Post The Descent - from the man who brought you Dog Soldiers
Haven't seen a thread on this yet.

It's a film about a group of female spelunkers who make their way down into some caves, and gory deaths probably follow. Apparently it's "the most significant Brit chiller since 28 Days Later".

You can see the trailer here.

And here's a review from Empire Magazine.

Empire Magazine wrote:
Neil Marshall sure knows how to get your attention. Mere minutes into The Descent, he’ll have made you jump half out your seat, sent your popcorn cascading ceilingward and left nervous titters bubbling around the theatre. Here’s a man who truly, deeply, horribly knows his horror. Welding a fanboy mentality to a masterful grasp of genre-filmmaking, Marshall goes all-out to disturb, upset and downright terrify his audience for a relentless 100-odd minutes, pausing only occasionally to allow us the odd twitchy laugh or indulge in bit of visual-reference in-jokery (Aliens and Carrie are just two of the more obvious homaged movies).

The Geordie shockmeister first got our attention back in 2002 with his gruey, boisterous squaddies-versus-werewolves debut Dog Soldiers. Scrappy and shoestringy it may have been, but it marked Marshall out as a British talent to keep our beadies on. The Descent represents a logical progression. It’s bigger-budget (or, at least, it looks it), better-looking, far scarier and will, no doubt fling small-fish Marshall into a much bigger pond – one ringed with tinsel.

Much of The Descent’s success is due to the beautiful economy of the concept: six girls, one cave and a whole lotta pain. The subterranean setting is conducive to horror and Marshall grinds every last wince out of it. Even before the screams begin and the bones start snapping, the claustrophobia will get you, with the women elbowing and puffing their way through cheese-press tunnels, their hardhats scraping disconcertingly against stone, the rockdust snaking through the dank, stale air in the torchlight… And once we’re all down in the dark, we’re down there for the rest of the movie. There’s no respite, no moment to sit back and breathe easy.

Thankfully, Marshall’s inventive enough to make this work for, rather than against him. Some scenes are lit by the eerie crimson glow of a flare, others washed in the green of a glowstick, while in a few we can only see through the fuzzy, black-and-white nightsight of a camcorder. And when there’s no light at all, he lets his creepy sound-design do all the dirty work.

Naturally there’s far more to this than the vacation-gone-wrong set-up. For a start, there’s the strained character dynamics, played out effectively by the cast as Sarah’s (Macdonald) mental state becomes worryingly fragile, while Juno’s (Mendoza) ballsiness soon teeters into recklessness. Then, even worse there’s… Well, it’s probably best we don’t go there. The less you know, the more you’ll enjoy. If, of course, being scared shitless is what you consider enjoyable.

Verdict

Brutal, bloody, terrifying, astonishing... And so tense it'll leave you aching. The most significant Brit chiller since 28 Days Later.

5 stars (out of 5)

Looks damn good! I'll try to catch it this weekend.

Looks good for the horror people. Good premise, simple (how the horror people like, otherwise they wouldnt understand it).

Would see it but i will save my money for Rocky VI.

Are we even seeing the same marketing?
The Descent features unfeasibly awful marketing. And its title sounds like an early 90s scifi game of some sort.

The Descent is a brit horror flick that is storming the UK just now. Luckily for American horror fans, Lions Gate has picked up this critically acclaimed horror fair.

From the director of DOG SOLDIERS.

Plot Outline:
A group of female friends led by Juno (Natalie Mendoza) encounter bloodthirsty creatures when they get trapped in a mountain cave due to rockfall. Worst of all they their friendships sour and they discover their real fear is from each other...

Uk critics are calling it:

"A Brilliantly Constructed Panic Attack...Fantastic....Super Scary" 5 Stars- Starburst
"Brutal, Bloody, Terrifying, Astonishing....So Tense it will Leave You Aching" 5 Stars- Empire Magazine
"Outright Terror...Bold and Brilliant" 4 Stars- Total Film

Check out the official website here:

It recently took number 3 at the UK box office, behind only WAR OF THE WORLDS and BATMAN BEGINS. Grossing over $1,000,000 from under 300 screens.

Tagline: "Afraid of the dark? You Will Be"

I actually laughed when this was advertised on tv- lol. It seemed a little too cliched for my liking
but never really been a big horror fan.

probably good if you like that sort of thing.

I've heard dog soldiers was good but I've not seen that- maybe I should check it out.

However the person who recommended it also raves about blade:trinity- so naturally I was a little wary

Just got back from seeing this in the cinema, and it's pretty fucking great. Exhilerating, tense, relentless and pretty fucking brutal. I'm not prone to claustrophobia, but there were a few scenes in this where I teetered on having a full blown panic attack.

I'll try to get a review written up for the main site, but for now my grade's an enthusiastic A.

I can't wait to see this. My only question - did the monsters look really fake? I was worried they would, but if it was intense enough I could get around it.

Not at all. They looked exactly how you'd imagine subterranean cave dwellers to look... I guess.

The trailer was really good. At first I thought it was a new trailer for THE CAVE though ;) (one that was actually trying to make it look more serious and scary). I thought DOG SOLDIERS was good (7/10 or B-) but not as great as the GINGER SNAPS films.

I'm definitely interested in this one.

Post Neil Marshall's THE DESCENT
Without a shadow of a doubt, this is probably the scariest movie you will see this year.

(If there's anything scarier than this, I'm going to have to pass on it.)

The Cave will have to knock one out of the park to "hold a candle" to THIS gem.

The story is totally original and daring, the all-female cast is perfect, the score is powerful and all the technical aspects will impress even the most jaded critics.

You will experience unimaginable FEAR.

If you are claustrophobic, don't even THINK about watching it.

Neil Marshall could very well be the new King of Horror. It'll be interesting to see him try to top this one.

 Crikey werthy, you've even got me a wee bit afraid with that ominous post. I'll do my research and if it gets over to these parts, I'll give it a watch. Haven't watched a horror flick in a good long while.

No wonder I missed it.... and I'm sorry I did. Interesting comments.

I was a' prayin' ta Jesus, Mary AND Joseph, M... but they were nowhere to be found.

I actually had trouble breathing.

There's a scene where you will see that breathing normally is absolutely imperative.

What did you think of Dog Soldiers, BTW?

Bugger werthy. I feel my heart palpitating already and I bloody don't really now why! I'd like to think that I don''t scare that easily..lol.

As for Dog soldiers, I'd give that a B-. I liked it, but they could have polished it up a bit scriptwise, etc., and the werewolves looked a bit too contrived at times.

Aye, that they did, lad. But I just like the whole premise and "execution"... and the gore, of course.

Which seemed to be strangely lacking in Land of the Dead. Most peculiar.

The gore in THE DESCENT leaves all comers in the dust... or charnel pit, if you prefer. :nutso:

You've just hyped my anticipation to supreme levels for a flick that I haven't even heard of until five minutes ago. This is now atop my very short list of films to see. It should get here eventually as we get most Brit films coming our way. Cheers.

Just for the record...

I should make it as clear as an azure sky of deepest summer that this is an existential film.

So beware.

Not many talented film-writing blokes have the guts to write a script like this anymore. In fact, you should check out the TNT doc Watch the Skies at the earliest possible convenience (maybe you can catch it on a good sat provider) and listen to what the four experts have to say about existential film-making. Ironically, none of four actually MAKE films like that, but they certainly admire the few who do. (Incredible Shrinking Man is the one they praise the most... and that was actually supposed to be a typical drive-in Saturday flick.)

This film is precisely what the industry needs to give it a necessary shot in the arm. It's like being shot with a diamond bullet straight through the forehead. It's like watching a snail crawling across the edge of a straight razor... and surviving.

I wanted to tear my teeth out. In fact, I didn't know WHAT I wanted to do.

Image

Event movies can be great... only there's usually waaaaaaaaay too much anticipation, and there's bound to be a letdown. Guerilla film-making is all making a lot with a little. It's about taking the audience by surprise and holding it by the scruff of the neck and shaking the LIFE out of it.

I must admit, while I was expecting it to be good, it surprised me with just how good it turned out to be. It's a supremely entertaining horror flick, one of the best of recent years, that's relentlessly brutal and tense. There's not a death in it that didn't make me cringe. A truly horrible, devastating, yet brilliant film.

Absolutely. In fact, I daresay even Chuck Connors himself would've been somewhat terrified by the horrific proceedings.
