Batman (1989)
BatmanQuote: Batman is a 1989 superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name, directed by Tim Burton. The film stars Michael Keaton in the title role, as well as Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger, Robert Wuhl and Jack Palance. The film, in which Batman deals with the rise of a costumed criminal known as "The Joker", is the first installment of Warner Bros.' Batman film series.
After Burton was hired as director, Steve Englehart and Julie Hickson wrote film treatments before Sam Hamm wrote the first screenplay. Batman was not greenlit until after the success of Burton's Beetlejuice (1988). Numerous A-list actors were considered for the role of Batman. Nicholson accepted the role of the Joker under strict conditions that dictated a high salary, a portion of the box office profits, and his shooting schedule.
Filming took place at Pinewood Studios from October 1988 to January 1989. The budget escalated from $30 million to $48 million, while the 1988 Writers Guild of America strike forced Hamm to drop out. Uncredited rewrites were performed by Warren Skaaren, Charles McKeown and Jonathan Gems. Batman was a critical and financial success, earning over $400 million in box office totals. The film received several Saturn Award nominations and a Golden Globe nomination, and won an Academy Award. It also inspired the Emmy Award-winning Batman: The Animated Series, paving the way for the DC Animated Universe, and has influenced Hollywood's modern marketing and development techniques of the superhero film genre.

In the reigns of the Spider-Man and X-Men movies, despite having no CGI period!

My sentiments of 1989 Batman.
If i had its dvd in front of me, I would place it on my bed, turn around, lower my boxers, bend and fart in its general direction.
I hope that sums it up.

Never read Batman comics so I won't compare it to them. I don't even want to as I'll judge the movie on its own merits and man, that is a great flick. Michael Keaton is a good Bruce Wayne, but it's Jack Nicholson who steals the show all the way and Tim Burton's masterful direction that makes this movie very special.

Ok this is hard to rate.
If you want see the dark, sad but hard, real "Dark Knight" from the comics this movie fails (To much fun stuff to much influences from the Adam west show I guess.). So its not a correct comic adaption neither a fun movie.
But it works as a Burton Batman and this sholud not be called Batman instead Burtons Batman (What in a way actually is the case.)
So as entertaining movie I would give 8/10 (Director, sets visuals etc....) Yeah its fun.
But as correct adaptation of the Bat [-X
For that Burtons Batman should have been much more thriller like.
Thats not the real stuff.
(Thats also the reason why all Batfans are waitung for Nolans Batman because in 4 Batmovies they never really get what they wanted.)

I'm currently watching all the Batman movies (yes, including Batman and Robin) in my current hype for Batman...
And, yes, this film was fantastic. Tim Burton is...a genius!
Michael Keaton was never my favorite Batman, but he did a great job, too.
Overall, probably around #3 or #4 out of all 5 Batman movies. A

I found it to be average. Jack Nicholson was incredible as The Joker, and Michael Keaton was also good. I found Kim Basinger to be extremely annoying. It's nothing incredible, but it is entertaining. I thought its action sequences were lacking, but the climax more than made up for it. Batman Returns is far more superior in my opinion though.

Fabulous considering the weird director. Nicholson was fantastic. Keaton and Basinger are good. Great Score too.

I used to loathe this movie, now I just dislike it. Most of the movie contradicts itself in some sort of way. Batman did NOT create the Joker; Jack Napier SHOT Batman, and Batman blocked it. Thus it hit Jack in the cheeks were Jack would fall and Batman tried to SAVE Jack! Batman and Jack would have known this! Why does Joker say he says "Have you ever danced with the Devil by the pale moonlight?" to all his victims when he clearly did not say it to Eckhardt, Thomas Wayne, Grissom, the 2 mob boses, etc? Dumb! Also, since when did the Joker kill Bruce's parents?
The worst problems with this movie though are the 2 biggest miscasts in movie history: Keaton as Batman and Jack as the Joker. The Joker is far more insane (at least what I have read) and he does not look ANYTHING like Jack... and well Keaton was just stiff and had the excitement of plywood. He's a weasle.

Behind Batman Begins, this is my favorite Batflick. It's dark, a little scary, and wonderfully creative.

Now this is what BATMAN is all about and much better than what Nolan attempted to do, but in all fairness, I give Nolan props for turning it around compared to Schumacher's movie's.. Is that specific enough before the Batfans turn my words around again and insinuate I'm trashing Nolan's vision?? I give Burton's BATMAN an "A"..
