat racism as we see it most prevalently today: a subconscious, often unknowing, act. Haggis' screenplay treats its subject in a parable-like manner, with the most extreme of extremes lashing out at each other. But is this representative of societal behavior today? I think it works in making an attempt at such analyzation, but no, it's not. And, in turn, the film partially ends up ringing of contrivance rather than the subtlety of dogged analyzation. Like I said, though, the film does work, and despite its big-picture missteps, the power of the film, as well as its aformentioned positives, create a striking whole.

The Shop Around The Corner- A
Magical movie I can't believe I haven't seen before. Charming, funny, but with a hint of sadness lurking underneath. Great performances all around. The "Lubitsch touch" in full bloom. Furthermore, it'll make a great viewing come Christmastime.
Later remade (badly) into You've Got Mail. Yeeeeech!

Goldie Hawn has made lots of good movies in the 70's - you should check out her other movies but most were more comedy and not this kind of action.

The Machinist... B-
Overall? The confused younger brother of a Lynch film, overrated, thinks it's smarter than it really is. Needed to be more than just a series of ambiguities being thrown into the ring and then explained as little details of "what really happened" because its been done before and a great movie offers something new and refreshing. The hangman thing was far too obvious and pretty much reveals what he's done (without details) long before intended so basically I spent a fair while just waiting for Trevor to catch up with where I was at while he wasted his time investigating suspicions I simply wasn't buying anymore.
Having said that, I'm probably being overcritical because of my expectations. I enjoyed the way it played out in the vein and tempo of older 50s and 60s thrillers, I got a Vertigo feel from it, and there was plenty of mystery and intrigue to ponder along the way even if it wasn't all that satisfying in the end. Not a bad movie at all, just nowhere near the 7.7 its got on IMDB.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - C
While I did find it lightly entertaining, I was surprised by the quality of the film. It certainly isn't bad, but it isn't anything special unfortunately, and an excellent cast almost entirely wasted...
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - B+
I have no word as to say whether or not this is better than the 71 version (haven't seen it in quite some time), but I did enjoy it quite a bit. The look of the film is amazing and I did think Highmore and Depp were both great.
