Requiem for a Dream

Quote:
Requiem for a Dream is a 2000 American drama film directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Marlon Wayans and Jennifer Connelly. The film is based on the novel of the same name written by Hubert Selby, Jr., and Aronofsky and Selby co-wrote the screenplay. Burstyn was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance. The film was screened out of competition at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival.

The film depicts different forms of addiction, leading to the characters’ imprisonment in a world of delusion and reckless desperation that is subsequently overtaken and devastated by reality.

Although disturbing, this is a film that everyone should see, it is full of great acting, editing and truly memorable story. One of the best films of 00'

Well, it wasn't THAT disturbing, but there was just something about watching that movie in a dark basement at 3am...

Right, so I'd seen the Edited Version a year ago when I popped this in. Much different experience - revisiting the Uncut version.

Devastating is the perfect way to describe it. It might have dragged a bit with Burnstyn's character, but she STILL deserved the Oscars. Hands down the best movie of 2000.

Besides the performances, the score and ending elevated the film to become one of the best ever.

I just finished watching it for the first time and i feel so damn horrible. Its easily one of the most powerful and depressing films I have seen, seriously. This movie is just pure brilliance.

A+

Burstyn.
OMFG. I absolutely cannot believe that Julia FUCKING Roberts got the Oscar over her (and Linney). One of the best performances I've ever seen, even if the character's plot becomes ludicrous at points.
And Jennifer Connelly gives a great performance as well, although the two-sided dildo lost her the Oscar nom. Heck, even Jared Leto and Marlon Wayans are excellent in this.

Although disturbing and pseudo-artsy, I think this film works better as a mainstream, uber-intense thriller than it does as an arthouse film. I mean, it's all ridiculous, but man oh man are the last 30 minutes some of the most gripping ones in the last decade of cinema.

I think I'll give this a B+

How have I not posted my thoughts here yet?!

Requiem For A Dream is one of my favorite movies ever. It's disturbing, haunting, tragic and ultimately one of the most powerful films ever released. The final montage is, in all honesty, one of the most devestating movie moments in history. The performances are unanimously excellent (especially Burstyn) and the direction is exceptional. Everything about this movie is just brilliant. A+

Utterly speechless.

I refuse to grade it, mostly because it's an experience beyond tangible mechanisms like descriptions and grading. It's an experience.

Or, as I've been saying it, the best movie that I'll never see again.

And it gave us the wonderful song used brilliantly in the Two Towers trailer (albeit remixed).

This is def an A+ movie in my book as well..

Everyone talks about the great performances, score, editing, and I agree with all that. But what I see anyone fail to mention is how it's Aronofsky's incredibly steady hand that pulls everything together into one of the most powerful, disturbing, and well constructed films I've seen. Easily one of the best films of the decade, not quite as great as NCFOM or brilliant as Fight Club, but truly magnificient.

A Perfect Score.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

I agree with the above two quoted posters.

Aronofsky was once again unable to reign in his screenplay to fulfil his ambitious directorial powers. Both Requiem For A Dream and The Fountain were disappointingly promising failures. Luckily, Aronofsky has also succeeded twice in making a whole great film with his earlier Pi and his recent The Wrestler.

I'm still looking forward to next year's Black Swan - - I just hope we get the good Aronofsky, not the obtuse one...
