Post Why Did Over Seas & Indies Get Demoted To Sub-forum?
To paraphrase what Rodney Dangerfield always used to say: "We don't get no respect!"

It is the only main forum that got thus demoted to a sub-forum - clearly reflecting the treatment of Over Seas and Indie films in our broader society.

Sure it's been a little quiet in here for the past month or so - but that's typical of the summer season, when all the blockbusters hog the screen - sensible Indie viewers take the time to dryclean their berets in the summer, and wait for another winter season of seeing their fave new flicks in crappy theatres and then discussing them over capuccino...

I say - Bring back the status of Over Seas and Indies to that of a full forum!

I guess it will get a bit more exposure to people who do not go into it, normally.

Meh. Wouldn't have called it if people had been using it. Was only stating the overly-obvious. I don't think the sub-forum will help, but that's just me. This was the least of the three suggestions. I still predict about 2 posts in here per week. But I'd love to be proven wrong.

Go see My Summer of Love.

It was actually discussed in "The Site" section.

It is easily un-dooable, unlike merging it completly with Cinemania, which is hard to impossible to undo.

We will see how this goes, if Overseas and Indies grows more, then we can always bring it back.

I think the key is to move "indie" threads from Cinemania as they pop up.

AZnd we will be trying to do that as well.

I have defined Indie in the mod forum as any film from a indie branch of a studio, i.e. fox searchlight or mirimax, or anything similar.

If you see a movie that should be moved, please notify a mod or admin browsing the board.

I agree with Loyal, move the indie threads to here. And maybe put a link to this section at the bottom of reviews of foreign and independent films.

Also a title to the section that was more explicit as to the contents might help. Like Arthouse or Foreign and Independent Films. (I was going to suggest "Sexual Deviancy Around the World" but lets keep it serious for now....). Something for the regulars to consider anyway, I'm just a tourist here.

Because this forum, as like other overseas countries, is much less important than it's American roots...

Sorry, I don't ever read "The Site" forum - it's just that I almost had a heart attack when I all of a sudden couldn't find this forum today. To me, it's one of the unique aspects of WOKJ that makes it a great community. Sure it's not heavily trafficed, but I never considered that a deficit myself - especially as I mentioned above, in the summer months. What I particularly miss is the notification on the Forunm Index page of who posted how recently - otherwise I can live with the shame of sub-forum status.

But, these are only my (in temporary shock) feedback comments, I remain happy to be a guest in this terrific forum!

Actually, if a thread in the 'foreign' section is the latest to be replied to, it shows up as the latest replied thread on the forum index under cinemania.

I would agree that it is one of the most unique forums, thats why we want to do whatever we can to get it the attention it needs and deserves.

Like I said, this is more of a test than anything, and it can always be moved back.

I have a new idea for you guys to kick around and see what you think: what about combining this section with the "And the award goes to" section?

1) they are both low-traffic sections 2) they appeal to similar types 3) many of these indie and foreign movies will be discussed for oscars and other awards.

It's something to consider.

I thought I listed how they were relevant to each other...no big deal though, just throwing the idea out for discussion.

Awards are for the most superficial people, while Foreign and Indies are for the most deep people - just because those two personas happen to intersect in a guy like me, doesn't mean it would add any value to WOKJ...

Well

To be honest, I am not worried about weather this section gets 1 post a week or 50.

I do like having an overseas and indies forum, I think it adds that little something extra. It is in the right category (cinemania) and if it ever grows large enough to the point where it should no longer be a sub forum, then we can easily move it.

Just help us (the moderating team) out, and if you notice a thread in cinemania that should be in here ... ask a mod to move it.

I would say there are people here with interest in indies that are about as deep as a puddle.

Some puddles depths are deceptive.

It's a bad time to judge this forum.

Since indie season won't kick in til the fall.

That's great, then forget my suggestion about merging it with the awards. I was simply trying to find a way to keep the section alive for those who enjoy it.

Don't worry, I am not planning on merging it with Cinemania anytime soon.

I think that in time, as our userbase grows, so to will this section. To be honest, this is one of the sections that guests view the most, and one of the sections that seperates us from most similar forums. It would be ... an odd choice ... to remove it.

It doesn't have to be mind blowingly popular ... I mean ... we love our indie films but they don't get 1/10th the views of mainstream movies. It is almost fitting that the same is said for this section.

Seeing as this thread is getting the most hits, its not too suprising it's been demoted.

well not that many people are into indies and over seas.

What's with flooding the Foreign and Independent Film sub-forum with all these new threads?

The culture of this forum is a delicate flow and a flood like that washes any current life out of the front page. It is not even practical given the varying distribution and release schedules of these kinds of movies. By the time you've seen one of them, it will have percolated way down in the pile, making it difficult to find with the phpBB software's rather limited search capacity.

Just this past month we've had duplicated threads on the (excellent) movie My Summer of Love - there doesn't seem to be a coordinated effort in moderating this sub-forum - my humble suggestion is: why not let dolcevita, who seems to know the subject matter and it's subtleties handle those duties in here (not that I even know if she's interested in doing so) - I just know from her writing that she'd be good at it, and she perhaps could nurture this sub-forum back from it's sickbed and perhaps eventually back to full forum status.

(Note: I'm just an ordinary forum member and these are only one user's opinions - please remember that I love WOKJ and am commenting solely for the purpose of it's future growth and greatness. Thank-you...)
