 I agree completely. I guess I was underwhelmed with Saving Private Ryan.

As for Chicago and A Beautiful Mind... I enjoyed Chicago a lot, I loved A Beautiful Mind immensely. My personal pick for 2002 would be The Hours but I honestly don't think many people even like the movie so I don't mind Chicago's win. As for A Beautiful Mind, Moulin Rouge! is my favorite movie but I guess I don't mind anymore with me rewatching and loving both films.

Yes, you are right.

I think awarding Rocky the best picture over everything that year is one of the few goodf decisions that the academy made pre 1990's. Rocky is a perfect film, beautifully written and masterfully made. Much better than the gritty, well made, but vastly over rated Taxi Driver.

Hated them both, but agree with you, I do.

I would've actually given it to All the President's Men or Network over both Rocky and Taxi Driver.

In retrospect, I would have much rather The Hours won.
Chicago has no staying power.

Come on people! Let's add some technicals here!
The WTF award right now that I can think of is Gandhi's win for Best Costume Design. Yech.

Chicago.
It was pretty much a fancy and edited taping of the play, without the fun of being there live. I barely consider it a movie.

a recap of some of the comments
***********************************
Ok, how about A Beautiful Mind. It's not a bad movie but I thought The Fellowship Of The Ring, Moulin Rouge!, and Gosford Park were all better.
**********************************
Braveheart
ROTK
Titantic
The English Patient
Annie Hall
Ordinary People
Chariots of Fire
Terms of Endearment
Out of Africa
Shakespeare In Love
A Beautiful Mind
Million Dollar Baby
***********************************
Shakespeare in Love (a great movie) winning Best Picture over Saving Private Ryan (a masterpiece).
************************************
Braveheart winning over Fargo
************************************
Sean Penn winning for Mystic River. (ALL 4 of the other nominees were better)
Beautiful Mind winning over Moulin Rouge! and Fellowship.
**************************************
Others that didnt deserve to win:
The english patient
Gladiator
A beautiful mind
Chicago
Chariots of fire
Kramer Vs Kramer
The Sting
***************************************
Worst Oscar Win Ever: Chicago
**************************************
Annie Hall beating Star Wars.
**************************************
Empire Magazine releases a list of the worst 10 Oscar winners:
1. Braveheart (1995)
2. A Beautiful Mind (2001)
3. The Greatest Show on Earth (1952)
4. Ordinary People (1980)
5. Forrest Gump (1994)
6. Terms of Endearment (1983)
7. Around the World in 80 Days (1956)
8. Cavalcade (1933)
9. Rocky (1976)
10. How Green was My Valley (1941)
I couldn't agree more about the top 2, but I actually thought Ordinary People was a great movie.
Deservingly not deserving of a spot on the list : Out of Africa, Titanic, and Shakespeare in Love.
My personal pick: Gigi
****************************************
Gladiator. A royal POS
******************************************
Also, How Green Was My Valley won over Citizen Kane. Commies.
******************************************
Titanic over As Good as it Gets
Dances With Wolves over GoodFellas
The English Patient over Fargo
Rocky over Taxi Driver
Ordinary People over Raging Bull
Sean Penn over Bill Murray
Adrien Brody over Michael Caine AND Nicolas Cage
And, *sigh*...finally...
The Aviator over Million Dollar Baby
**********************************
Oliver!winning over 2001 also confuses me
********************************************
What are the WORST Oscar wins ever?
Shakespear In Love winning best picture over Saving Private Ryan
&
Denzel Washington as Malcolm X losing to Al Pacino for Scent of a Woman
*********************************************
Titanic over L.A. Confidential
Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan
A Beautiful Mind over The Fellowship of the Ring
*******************************************
Out of Africa winning 7 Oscars is a bit too much...
*********************************************
would've actually given it to All the President's Men or Network over both Rocky and Taxi Driver.
********************************************
Gwyneth Paltrow dammit!!!
**********************************************
ROTK as Best Picture

Chicago.

It was the make up oscar for the idiocy of Beautiful mind over FOTR.

Braveheart still makes me cringe. It did at the time, and now the movie looks like utter shite.
